Some new examples of polymer modification
1985
This lecture summarizes some of our recent results about reactions with synthetic polymers. By cationic ring-opening polymerization of 4H, 7H-1,3-dioxepin a linear polyacetal containing one C-C-double bond per repeating unit is obtained. Copolymerization of this monomer with trioxane or dioxolane is possible. Various addition reactions can be carried out with these unsaturated polyacetals, polymeric epoxides being of special interest. Some other unsaturated cycloacetals are briefly mentioned. Amide moieties in linear polyamides can be modified by different reactions. Preparation and properties of poly-N-chloroamides and poly-N-trifluoroacetyl-amides are described. By reaction of metalated p…

Enamines derived from cyclic ketones behave as difunctional intermediates when treated with phenyl isocyanate to produce dicarboxanilides. Reaction of bis(4-isocyanatophenyl)-methane with 1-N-morpholino-1-cyclopentene in DMSO leads to poly[iminocarbonyl(2-morpholino-1-cyclopenten-1.3-ylene)carbonylimino-p-phenylenemethylene-p-phenylene], a polyamide. The effects of various cyclic enamines and diisocyanates on the polymerization are surveyed. Morpholine and piperidine are more effective than pyrrolidine or dimethylamine when incorporated into cyclopentanone enamines. The molecular weight of the polymer decreases when the ring size of the ketone component is increased. The efficiency of the d…
Optimising Lactic Acid Cheese Packaging Systems
2016
On the basis of a previous research, it seems that foil-wrapped tray solutions are not particularly chosen by lactic acid cheese consumers. With relation to this study, almost half of the respondent population would have expressed the desire of different packages. Parchment packages and poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate)/polyvinylidene chloride/poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) laminates would be removed by 25.0 and 12.5% of customers, respectively. Polyamide/polyethylene double and single packaging would be removed from the market only by 5.0% of respondents. Data have shown that cheese and packaging quality are dependent on lactic acid cheese surface microflora. The type of this microflora is …
On the role of extensional flow in morphology and property modifications of MWCNT/polyamide-based fibres
2011
Unfilled and MWCNT-filled PA fibers are prepared and the effect of the extensional flow on their mechanical performance and morphological variations is investigated. Morphological analyses using SEM, TEM, and SAXS suggest a stronger orientation of the MWCNTs along the fiber direction with increasing extensional flow. A particular MWCNT bundle formation in the PA drawn nanocomposite fibers is observed for the first time, and a pull-out of the central nanotube in some bundles is noted. The maintenance of the “shish-kebab” structure upon extensional flow is responsible for the mechanical improvements and dimensional stability in MWCNT-filled PA fibers.

On the Preparation and the Characterization of Polyethylene/Polyamide Blends by Melt Processing in the Presence of an Ethylene(co)acrylic Acid Copoly…
2006
Samples of HDPE and PA6 have been meltprocessed in the presence of two new phosphazene compounds, CP-2EPOX and CP-2OXA together with an ethylene/ acrylic acid copolymer. The blends have been prepared in an industrial twin-screw extruder by using PA6 and PE in weight ratios of 25/75 and 75/25. When used, 5 phr of EAA and 0.2 phr of CP have been added. The materials have been completely characterized from a rheological, morphological, and mechanical point of view. The results indicate that the additives used caused an increase in the rupture tensile properties, of the impact strength and viscosity especially in the PE-rich blend in the presence of CP-2EPOX. This result can be attributed both …
