Mixed Convolutions and Zak Transforms

In this chapter we introduce the mixed continuous–discrete and discrete–discrete convolutions. Important special cases of such convolutions are the polynomial and discrete splines, respectively. The Zak transforms, which are introduced in the chapter, provide integral representation of signals, which, in the following chapters, serves as a tool for the design of splines and spline-wavelets and operations over them. The exponential splines, which are the Zak transforms of polynomial and discrete B-splines are introduced. Explicit formulas for the characteristic functions of splines’ spaces are derived.
Pseudo-abelian integrals: Unfolding generic exponential case

The search for bounds on the number of zeroes of Abelian integrals is motivated, for instance, by a weak version of Hilbert's 16th problem (second part). In that case one considers planar polynomial Hamiltonian perturbations of a suitable polynomial Hamiltonian system, having a closed separatrix bounding an area filled by closed orbits and an equilibrium. Abelian integrals arise as the first derivative of the displacement function with respect to the energy level. Monads in double categories

We extend the basic concepts of Street's formal theory of monads from the setting of 2-categories to that of double categories. In particular, we introduce the double category Mnd(C) of monads in a double category C and define what it means for a double category to admit the construction of free monads. Our main theorem shows that, under some mild conditions, a double category that is a framed bicategory admits the construction of free monads if its horizontal 2-category does. We apply this result to obtain double adjunctions which extend the adjunction between graphs and categories and the adjunction between polynomial endofunctors and polynomial monads.
Central Polynomials of Algebras and Their Growth

A polynomial in noncommutative variables taking central values in an algebra A is called a central polynomial of A. For instance the algebra of k × k matrices has central polynomials. For general algebras the existence of central polynomials is not granted. Nevertheless if an algebra has such polynomials, how can one measure how many are there?
Vanishing Abelian integrals on zero-dimensional cycles

In this paper we study conditions for the vanishing of Abelian integrals on families of zero-dimensional cycles. That is, for any rational function $f(z)$, characterize all rational functions $g(z)$ and zero-sum integers $\{n_i\}$ such that the function $t\mapsto\sum n_ig(z_i(t))$ vanishes identically. Here $z_i(t)$ are continuously depending roots of $f(z)-t$. We introduce a notion of (un)balanced cycles. The Schur property on projective and injective tensor products

The problem of whether the Schur property is passed from a Banach space to its (symmetric) projective n-fold tensor product is reformu lated in the language of polynomial ideals. As a result, a very closely related question is solved in the negative. It is also proved that the injective tensor product of infrabarrelled locally convex spaces with the Schur property has the Schur property as well.
Trace identities and almost polynomial growth

In this paper we study algebras with trace and their trace polynomial identities over a field of characteristic 0. We consider two commutative matrix algebras: $D_2$, the algebra of $2\times 2$ diagonal matrices and $C_2$, the algebra of $2 \times 2$ matrices generated by $e_{11}+e_{22}$ and $e_{12}$. We describe all possible traces on these algebras and we study the corresponding trace codimensions. Moreover we characterize the varieties with trace of polynomial growth generated by a finite dimensional algebra. As a consequence, we see that the growth of a variety with trace is either polynomial or exponential.
POLYNOMIAL NUMERICAL INDEX FOR SOME COMPLEX VECTOR-VALUED FUNCTION SPACES

We study in this paper the relation between the polynomial numerical indices of a complex vector-valued function space and the ones of its range space. It is proved that the spaces C(K,X), and L∞(μ,X) have the same polynomial numerical index as the complex Banach space X for every compact Hausdorff space K and every σ-finite measure μ, which does not hold any more in the real case. We give an example of a complex Banach space X such that, for every k > 2, the polynomial numerical index of order k of X is the greatest possible, namely 1, while the one of X∗∗ is the least possible, namely k k 1−k . Locally tame plane polynomial automorphisms

Abstract For automorphisms of a polynomial ring in two variables over a domain R , we show that local tameness implies global tameness provided that every 2-generated locally free R -module of rank 1 is free. We give examples illustrating this property.
Varieties of special Jordan algebras of almost polynomial growth

Abstract Let J be a special Jordan algebra and let c n ( J ) be its corresponding codimension sequence. The aim of this paper is to prove that in case J is finite dimensional, such a sequence is polynomially bounded if and only if the variety generated by J does not contain U J 2 , the special Jordan algebra of 2 × 2 upper triangular matrices. As an immediate consequence, we prove that U J 2 is the only finite dimensional special Jordan algebra that generates a variety of almost polynomial growth.
