SALINITY EFFECTS ON ENZYMATIC BROWNING AND ANTIOXIDANT CAPACITY OF FRESH-CUT BABY ROMAINE LETTUCE (LACTUCA SATIVA L. CV. DUENDE)
2010
Abstract Enzymatic browning is a main problem encountered in minimal processing and further storage of leafy vegetables, leading to shorter shelf-life of products. Changes in the two oxidative activities, polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and peroxidase (POD), as well as in total phenolic content, colour parameters and antioxidant capacity (assayed with ORAC method), were monitored during 10 days of storage at 4 °C of minimally processed baby Romaine lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L. cv. Duende) cultivated under three different salinity conditions (2.8, 3.8 and 4.8 dS m −1 ), in order to determine the most suitable condition for further processing. Increasing levels of salinity reduced both oxidases activ…
Effect of grape pomace from red cultivar 'Nero d’Avola' on the microbiological, physicochemical, phenolic profile and sensory aspects of ovine Vasted…
2022
Abstract Aims The purpose of this study was to functionalize an ovine stretched cheese belonging to 'Vastedda' typology with red grape pomace powder (GPP) of Nero d’Avola cultivar and to characterize the microbiological, physicochemical, phenolic profile and sensory characteristics of the final cheeses. Methods and Results Before cheeses production, GPP was characterized for its microbiological profile, antibacterial activity and polyphenolic content. No colonies of bacteria and yeasts were detected in the GPP. GPP showed a large inhibition spectrum against spoilage and pathogenic bacteria. Three classes of polyphenolic compounds belonging to flavan-3-ols, flavonol and phenolic acids were i…
Polymer mechanical recycling: downcycling or upcycling?
2004
Recycled plastics are considered as materials with physical, mechanical and aesthetic properties worse than the virgin ones. In fact, this is true because degradation during lifetime and during the recycling operations changes the structure and the morphology of the polymers and then the final properties of the secondary material. Several “strategies” are under investigation, and in some cases also applied, in order to avoid further degradation during recycling and, if possible, to repair the macromolecules broken during lifetime and then to restore or to improve the initial properties. In this paper the more important techniques, already used in industry or under investigation, according …
The appropriateness of colonoscopies at a teaching hospital: magnitude, associated factors, and comparison of EPAGE and EPAGE-II criteria.
2011
Background The growing demand for colonoscopies and inappropriate colonoscopies have become a significant problem for health care. Objectives To assess the appropriateness of colonoscopies and to analyze the association with some clinical and organizational factors. To compare the results of the European Panel of Appropriateness of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (EPAGE) and the EPAGE-II criteria. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Endoscopy unit of a teaching hospital in Spain. Patients Patients referred for colonoscopy, excluding urgent, therapeutic indications, and poor cleansing. Main Outcome Measurements Appropriateness of colonoscopies according to the EPAGE criteria. Results From 749 c…
Arthropod-induced neoplastic formations on trees change photosynthetic pigment levels and oxidative enzyme activities
2005
Abstract In order to test the hypothesis that arthropod-induced neoplastic formations on trees affect biochemical characteristics of both the newly formed galls and host plant tissues, biochemical characteristics with a possible adaptive role were determined in nine gall-former–host tree combinations. Photosynthetic pigments, extractable protein content, and oxidative enzyme activities were determined in gall tissues, leaf tissues of galled leaves, and leaves on ungalled tree branches. Neoplastic tissues were characterized by a low content of photosynthetic pigments, decreased chlorophyll a/b ratio, lower extractable protein content, and decreased activities of peroxidase and polyphenol oxi…
Prescribing behaviour of practitioners in public and private hospitals in Pakistan evaluated using the World Health Organization (WHO) indicators: A …
2017
Summary Introduction The non-rational use of medicines by medical practitioner in their prescribing practices might lead to therapeutic failure. The aim of this research was to evaluate medical prescriptions and to highlight differences in behaviour between prescribers of public and private hospitals in Karachi (Pakistan). Materials and methods This is a retrospective study conducted between November 2015 to October 2016 in 4 public hospitals and 4 private hospitals in Karachi. A total of 120,096 (n) prescriptions were collected from both public and private hospitals. The data were evaluated with WHO indicators for rational use of medicines. Results The average number of drugs per prescript…
DNA image cytometry
1992
In 68 patients the DNA content of tumor cells was measured by image cytometry after resection of the rectum because of cancer. In the DNA histogram a differentiation between diploid (n = 19), polyploid (n = 24), hypotriploid (n = 17), and hypertriploid (n = 8) tumors was possible. The best relapse-free survival time was found in patients with diploid tumors. The prognosis worsened from polyploid to hypotriploid and was worse in hypertriploid tumors. Testing for a prognostic advantage of diploid over aneuploid tumors without adjustment for additional factors simply by means of the log-rank statistic gave a (one-sided) P of 0.1013. In a multivariate analysis the degree of differentiation turn…
Influence of the functionalisation of mesoporous silica material UVM-7 on polyphenol oxidase enzyme capture and enzymatic browning
2020
Polyphenol oxidase (PPO), also known as tyrosinase and catechol oxidase, is the enzyme responsible for enzymatic browning in foods. It causes undesirable organoleptic, nutritional and colour changes. Here, we report the preparation of five nanomaterials and a study of their ability to modulate PPO enzyme activity. The materials consist of UVM-7 supports (a mesoporous silica material) modified with diverse functional groups (i.e. amine, carboxylic acid, isocyanate, alkane and pyridine). We also studied the PPO immobilisation capability of the materials. All the materials, except the carboxylic acid functionalised one, offer high PPO loading capabilities and the immobilisation speed increases…
Active properties of edible marine polysaccharide-based coatings containing Larrea nitida polyphenols enriched extract.
2020
The aim of this work was to develop active edible coatings based on marine polysaccharide matrices and polyphenols-enriched native plant extracts from arid and semiarid regions of Argentina. Initially, five plant extracts were characterized in terms of antioxidant, antibacterial and antiviral activity and the one with better biological properties and no toxicity or genotoxicity, Larrea nitida (Ln) extract, was incorporated into agar, alginate or agar/alginate matrices. The Ln extract-containing films were characterized in terms of physicochemical and polyphenols release performance in food simulants. The incorporation of Ln extract provided darker films, with a more saturated orange-brownis…
Investigation on the influence of spray-drying technology on the quality of Sicilian Nero d’Avola wines
2018
The purpose of the present work was to find a correlation between microencapsulation technology applied to wines and the resulting quality of the wine itself in terms of volatile composition and phenolic profile. To this aim, samples of Nero d'Avola wines produced in Sicily (Italy) were investigated in order to: i) elucidate the aromatic composition by means of HSâSPME coupled with GCâMS; ii) assess the polyphenolic content by UHPLC mass spectrometry; iii) compare the results obtained from both the screenings with those relative to the same wines that had previously been subjected to spray-drying. The results showed a marked reductionThe results here obtained evidenced a marked reductio…
