Feeding Dairy Ewes with Fresh or Dehydrated Sulla (Sulla coronarium L.) Forage. 2. Effects on Cheese Enrichment in Bioactive Molecules
2022
Sulla is a tanniferous legume species largely used as fresh or preserved forage in the ruminants’ diets. Due to its content in polyphenols with antioxidant activity, especially condensed tannins (CT), fresh sulla forage (FSF), when eaten by ruminants, is able to enrich animal products with antioxidant molecules and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) that are beneficial for consumers’ health. Dehydration represents a valid alternative to haymaking to preserve these properties also in periods when FSF is unavailable. In this research, the effects of ewes’ diets based on sulla hay (SH), pelleted dehydrated sulla forage (DSF) or FSF were evaluated on cheese physico-chemical tr…

Whisky can be described as a complex matrix integrating the chemical history from the fermented cereals, the wooden barrels, the specific distillery processes, aging, and environmental factors. In this study, using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) and liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), we analyzed 150 whisky samples from 49 different distilleries, 7 countries, and ranging from 1 day new make spirit to 43 years of maturation with different types of barrel. Chemometrics revealed the unexpected impact of the wood history on the distillate's composition during barrel aging, regardless of the whisky origin. Flavonols, ol…
Evaluating the impact of supercritical-CO2 pressure on the recovery and quality of oil from “horchata” by-products: Fatty acid profile, α-tocopherol,…
2019
Abstract The effect of supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) (10–40 MPa) and conventional extraction (CE) to recover oil from by-products obtained during “horchata” production was assessed. To evaluate both extraction techniques, the fatty acid composition, polyphenols, α-tocopherol, antioxidant capacity and lipid oxidation parameters of the extracts obtained were analysed. A linear relationship between extraction pressure and oil yield was observed. However, the highest oil yield was obtained under conventional extraction. The by-products from “horchata” presented a profile where monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) were the predominant, representing ≈ 70% of total fatty acids. The amount of…
Resveratrol: distribución, propiedades y perspectivas
2013
Resveratrol is a natural polyphenol which can be found in many plants and fruits, such as peanuts, mulberries, blueberries and, above all, in grapes and red wine. Its synthesis is regulated by the presence of stressful factors, such as fungal contamination and ultra-violet radiation. In plants, it plays a role as a phytoalexin, showing a capacity to inhibit the development of certain infections. Plant extracts which contain resveratrol have been employed by traditional medicine for more than 2000 years. Resveratrol was first isolated, and its properties were initially studied with scientific methods, thirty years ago. Its in vitro properties have been extensively studied and demonstrated. I…
Flavanones in Citrus fruit: structure-antioxidant activity relationships
2005
Epidemiological surveys have shown an inverse relationship between the intake of fruit and the incidence of coronary heart disease and some type of cancer. Data found in the literature regarding the flavonoids in general while this study focuses on flavanones, a subclass of flavonoids which occurs in Citrus fruit. The aim of this work is to elucidate the antioxidant or pro-oxidant behaviours of some common flavanones and to determine their activity–structure relationships as antioxidant using the crocin bleaching inhibition assay. The compounds studied were regarding both the aglycon form and the glycoside form. Data evidence that the substitution of the 7th OH group of the flavanones by a …
Bioactive Components from Leaf Vegetable Products
2014
Abstract Traditionally, plant-based products have been used for different purposes. From ancient times, people on all continents have long applied poultices and imbibed infusions of indigenous plants. Numerous reports regarding the use of leaf vegetable products for the treatment of many human diseases have been made. Proven medicinal properties include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, antibacterial, and antiviral effects. Most of these properties can be attributed to its high content in bioactive compounds. Bioactive compounds are secondary metabolites of plants, which are extra nutritional constituents that typically occur in small quantities in foods. They are being intensiv…
Immobilization of vegetable tannins on tannery chrome shavings and their use for the removal of hexavalent chromium from contaminated water
2011
Abstract Chestnut (C) and mimosa (M) tannins immobilized on chrome shavings (CS) as an adsorbent have been proposed to be an efficient and economical alternative in hexavalent chromium removal from aqueous solutions. The adsorption of hexavalent chromium onto chrome shavings-tannin (CS-T) adsorbents was performed using batch equilibrium technique at 25 ± 2 °C. The effect of pH is highly important especially in the case of high concentrations of hexavalent chromium. The maximum chromium uptake was obtained at pH 4. Two hours of contact time are enough to reach equilibrium. Sorption of chromium on CS-T was found to follow a pseudo-second order kinetic model (with correlation coefficients grea…
Sequestering Ability of Aminopolycarboxylic (APCs) and Aminopolyphosphonic (APPs) Ligands Toward Palladium(II) in Aqueous Solution
2014
The binding capacity of three aminopolycarboxylates [nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), ethylene-glycol-bis(2-aminoethyl ether)-N,N,N,N-tetraacetic acid (EGTA), and diethylenetriamine-N,N,N,NN-pentaacetic acid (DTPA)] and two aminopolyphosphonates {(1-hydroxyethane-1,1-diyl)bis(phosphonic acid) (HEDP) and [[(phosphonomethyl)imino]bis[2,1-ethanediylnitrilobis(methylene)]] tetrakis-phosphonic acid (DTPP)} toward palladium(II) ion was studied by potentiometric and spectrophotometric titrations at different temperatures (283.15 ≤ T/K ≤ 318.15) and ionic strengths (0.1 ≤ I/mol·dm -3 ≤ 1.0) in NaClO4. The hydrolysis of Pd2+ and the protonation of ligands were always taken into account in the speciation…
Considering lithium-ion battery 3D-printing via thermoplastic material extrusion and polymer powder bed fusion
2021
Abstract In this paper, the ability to 3D print lithium-ion batteries through Pmnbspace thermoplastic material extrusion and polymer powder bed fusion is considered. Focused on the formulation of positive electrodes composed of polypropylene, LiFePO4 as active material, and conductive additives, advantages and drawbacks of both additive manufacturing technologies, are thoroughly discussed from the electrochemical, electrical, morphological and mechanical perspectives. Based on these preliminary results, strategies to further optimize the electrochemical performances are proposed. Through a comprehensive modeling study, the enhanced electrochemical suitability at high current densities of va…
