Coordination polymer flexibility leads to polymorphism and enables a crystalline solid-vapour reaction: a multi-technique mechanistic study.

2015

Despite an absence of conventional porosity, the 1D coordination polymer [Ag4 (O2 C(CF2 )2 CF3 )4 (TMP)3 ] (1; TMP=tetramethylpyrazine) can absorb small alcohols from the vapour phase, which insert into AgO bonds to yield coordination polymers [Ag4 (O2 C(CF2 )2 CF3 )4 (TMP)3 (ROH)2 ] (1-ROH; R=Me, Et, iPr). The reactions are reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations. Vapour-solid equilibria have been examined by gas-phase IR spectroscopy (K=5.68(9)×10(-5) (MeOH), 9.5(3)×10(-6) (EtOH), 6.14(5)×10(-5) (iPrOH) at 295 K, 1 bar). Thermal analyses (TGA, DSC) have enabled quantitative comparison of two-step reactions 1-ROH→1→2, in which 2 is the 2D coordination polymer [Ag4 (O2 …

Industrial application of selected lactic acid bacteria isolated from local semolinas for typical sourdough bread production

2016

Abstract Four obligate heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains (Weissella cibaria PON10030 and PON10032 and Leuconostoc citreum PON 10079 and PON10080) were tested as single strain starters, mono-species dual strain starters, and multiple strain starter for the preparation and propagation of sourdoughs for the production of a typical bread at industrial level. The kinetics of pH and TTA during the daily sourdough refreshments indicated a correct acidification process for all trials. The concentration of lactic and acetic acid increased consistently during fermentation. The resulting molar ratios between these two organic acids in the experimental trials were lower than those o…

Interactions among co-infecting parasite species: a mechanism maintaining genetic variation in parasites?

2008

Individuals of free-living organisms are often infected simultaneously by a community of parasites. If the co-infecting parasites interact, then this can add significantly to the diversity of host genotype×parasite genotype interactions. However, interactions between parasite species are usually not examined considering potential variation in interactions between different strain combinations of co-infecting parasites. Here, we examined the importance of interactions between strains of fish eye flukes Diplostomum spathaceum and Diplostomum gasterostei on their infectivity in naive fish hosts. We assessed the infection success of strains of both species in single-strain exposures and in co-…

Inflammation and Life-Span

2005

In their Review “Inflammatory exposure and historical changes in human life-spans” (17 Sept., p. [1736][1]), C. E. Finch and E. M. Crimmins reinforce earlier suggestions that many diseases and disabilities of older age have their roots in previous exposures to infectious agents and other sources

The Genetics of Innate Immunity and Inflammation in Ageing, Age-Related Diseases and Longevity

2008

Inflammation is a key component of age-related diseases such as atherosclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and genes coding for inflammatory or anti-inflammatory molecules are, therefore, good candidates for influencing the risk of developing these pathologies. Findings discussed in this chapter suggest that different alleles of genes coding for pro-or anti-inflammatory genes may affect individual life-span expectancy by influencing the type and intensity of immune-inflammatory responses against environmental stressors involved in the development of age-related disease. Our immune system has evolved to control pathogens and so pro-inflammatory responses are likely to be evolutionarily pro…

Polymorphism of Copper(I) Halide π-Complexes: Synthesis and Structure of a New Modification of [Cu2Cl2(CH2=CH–CH2)2O]

2008

A new polymorph of [Cu2Cl2(CH2=CH-CH 2)2O] has been obtained by an alternating-current electrochemical synthesis starting from CuCl2 and triallylphosphite. Diallylether was obtained in statu nascendi via transetherification of triallylphosphite. The structure is monoclinic, space group P21/n, a = 7.6738(7), b = 6.5128(4), c = 18.2689(18) A, β = 91.644(11)°, V = 912.67(13) A3 (at 150 K), Z = 4; R1 = 0.0339, wR2 = 0.0822. Flexibility of the organic ligand and weak interactions copper⋯halogen have been identified as the main reasons enabling polymorphism in molecular π-complexes of copper(I). ©2008 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Crystal Structures and Polymorphism of Nickel and Copper Coordination Polymers with Pyridine Ligands

2014

The crystal structures of a series of pyridine coordination polymers [MIICl2(C5H5N)x]n (M = Ni, Cu), prepared via thermal decomposition are reported. [NiCl2(C5H5N)4] (1) decomposes stepwise via [NiCl2(C5H5N)2]n (2), [NiCl2(C5H5N)]n (3), and [NiCl2(C5H5N)2/3]n (4), to NiCl2 with increasing temperature. The thermal decomposition of [CuCl2(C5H5N)2]n (5), progresses via two polymorphs of [CuCl2(C5H5N)]n (6a and 6b), and [CuCl2(C5H5N)2/3]n (7), to CuCl2. The compounds 3, 4, and 7 were prepared as pure phases. All crystal structures were determined by X-ray powder diffraction. Notably, the crystal structures of the polymorphs 6a and 6b were determined from powder diffraction data of a mixture of …

A trans-acting locus regulates an anti-viral expression network and type 1 diabetes risk

2010

Combined analyses of gene networks and DNA sequence variation can provide new insights into the aetiology of common diseases that may not be apparent from genome-wide association studies alone. Recent advances in rat genomics are facilitating systems-genetics approaches. Here we report the use of integrated genome-wide approaches across seven rat tissues to identify gene networks and the loci underlying their regulation. We defined an interferon regulatory factor 7 (IRF7)-driven inflammatory network (IDIN) enriched for viral response genes, which represents a molecular biomarker for macrophages and which was regulated in multiple tissues by a locus on rat chromosome 15q25. We show that Epst…

Sun exposure and PDZK1 genotype modulate PDZK1 gene expression in normal skin

2020

Human skin pigmentation results from the enzymatically controlled synthesis of melanin pigments in specialized organelles (melano‐somes) produced within epidermal melanocytes, followed by their transfer to neighboring keratinocytes and their distribution through‐out the epidermis.1 Constitutive skin pigmentation seems to be mostly genetically determined,2 being altered by numerous intrinsic and extrinsic factors affecting the epidermal melanin unit

Transforming growth factor beta1 T29C gene polymorphism and hypertension: relationship with cardiovascular and renal damage.

2008

Distribution of T29C TGFb1 gene polymorphism was analysed in 260 hypertensive and 134 normotensive subjects. Circulating TGFb1 and procollagen type III levels, microalbuminuria, left ventricular geometry and function were evaluated in all the hypertensives subgrouped according to T29C TGFb1 gene polymorphism. Circulating TGFb1by ELISA technique, procollagen type III by a specific radioimmunoassay, microalbuminuria by radioimmunoassay, left ventricular geometry and function by echocardiography were determined. All groups were comparable for gender, age and sex. Regarding T29C TGFb1 gene polymorphism, prevalence of TC or CC genotypes was significantly (pv0.05) higher in hypertensives than nor…
