Hospitalization and mortality among the elderly exposed to polytherapy and at risk of adverse drug reactions
2017
The increase in comorbidities due to an aging population determines a marked increase in the use of drugs (polypharmacy), which in turn carries a high risk of drug-drug interactions. This Paper will analyze the relationship between exposure to adverse drug interactions, and hospitalization and mortality in a cohort of elderly patients, living in a local Health Unit in Palermo, Italy. These patients were exposed to drugs whose concurrent use is contraindicated during the period 1.1.2014 - 30.12.2014. After a description of the most common drugs involved in adverse reactions, an evaluation of the extent of hospitalization and mortality will be performed. The results will demonstrate that ther…
FACTORS AFFECTING THE SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC QUANTIFICATION OF FLAVONOIDS IN WINE
2019
The quantification of flavonoids in wine and grape skin extract by spectrophotometric evaluation at 280 nm wavelength provides essential information to oenologist concerning wine composition and evolution, and it is commonly applied in wine labs. The measurement of the absorption peak height at 280 nm reported by DI STEFANO and GUIDONI (1989) allows to selectively quantify flavonoids with minor interferences. However, it has proved to be susceptible to SO2 at low pH or acetone in unpurified grape skin extracts. Moreover, the effect of pH on flavonoids quantification in wine, either containing SO2 or not, has not been assessed. The effect of SO2, purification, pH and dilution solvent on spec…

Prickly pear pulp in the feeding of livestock ruminants: preliminary investigation
2019
In Sicily, the current increasing cultivation of Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill. corresponds to a availability of prickly pears pulp (PPP) that residues from fruits processing for juice extraction, comprised of peel, pulp and seeds. This investigation aim to evaluate the nutritional traits of PPP for ruminants feeding, and the effect of potassium metabisulfite (PMB) as a natural stabilizer to limit initial rapid PPP fermentation. The by-product, collected in August, included 28% of peel and pulp (PP) and 72% of seeds on dry matter (DM), with seeds higher in ether extract (EE) and NDF and comparable for DM and crude protein (CP) (DM 35.5, 35.9 and 35.6%; EE 6.5, 3.6 and 8.5% DM; CP 6.5, 6.0 …

Effect of Enculturation on the Semantic and Acoustic Correlates of Polyphonic Timbre
2011
polyphonic timbre perception was investigated in a cross-cultural context wherein Indian and Western nonmusicians rated short Indian and Western popular music excerpts (1.5 s, n = 200) on eight bipolar scales. Intrinsic dimensionality estimation revealed a higher number of perceptual dimensions in the timbre space for music from one's own culture. Factor analyses of Indian and Western participants' ratings resulted in highly similar factor solutions. The acoustic features that predicted the perceptual dimensions were similar across the two participant groups. Furthermore, both the perceptual dimensions and their acoustic correlates matched closely with the results of a previous study perfor…

Cyclo- and Polyphosphazenes for Biomedical Applications
2022
Cyclic and polyphosphazenes are extremely interesting and versatile substrates characterized by the presence of -P=N- repeating units. The chlorine atoms on the P atoms in the starting materials can be easily substituted with a variety of organic substituents, thus giving rise to a huge number of new materials for industrial applications. Their properties can be designed considering the number of repetitive units and the nature of the substituent groups, opening up to a number of peculiar properties, including the ability to give rise to supramolecular arrangements. We focused our attention on the extensive scientific literature concerning their biomedical applications: as antimicrobial age…

Changes in mechanical properties and reasons for twisting behaviour of thermoformed polypropylene lids is studied. The study is based on the investigation of changes in molecular weight distribution and crystallinity of isotactic polypropylene during extrusion process with different process parameters. Also the effect of additives and re-grinded material is studied. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was used in measurements of molecular weight distributions and crystallinities of polypropylene was measured with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Process parameters don't have any effect on mechanical properties of the lids but twisting behaviour diminish considerably by changing the …
Polysarcosine-Based Lipids: From Lipopolypeptoid Micelles to Stealth-Like Lipids in Langmuir Blodgett Monolayers.
2016
Amphiphiles and, in particular, PEGylated lipids or alkyl ethers represent an important class of non-ionic surfactants and have become key ingredients for long-circulating (“stealth”) liposomes. While poly-(ethylene glycol) (PEG) can be considered the gold standard for stealth-like materials, it is known to be neither a bio-based nor biodegradable material. In contrast to PEG, polysarcosine (PSar) is based on the endogenous amino acid sarcosine (N-methylated glycine), but has also demonstrated stealth-like properties in vitro, as well as in vivo. In this respect, we report on the synthesis and characterization of polysarcosine based lipids with C14 and C18 hydrocarbon chains and their end g…
