Green composites of organic materials and recycled post-consumer polyethylene

2004

International audience; Addition of organic fillers to post‐consumer recycled plastics can give rise to several advantages. First of all, the cost of these fillers is usually very low, the organic fillers are biodegradable contributing to an improved environmental impact and, last but not least, some mechanical and thermomechanical properties can be enhanced. Organic fillers are not widely used in the plastic industry although their use is increasing. Bad dispersion into the polymer matrix at high‐level content and poor adhesion with the matrix are the more important obstacles to this approach. In this work various organic fillers have been used with a post‐consumer plastic material origina…

Vascularization and gene regulation of human endothelial cells growing on porous polyethersulfone (PES) hollow fiber membranes.

2004

Abstract Open-cell hollow fibers made of polyethersulfone (PES) manufactured in the absence of solvents with pore diameters smaller than 100 μm were examined for vascularization by human endothelial cells. The goal of this study was to determine whether the 3-D porous character of the PES surface affected human endothelial cell morphology and functions. Freshly isolated human endothelial cells from the skin (HDMEC), from the lung (HPMEC) and from umbilical cords (HUVEC) and two human endothelial cell lines, HPMEC-ST1.6R and ISO-HAS.c1 were added to PES fibers and cell adherence and growth was followed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Prior coating of PES with gelatin or fibronectin wa…

Synthesis and characterisation of ordered arrays of mesoporous carbon nanofibres

2009

A facile and reproducible one-step pathway has been developed for preparing ordered arrays of mesoporous carbon nanostructures within the pores of anodized aluminium oxide (AAO) membranes, through the confined self-assembly of phenol/formaldehyde resol and amphiphilic copolymer templates. The morphology of the mesoporous carbon nanostructures can be controlled by varying the copolymer surfactant, the quantity of the resol–surfactant precursor sol used and the amount of phenol–formaldehyde resol introduced into the resol–surfactant sol. One-dimensional (1-D) carbon nanostructures, such as carbon fibres with a core–shell structure and carbon ribbons with circular mesopores running parallel to…

Nanoparticles Built of Cross-Linked Heterotelechelic, Amphiphilic Poly(dimethylsiloxane)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) Diblock Copolymers

2000

Novel short chain α,ω-heterotelechelic amphiphilic poly(dimethylsiloxane)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymers (PDMS−PEO) with total molecular weights below 10 000 g/mol are synthesized, characterized, and used as basic constituent parts for functionalized nanoparticles. The self-assembly of the amphiphilic diblock copolymer in water as a solvent selective for the PEO block leads to the formation of spherical and cylindrical micellar structures with diameters between 10 and 25 nm. The core of the micelles is built of the hydrophobic PDMS chains, whereas the corona is set up by the hydrophilic PEO blocks. By using α,ω-heterotelechelic diblock copolymers, it is possible to fix the core o…

UV-tunable upper critical solution temperature behavior of azobenzene containing poly(methyl methacrylate) in aqueous ethanol

2015

A series of azobenzene containing copolymers were synthesized by post-modification of poly(methyl methacrylate-co-pentafluorophenyl methacrylate) with an amine-functionalized azobenzene. Light- and thermo-responsive behavior of these copolymers was investigated in ethanol–water solvent mixtures with various amounts of ethanol. The upper critical solution temperature (UCST) of the polymer solutions, resulting from the poly(methyl methacrylate), was found to be highly tunable by the substitution degree of the copolymers as well as the ethanol content of the solvent mixture. In addition, the copolymers are light responsive based on the cis–trans isomerization of the azobenzene group under UV i…

Rheological characterization and release properties of inulin-based hydrogels

2012

Abstract In the present study the rheological properties of hydrogels obtained through UV irradiation of an aqueous solution of methacrylated inulin (INUMA) alone or in the presence of four different crosslinkers, have been recorded as a function of irradiation time, at two different wavelengths (320 and 365 nm) and fixed frequency and amplitude by oscillatory experiments. Each hydrogel has been analyzed by measurements of the frequency-dependency of the elastic modulus, G ′, in the linear viscoelastic region. The amount of polymeric chains giving an elastic response has been correlated to the chemical nature of the crosslinker used together with INUMA. Finally the release properties of the…

Morphology, physical properties, silver release, and antimicrobial capacity of ionic silver-loaded poly(l-lactide) films of interest in food-coating …

2014

In the present study, silver ions were incorporated into a poly-(l-lactide) (PLA) matrix by a solvent casting technique using different solvents and glycerol as plasticizer. The effect of the different formulations on the morphology, thermal, mechanical and color properties were first evaluated. Additionally, a thorough study of the silver ions release to an aqueous environment was also monitored over time by anodic stripping voltammetry and correlated with the antimicrobial performance against S. enterica. The incorporation of silver contents of up to 1 wt % did not affect morphology, thermal or mechanical properties of the films. A sustainable, antibacterial effectiveness was found for th…

Diacetylene polymerization on a bulk insulator surface

2017

| openaire: EC/FP7/610446/EU//PAMS Molecular electronics has great potential to surpass known limitations in conventional silicon-based technologies. The development of molecular electronics devices requires reliable strategies for connecting functional molecules by wire-like structures. To this end, diacetylene polymerization has been discussed as a very promising approach for contacting single molecules with a conductive polymer chain. A major challenge for future device fabrication is transferring this method to bulk insulator surfaces, which are mandatory to decouple the electronic structure of the functional molecules from the support surface. Here, we provide experimental evidence for…

A Very Low Band Gap Diketopyrrolopyrrole-Porphyrin Conjugated Polymer

2017

International audience; A porphyrin-diketopyrrolopyrrole-containing polymer (poly(porphyrin-diketopyrrolopyrrole) (PPDPP)) shows impressive molar absorption coefficients from lambda=300 to 1000 nm. The photophysical and structural properties of PPDPP have been studied. With PPDPP as the electron donor and [ 6,6]phenyl C-71 butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as the electron acceptor, the bulk heterojunction polymer solar cell showed overall power conversion efficiencies of 4.18 and 6.44% for as-cast and two-step annealing processed PPDPP: PC71BM (1: 2) active layers, respectively. These results are quite impressive for porphyrin-containing polymers, especially when directly included in the p…

Random Structural Modification of a Low-Band-Gap BODIPY-Based Polymer

2017

International audience; A BODIPY thiophene polymer modified by extending conjugation of the BODIPY chromophore is reported. This modification induces tunability of energy levels and therefore absorption wavelengths in order to target lower energies.
