Background and objective: Statin-induced myopathy (SIM) has been partially attributed to deficiency of dolichol and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). We aimed to test the safety and efficacy of plant polyprenols in combination with CoQ10 for alleviation of SIM. Materials and methods: In an open-label, one-center prospective pilot study patients with SIM received conifer-tree needle polyprenols (4 mg/day) and CoQ10 (100 mg/day) for 8 weeks. Modulation of P450 enzymes by Cuban natural products rich in polyphenolic compounds in rat hepatocytes.

This paper reports cytotoxic effects and changes in the P450 system after exposing rat hepatocytes to four polyphenol-rich products widely used in Cuban traditional medicine (Mangifera indica L. (MSBE), Thalassia testudinum (Tt), Erythroxylum minutifolium and confusum extracts). Effects of mangiferin, the main polyphenol in MSBE, were also evaluated. Cytotoxicity was assayed by the MTT test after exposure of cells to the products (50-1000 microg/mL) for 24 or 72 h. The results showed that 500 microg/mL MSBE was moderately cytotoxic after 72 h, while mangiferin was not. The present study was conducted to characterize the superior olivary complex (SOC) of the lower brain stem in the pigmented Djungarian hamster Phodopus sungorus. Using Nissl-stained serial cryostat sections from fresh-frozen brains, we determined the borders of the SOC nuclei. Abstract We investigated the possibility that pituitary adenylate cyclase activating peptide (PACAP) has a role in the control of contractility in the mouse ileum. PACAP-(1-27) produced tetrodotoxin (TTX)-insensitive, concentration-dependent reduction of the amplitude of the spontaneous contractions of longitudinal muscle up to their complete disappearance. This effect was inhibited by PACAP-(6-38), PACAP receptor antagonist, and by apamin, blocker of small-conductance Ca2+-activated K+-channels. Nω-nitro- l -arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), nitric oxide (NO) synthase inhibitor, reduced the PACAP-inhibitory response, and the joint application of apamin plus L-NAME produced additive effects. …
