Novel prolinamide-supported polystyrene as highly stereoselective and recyclable organocatalyst for the aldol reaction

2008

A new prolinamide derivative anchored to a polystyrene support has been straightforwardly prepared and employed as heterogeneous catalyst in the direct asymmetric aldol reaction with good results in terms of yield and stereoselectivity. The optimal reaction conditions were found when a 1:2 (v/v) water/chloroform mixture was used. This mixture was the best compromise between the good swelling properties of chloroform and the formation of a concentrated organic phase due to the presence of water. Noticeably, the enantioselectivities obtained employing acetone as ketone were, to the best of our knowledge, the highest achieved with a supported proline derivative. This catalyst can be easily rec…

Polystyrene-supported proline as recyclable catalyst in the Baylis–Hillman reaction of arylaldehydes and methyl or ethyl vinyl ketone

2008

Abstract Polystyrene-supported proline has been used as co-organocatalyst (10 mol%) with imidazole (10 mol%) in the Baylis–Hillman reaction between methyl or ethyl vinyl ketone and arylaldehydes. Recycling studies showed that the proline resin can be used up to five cycles with high isolated yields. This study represents the first example of supported proline as heterogeneous catalyst in the above reaction and broaden the scope of this catalytic material.

The effect of free polymer on the interactions and the glass transition dynamics of microgel colloids.

2002

By studying the phase behaviour and the short range order of polystyrene microgel colloids in a good solvent we demonstrated that these particles can be considered as hard spheres or nearly hard spheres if the internal cross link density is made sufficiently high. A binary mixture of 1:50 crosslinked (1 crosslink per 50 monomers) particles with a size ratio R(small)/R(large) = 0.83 and a number ratio N(small)/N(large) = 2.7 was characterized with respect to the short range order and glass transition dynamics. We found that this mixture can be mapped onto a one-component hard sphere system with an effective polydispersity of 11%, even though for the particle interactions an inverse power pot…

The effect of free polymer on the glass transition dynamics of microgel colloids

2002

Abstract From the phase behavior we establish that 1:10 crosslinked polystyrene microgel colloids in a good solvent can be considered as hard spheres whereas 1:50 crosslinked particles are slightly softer. Nevertheless, the glass transition dynamics of 1:10 microgels and a binary mixtures of 1:50 microgels can be described in both cases within the mode coupling theory for hard spheres. The only difference is that the increase of the polydispersity from about 7% to about 13% when going from the one-component system to the mixture is accompanied by a shift of the glass transition from ϕ g ≈0.56 to ϕ g ≈0.595. On addition of linear polystyrene to the 1:50 binary mixture we find a tremendous ac…

Spherical and rod-like colloids with polymer-brush surfaces

2008

In this paper, we describe a strategy to overcome incompatibility of colloidal particles and polymer coils as well as immiscibility of spherical and rod-shaped nanoparticles. Two new types of model colloids are presented, colloidal nanospheres with hairy surfaces (spherical brushes) and polymacromonomers to represent cylindrical brushes. The spherical brushes are synthesized from polyorganosiloxane-μ-gels of diameter 20 nm by grafting onto anionically prepared polystyrene macromonomers of molecular weight M w=5000 g/mol. On average, each sphere has a surface layer of 200 polymer chains. Compatibility of spherical nanoparticles with polymer coils was probed by turbidity of as-cast films as w…

Activity of Antimicrobial Silver Polystyrene Nanocomposites.

2012

A simple technique based on doping polymers within situgenerated silver nanoparticles (Ag/PS films) has been developed. In particular, an antiseptic material has been prepared by dissolving silver 1,5-cyclooctadiene-hexafluoroacetylacetonate in amorphous polystyrene, and the obtained solid solution has been heated for ca. 10 s at a convenient temperature (180°C). Under such conditions the metal precursor decomposes producing silver atoms that diffuse into the polymer and clusterize. The antimicrobial characteristics of the resulting polystyrene-based material have been accurately evaluated towardEscherichia coli (E. coli)comparing the cytotoxicity effect of 10 wt.% and 30 wt.% (drastic and …

Luminescent and Magnetoresponsive Multifunctional Chalcogenide/Polymer Hybrid Nanoparticles

2013

Cadmium sulfide/magnetite/polymer multifunctional hybrid nanoparticles are prepared by crystallizing CdS in a controlled manner on the surface of phosphonate-functionalized polystyrene particles with a magnetic core. The supporting polymer magnetoresponsive nanoparticles are produced by a modified miniemulsion polymerization process: a first miniemulsion containing the core monomer (styrene) and a phosphonate-functionalized surface-active monomer is mixed with a second miniemulsion containing magnetite nanoparticles capped with oleic acid and the same surface-active monomer. The chalcogenide formation occurs in situ at the surface of the polymer particles by adding a precipitating agent (so…

Polymer induced changes of the crystallization scenario in suspensions of hard sphere like microgel particles

2012

We investigated the crystallization scenario of highly cross linked polystyrene particles dispersed in the good solvent 2-ethylnaphtalene and their mixtures with non-adsorbing low molecular weight polysterene polymer using time resolved static light scattering. The samples were prepared slightly below the melting volume fraction of the polymer free system. For the polymer free samples, we obtained polycrystalline solids via crystallization scenario known from hard sphere suspensions with little competition of wall crystal formation. Addition of non-adsorbing low molecular weight polystyrene polymer leads to a considerably slowing down of the bulk crystallization kinetics. We observed a dela…

Living Anionic Polymerization in Continuous Flow: Facilitated Synthesis of High-Molecular Weight Poly(2-vinylpyridine) and Polystyrene

2014

We describe the living anionic polymerization of 2-vinylpyridine (2VP) and styrene (S) in continuous flow, comparing two micromixing devices with different mixing principles. The use of a continuous flow setup reduces the experimental effort for living anionic polymerizations significantly, compared to a conventional batch system. By adjusting the ratio of the flow rates of the monomer and initiator solutions a variety of different molecular weights can be rapidly synthesized within several minutes, using one setup. Additionally, a comparison of the influence of the two different mixing devices—an interdigital micromixer (SIMM-V2) leading to laminar mixing and a tangential four-way jet mixi…

Relationship between structure and electroluminescence of oligo(p-phenylenevinylene)s

1998

The preparation of LEDs with poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) as emitting material is well established, However, due to the presence of a distribution of conjugated chain lengths in the polymer, systematic investigations of the electroluminescence with polymeric materials are difficult, as far as the optical emission is concerned. We are studying the relationship between structural variation of substituted oligo(p-phenylenevinylene)s and their electroluminescent behaviour using a series of distyrylbenzenes with a variety of substituents in order to investigate their influence on the electroluminescence (EL). Furthermore, we synthesized a homologous series of monodisperse oligo(2,5-dipropoxy-…
