Crystallization of Vaterite Nanowires by the Cooperative Interaction of Tailor-Made Nucleation Surfaces and Polyelectrolytes
2005
The concepts of template-induced crystallization on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and the use of polymer additives are combined into a new strategy, where, through the cooperative interaction of a SAM matrix involved in the nucleation process, poly(acrylic acid), a dissolved polyelectrolyte, and the dissolved ions, hierarchically ordered mineral structures are formed. The adsorption of poly(acrylic acid) to the SAM is monitored using a quartz microbalance. Transmission electron microscopy measurements on samples that are taken from polyacrylate solution in short intervals after the start of the reaction reveals that nanometer-sized particles pre-formed in solution are being attached to t…
"Smart" defects in colloidal photonic crystals
2005
AbstractWe present a bottom-up approach for the construction of "Smart" active defects in colloidal photonic crystals (CPCs). These structures incorporate polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) planar defects embedded in silica CPCs through a combination of evaporation induced self-assembly and microcontact transfer printing. We show how the enormous chemical diversity inherent to PEMs can be harnessed to create chemically active defect structures responsive to solvent vapor pressures, light, temperature as well as redox cycling. A sharp transmission state within the photonic stopband, induced by the PEM defect, can be precisely, reproducibly and in some cases reversibly tuned by these external s…
Polyelectrolyte Brushes Grafted at the Air/Water Interface
1997
A new approach for the study of grafted polyelectrolytes is investigated: monolayers at the air/water interface of block copolymers consisting of a liquid hydrophobic and a polyelectrolyte block. ...

Polyelectrolytes on block copolymer surfaces
2004
Soft lithography and properties of amphiphilic block copolymers are combined in a new technique for the generation of patterned substrates, which can be used in different ways as templates for further processing. In these processing steps the deposition of polyelectrolytes, metals and grafting from polymerizations are used for the construction of different structures.
Poly(styrene sulfonate) self-organization: electrostatic and secondary interactions
2004
We investigate the self-organization of PSS in brushes and polyelectrolyte multilayers with X-ray, neutron and optical reflectivity. The electrostatic force dominates brush phases and adsorption behavior, additionally we find evidence of a strong hydrophobic force: (i) within amphiphilic diblock copolymer monolayers, a PSS monolayer adsorbs flatly to the hydrophobic block, (ii) on temperature increase (and with screened electrostatic forces), more PSS is adsorbed onto oppositely charged surfaces, and (iii) a polyelectrolyte multilayers shrinks when heated at 100% r.h. The latter two effects are consistent with the well-known increase of the hydrophobic force on heating: The increased PSS su…
Energy Consumption for the Desalination of Salt Water Using Polyelectrolyte Hydrogels as the Separation Agent
2017
The energy consumption for a novel desalination approach using charged hydrogels under externally applied pressure is experimentally measured and calculated. The salt separation is based on a partial rejection of mobile salt ions caused by the fixed charges inside the polyelectrolyte network. Self-synthesized and commercial poly(acrylic acid) hydrogels are used to study the desalination performance in reference to sodium chloride solutions within the concentration range of 0.1–35 g L−1. The influence of various synthetic parameters, such as the degree of crosslinking (DC) and the size and shape of the particles, is investigated. Furthermore, the effect of process parameters including the am…
One-pot synthesis and characterization of aliphatic poly(oxytetramethylene) ionene
2002
Abstract One-pot synthesis of poly(oxytetramethylene) ionene (POI) composed of one dimethylammonium group in each repeating unit is described. POI was prepared by using the cationic polymerization of tetrahydrofuran, followed by the chain extension reaction of living poly(oxytetramethylene) (POTM) chain with N , N -dimethylaminotrimethylsilane. The weight average molecular weight of the ionene with bromide counter-anion (POI–Br) was 48,000 g/mol and the molecular weight of POTM between the ionic sites was ca. 2100. POI–Br showed polyelectrolyte behavior in polar solvent. The elastomeric film of POI–Br was prepared: its tensile strength at break and elongation at break were ca. 11 MPa and ca…
PAA-PAMPS Copolymers as an Efficient Tool to Control CaCO3 Scale Formation
2013
Scale formation, the deposition of certain minerals such as CaCO3, MgCO3, and CaSO4 center dot 2H(2)O in industrial facilities and household devices, leads to reduced efficiency or severe damage. Therefore, incrustation is a major problem in everyday life. In recent years, double hydrophilic block copolymers (DHBCs) have been the focus of interest in academia with regard to their antiscaling potential. In this work, we synthesized well-defined blocklike PAA-PAMPS copolymers consisting of acrylic acid (AA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-propane sulfonate (AMPS) units in a one-step reaction by RAFT polymerization. The derived copolymers had dispersities of 1.3 and below. The copolymers have then b…
Electrochemical Characterization of Polyelectrolyte/Gold Nanoparticle Multilayers Self-Assembled on Gold Electrodes
2006
Polyelectrolyte/gold nanoparticle multilayers composed of poly(l-lysine) (pLys) and mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) stabilized gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) were built up using the electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembly technique upon a gold electrode modified with a first layer of MSA. The assemblies were characterized using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, cyclic and square-wave voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Charge transport through the multilayer was studied experimentally as well as theoretically by using two different redox pairs [Fe(CN)(6)](3-/4-) and [Ru(NH(3))(6)](3+/2+). This paper reports a large sensitivity to the charge of the out…
