Surface Characteristics of Machined Polystyrene with 3D Printed Thermoplastic Tool

2020

An effort is made in this work to appraise the surface characteristics of machined expandable polystyrene (EPS) with a novel 3D printed thermoplastic acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) tool. Linear grooves on EPS were made on a vertical milling machine that was modified to conduct experiments in the laboratory. The tests were designed as per the Taguchi L9 based factorial design of experimentation while varying process parameters such as depth of cut, spindle speed, and feed rate. The machining responses dimensional accuracy and surface roughness of the machined grooves were studied. Furthermore, the surface topography of the machined specimens was considered to investigate the mechanism…

Protein denaturation caused by heat inactivation detrimentally affects biomolecular corona formation and cellular uptake

2018

Adsorption of blood proteins to the surface of nanocarriers is known to be the critical factor influencing cellular interactions and eventually determining the successful application of nanocarriers as drug carriers in vivo. There is an increasing number of reports summarizing large data sets of all identified corona proteins. However, to date our knowledge about the multiple mechanisms mediating interactions between proteins and nanocarriers is still limited. In this study, we investigate the influence of protein structure on the adsorption process and focus on the effect of heat inactivation of serum and plasma, which is a common cell culture procedure used to inactivate the complement sy…

Interfacial stabilization by soft Janus nanoparticles

2016

Abstract The stabilization of water/air, water/oil and water/solid interfaces by Janus particles with polystyrene (PS) and poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) hemispheres was systematically investigated. The stabilization of these interfaces is of relevance for the formulation of foams, emulsions and dispersions. The Janus particles were prepared from micellar solutions of polystyrene-b-polyisoprene-b-poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) (PS-PI-PtBMA) triblock terpolymers by selective cross-linking of the polyisoprene domain on a multi-gram scale, followed by hydrolysis of the PtBMA block. For the investigation of water/oil-emulsions a series of hydrophobic oils (paraffin oil, xylene, peanut oil, isopro…

Concentration dependence of amplified spontaneous emission in two oligo-(p-phenylenevinylene) derivatives

2005

Amplified spontaneous emission sASEd in optically pumped polystyrene sPSd films doped with two different oligo-sp-phenylenevinylened derivatives sOPVsd, with three s3-OPVd and five s5-OPVd monomer units is reported. It is observed that there is a maximum content of oligomer s25 wt. % for 3-OPV and 20 wt. % for 5-OPVd that can be introduced in the films, due to degradation sin 3-OPVd and ASE quenching sin 5-OPVd. Optimal concentrations swith minimum pump-intensity thresholds for the observation of ASEd of 15 wt. % and 9 wt. % are measured for the trimer and the pentamer, respectively. The concentration dependence of the ASE threshold is discussed in terms of the optical absorption spectra. G…

Observation of interaction forces by investigation of the influence of eluent additives on the retention behavior of aqueous nanoparticle dispersions…

2020

The investigation and subsequent understanding of the interactions of nanomaterials with components of their surrounding media is important to be able to evaluate both potential use cases as well as potential risks for human health and for the environment. To investigate such interactions, asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) is an interesting analytical tool. This statement grounds on the fact that interactions of the analyte with the membrane and with components of the eluent are crucial for the retention behavior of the analyte within the field-flow fractionation (FFF) channel. Therefore, the investigation of the retention behavior provides an insight in the nature of the int…

We report a novel multi-step method for the preparation of ordered mesoporous titania scaffolds and show an illustrative example of their application to solar cells. The method is based on (monolayer) colloidal nanosphere lithography that makes use of polystyrene nanoparticles organised at a water–air interface and subsequently transferred onto a solid substrate. A titania precursor solution (titanium(IV) isopropoxide in ethanol) is then drop-cast onto the monolayer and left to “incubate” overnight. Surprisingly, instead of the expected inverse monolayer-structure, a subsequent calcination step of the precursor yields an ordered monolayer of hollow titania nanospheres with a wall thickness …

Cell wall protein and glycoprotein constituents of Aspergillus fumigatus that bind to polystyrene may be responsible for the cell surface hydrophobic…

1996

Cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH) of Aspergillus fumigatus grown both in complex medium (yeast extract/peptone/dextrose; YPD) and minimal (Vogel's N) medium was monitored by assessing attachment of polystyrene microspheres to the cell surface. It was found that mature mycelium was hydrophobic. Treatment of intact mycelium with beta-mercaptoethanol (beta ME) abolished binding of the microspheres to hyphal elements, and coating of the microspheres with beta ME extracts from mycelium inhibited their attachment to intact mycelial cells. A. fumigatus mycelium was tagged in vivo with biotin and treated with beta ME. The beta ME extracts were analysed by SDS-PAGE and Western blotting with both per…

Zur Autoxydation von Polystyrol

1971

Sedimentation of dissolved macromolecules in the vicinity of the consolute point 1. Strictly binary systems and kinetic considerations

1986

This paper analyzes the effect of gravity on polymer solutions near the consolute point. Calculations are carried out for monodisperse polystyrene in cyclohexane using the Flory-Huggins expression with a concentration-dependent interaction parameter for the free energy of mixing. Depending on molecular weight and distance to the demixing temperature, the influence of gravity leads to non-negligible gradients of the volume fraction in the one-phase region as well as in the two-phase region. In particular, the effect of gravity on the measurement of the coexistence curve in a finite sample is calculated explicitly.

Compatibility between polystyrene copolymers and polymers in solution via hydrogen bonding

2006

Abstract It has been applied the concept of improving miscibility, by introducing and optimizing the extent of intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions between two polymers. We select a commodity polymer such as polystyrene, to study the compatibility in chloroform with poly(vinyl pyridine) and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), both considered as proton acceptors. In order to enhance polymer–polymer miscibility, polystyrene is slightly modified by copolymerization with methacrylic acid, in the first case, and with vinyl-phenol comonomer, in the second one. In this way, two series of polystyrene-based copolymers are synthesized and characterized bearing ca. 8% (w/w) of –OH groups. The miscibility…
