Charles LeGeyt Fortescue and the method of symmetrical components

The author gives a brief review of the life and work of Charles LeGeyt Fortescue with particular reference to his 1918 paper on the "Method of Symmetrical Co-Ordinates Applied to the Solution of Polyphase Networks" which grew out of his investigations of problems related to railway electrification, which began in 1913. As a postlude to the author's article, the paper presents Fortescue's own writing on the topic of symmetrical components, which he included in a document he produced on 8 October 1934, titled "High Points in My Career".

Ileo-ileal invagination--a cause of recurrent mid-gastrointestinal bleeding: diagnostic and endoscopic therapy by means of push-and-pull enteroscopy.

The types of lesions that cause bleeding in the small bowel are similar to those found in other areas in the gastrointestinal tract, such as vascular malformations, ulcers and inflammatory lesions, neoplasms and other less common lesions like Meckel's diverticulum. This report describes three patients with suspected mid-gastrointestinal bleeding with no significant past medical history. Background and study aims Several factors predict difficult or incomplete colonoscopy with a standard colonoscope, including female gender, low body mass index, extensive diverticulosis, and prior pelvic surgery. BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and clinical impact of push-and-pull enteroscopy (PPE) in patients with suspected or documented small-bowel diseases, in a prospective multicenter trial in three European medical centers. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 100 patients (mean age 56 +/- 16 years; range 13 - 90) were included at the three institutions between July and November 2004. The leading symptoms were: acute recurrent or chronic gastrointestinal bleeding (n = 64), polyposis syndrome (n = 8), chronic abdominal pain (n = 7), chronic diarrhea (n = 7), and others (n = 14). Sarraute's plays : poplyphony and enunciation

The corpus is formed of six plays of Nathalie Sarraute; it hides a duplication of enunciation types in the characters’ dialogue. This duplication is latent due to personal pronouns and verb tenses’ neutralization. The transition from an enunciation layer to another is not marked at all or not traditionally marked. Therefore, deciphering will be more complicated to any reader, listener or spectator. These works of art are also highly polyphonic in terms of enunciation as in semantics, as several voices are intertwined and as the characters resort to authorities of point of view. Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) is one of the most important methods of phosphorus removal in municipal wastewater treatment plants, having been described by different modelling approaches. In this process, the PAOs (polyphosphate accumulating organisms) and GAOs (glycogen accumulating organisms) compete for volatile fatty acids uptake under anaerobic conditions. Effect of intracellular P content on phosphate removal in Scenedesmus sp. Experimental study and kinetic expression

The present work determines the effect of phosphorus content on phosphate uptake rate in a mixed culture of Chlorophyceae in which the genus Scenedesmus dominates. Phosphate uptake rate was determined in eighteen laboratory batch experiments, with samples taken from a progressively more P-starved culture in which a minimum P content of 0.11% (w/w) was achieved. The results obtained showed that the higher the internal biomass P content, the lower the phosphate removal rate. The highest specific phosphate removal rate was 6.5 mgPO4 P gTSS -1 h -1 . Calibration of denitrifying activity of polyphosphate accumulating organisms in an extended ASM2d model

Abstract This paper presents the results of an experimental study for the modelling and calibration of denitrifying activity of polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) in full-scale WWTPs that incorporate simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal. Interactions between calcium precipitation and the polyphosphate-accumulating bacteria metabolism

A sequencing batch reactor that is operated for biological phosphorus removal has been operated under different influent calcium concentrations to study the precipitation process and the possible effects of phosphorus precipitation in the biological phosphorus removal process. Four experiments were carried out under different influent calcium concentrations ranging from 10 to 90 g Ca m(-3).
