We consider the problem of polling web pages as a strategy for monitoring the world wide web. The problem consists of repeatedly polling a selection of web pages so that changes that occur over time are detected. In particular, we consider the case where we are constrained to poll a maximum number of web pages per unit of time, and this constraint is typically dictated by the governing communication bandwidth, and by the speed limitations associated with the processing. Design and performance evaluation of an hybrid reservation-polling MAC protocol for power-line communications

This paper presents an hybrid reservation-polling MAC protocol able to effectively deal with the channel disturbances typical of Power-line communication systems. Channel access is controlled by a scheduler running on a centralized station. Fast retransmission of corrupted packets is employed to achieve high performance on Power-line channels characterized by frequent error bursts due to impulsive noise. The performance of our proposed mechanism are evaluated by means of simulation, for the more challenging case of time-sensitive traffic sources (voice calls). Abstract The described interface to a digital computer measures interspike interval durations with a resolution of 10 μs. A built-in first-in first-out (FIFO) memory relieves the host computer from frequent I/O intensive tasks. The internal FIFO buffer can store up to 512 data words (wordlength is 16 bit) and works on the dual-port principle. This way the acquisition of a neuronal spike train is completely independent of the computer's simultaneously ongoing data access. A simple handshake protocol between the interface and the computer prevents any overhead communication. Countless examples of misleading forecasts on behalf of both campaign and exit polls affecting, among others, British, French, and Spanish elections could be found. This has seriously damaged their image. Therefore, procedures should be used that minimize errors, especially on election night when errors are more noticeable, in order to maintain people's trust in surveys.
