Process parameters of microsphere preparation based on propylene carbonate emulsion-precursors.

2020

This study aimed for a detailed understanding of the impact of different process parameters involved during celecoxib-loaded microsphere preparation based on propylene carbonate emulsion-precursors.Microspheres were prepared by a modified emulsification-solvent extraction method. Performed investigations included polymer solubility and viscosity, microsphere size, morphology and stability, propylene carbonate content as well as celecoxib solid state, content and release.Rough-walled round microspheres with sizes between 21 µm and 122 µm and an internal sponge-like structure filled with residual propylene carbonate (content between 1.9 ± 0.1% and 6.7 ± 0.5% w/w) were obtained. Encapsulation …

Incorporation of an antibiotic in poly(lactic acid) and polypropylene by melt processing

2016

Purpose In this work an antibiotic, ciprofloxacin (CFX), was incorporated into 2 different polymeric matrices, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and polypropylene (PP), to provide them with antimicrobial properties. The influence of CFX content on release kinetics and on antimicrobial and mechanical properties was evaluated. Methods CFX was incorporated into both the polymers by melt mixing. Results The effect of CFX incorporation was found to strongly depend on which polymer matrix was used. In particular, the antimicrobial tests revealed that PLA samples containing CFX produced no inhibition zone and only a slight antibacterial activity was observed when the highest concentration of CFX was added t…

Laser Welding - Suitable for Vascular Anastomosis?

1994

Carotid arteries of 21 piglets were transsected and reanastomosed either by laser welding (Neodym:YAG laser) or by conventional suture anastomosis. Histological specimens of the anastomoses obtained 2 to 32 days after the operation showed less foreign body reaction and intimal hyperplasia after laser welding than after suturing. There was, however, no significant difference when comparing occurrence of thrombosis, patency rate, or growth of the anastomosis in growing animals. Neither our study nor a review of the literature of laser-assisted vascular anastomosis in microvessels and large arteries up to 5 mm diameter could establish a definite clinical application for laser welding in vascul…

Biologic response of inguinal hernia prosthetics: a comparative study of conventional static meshes versus 3D dynamic implants.

2015

Despite improvements in prosthetics and surgical techniques, the rate of complications following inguinal hernia repair remains high. Among these, discomfort and chronic pain have become a source of increasing concern among surgeons. Poor quality of tissue ingrowth, such as thin scar plates or shrinking scars-typical results with conventional static implants and plugs-may contribute to these adverse events. Recently, a new type of 3D dynamically responsive implant was introduced to the market. This device, designed to be placed fixation-free, seems to induce ingrowth of viable and structured tissue instead of regressive fibrotic scarring. To elucidate the differences in biologic response be…

Durability of a strach-based biodegradable polymer

2007

Abstract The photo-oxidation and the photo-stabilization of a commercial biodegradable polymer have been investigated in order to establish the possibility of using this polymer as raw material for films for agriculture. The degradation has been followed by measuring the mechanical properties as a function of photo-oxidation time and in particular by following the elongation at break. The virgin polymer, made from maize starch and a synthetic biodegradable polyester, shows poor resistance to the UV irradiation as observed by the fast decay of the elongation at break, but the presence of small amounts of conventional UV stabilizers strongly improves the durability of this polymer. The UV sta…

Acute inflammatory response after inguinal and incisional hernia repair with implantation of polypropylene mesh of different size.

2005

The purpose of this study was to assess the modifications of interleukin (IL)-6, C-reactive protein (CRP), leukocytes and fibrinogen after implantation of polypropylene mesh.Thirty-six patients were included in this study and divided into two groups. To the first group were allocated patients affected by inguinal hernia and undergoing conventional repair (subgroup Ia) or hernioplasty with 40-cm(2) polypropylene mesh (subgroup Ib). To the second group were allocated patients affected by incisional hernia and undergoing conventional repair (subgroup IIa) or incisional hernia repair with 400-cm(2) polypropylene mesh (subgroup IIb). Peripheral venous blood samples were collected 24 h before sur…

Biomechanical and histological evaluation of abdominal wall compliance with intraperitoneal onlay mesh implants in rabbits: A comparison of six diffe…

2012

Abstract Background An ideal prosthetic mesh for incisional hernia repair should mimic the anisotropic compliance of the abdominal wall, and at lower loads should exhibit higher distensibility without impairment of safety at higher loads. This study evaluated the biomechanical properties of six meshes in a rabbit model. Methods New Zealand white rabbits were used for this study. Two meshes of the same brand (Ethicon Physiomesh™, Bard Composix ® L/P, Gore Dualmesh ® , Bard Sepramesh ® , Ethicon Proceed ® or Parietex™ Composite) were implanted into each animal for assessment of intra-abdominal hernia repair, with a total of ten meshes per group. Twelve weeks after implantation, the abdominal …

Laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy in the treatment of vaginal vault prolapse: 8 years experience

2009

Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term results of a laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy for the treatment of vaginal vault prolapse. Study design Between January 1999 and January 2007, 165 laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy procedures, using a polypropylene mesh, were performed on women affected by vaginal vault prolapse. Intraoperative complications included: 5 bladder injuries and 3 sigmoid perforations. Postoperative complications included: 10 cases of fever, 5 cases of lumbosciatica, 15 cases of detrusor overactivity, 2 cases of vaginal haematoma, and 5 cases of minimal dispareunia. At 1, 6 and 12 months after surgery, a clinical evaluation was carried out for all patie…
