Comparison of an indirect format ELISA on modified graphite and polystyrene surfaces against triazines.
2006
An indirect format enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay (ELISA) on graphite rods (Ø 0.8 mm x 20 mm) and, for comparison, on microtiter plates has been developed against terbuthylazine. For this purpose, a series of 2-aminoalkyl-4-chloro-6-terbuthyl-s-triazine-2,6- diamine ELISA haptens with alkyl spacer lengths of 2, 4, 6, and 8 CH2 groups has been synthesized. The graphite rods or the microtiter plates were covered by a polymerized glutaraldehyde network, and the ELISA haptens have been coupled by imino coupling to the free aldehyde groups of that network. ε-Aminocaproic acid has been used as an agent to block unspecific binding sites. The ELISA was run in a competitive mode, where the immob…
Intrinsic viscosities of polyelectrolytes: specific salt effects and viscometric master curves.
2013
Dilute solutions of the sodium salt of polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSS-Na) were measured viscometrically as a function of composition in aqueous solvents of different salinity, where the extra salt was either NaCl or CaCl2. Such experiments yield {η}, the generalized intrinsic viscosities (hydrodynamic specific volume) of the polyelectrolyte for arbitrary polymer concentrations, c. In the limit of infinite dilution {η} becomes identical to the intrinsic viscosity [η]. For NaCl {η} decreases monotonously with rising c, whereas maxima are passed in the case of CaCl2. Condensing c and the concentration of extra salt in the mixed solvent into a single variable enables the establishment of predic…
Interpolymer complexes and polymer compatibility.
2012
A reliable method to decide whether two polymers A and B are miscible or incompatible would be very helpful in many ways. In this contribution we demonstrate why traditional procedures cannot work. We propose to use the intrinsic viscosities [η] of the polymer blends instead of the composition dependence of the viscosities as a criterion for polymer miscibility. Two macromolecules A and B are miscible because of sufficiently favorable interactions between the two types of polymer segments. For solutions of these polymers in a joint solvent, this Gibbs energetic preference of dissimilar intersegmental contacts should prevail upon dilution and lead to the formation of interpolymer complexes, …
Stimuli-Responsive Y-Shaped Polymer Brushes Based on Junction-Point-Reactive Block Copolymers
2012
Reversibly responsive, thin or ultrathin polymer fi lms, often referred to as “smart surfaces”, can alter their properties upon application of external stimuli. [ 1 , 2 ] One particular application fi eld represents the engineering of nanostructured fi lms mimicking cell membranes. [ 3 , 4 ] Such materials offer application potential for sensors, textiles, construction materials, and smart coatings due to a rapid change in surface energy and morphology. [ 5–7 ] The surface response can be triggered by various external stimuli such as light, temperature, electrical potential, mechanical force, magnetic fi eld, pH change, or selective solvent treatment. [ 1 , 8–12 ] A variety of different thi…
Surface-Functionalized Latex Particles as Controlling Agents for the Mineralization of Zinc Oxide in Aqueous Medium
2005
Polystyrene latex particles modified at the surface with different hydrophilic functional groups were prepared by miniemulsion polymerization and used as controlling agents in the crystallization of zinc oxide from aqueous medium. The effects of the chemical nature of the surface functionalization and the latex concentration on the crystal growth, morphology, and crystalline structure of the resulting zinc oxide were analyzed. Micro- and submicrosized crystals with a broad variety of morphologies depending on the functionalization were obtained. Among the different latexes studied, the acrylic-acid-derived particles were shown to be a convenient system for further quantitative investigation…
Sensitivity to acetic acid, ability to colonize abiotic surfaces and virulence potential of Listeria monocytogenes EGD-e after incubation on parsley …
2010
International audience; Abstract Aim: To investigate how the survival of Listeria monocytogenes on parsley leaves may affect its ability to sustain process-related harsh conditions and its virulence. Methods and Results: Parsley seedlings were spot inoculated with stationary phase cells of L. monocytogenes EGD-e and incubated for 15 days. Each day, bacterial cells were harvested and enumerated, and their ability to survive acetic acid challenge (90 min, pH 4.0), to colonize abiotic surfaces and to grow as biofilms was assessed. After a 3-log decrease over the first 48 h, the population stabilized to about 10(6) CFU g(-1) until the sixth day. After the sixth day, L. monocytogenes was no long…
Enhanced Heterogeneous Catalytic Conversion of Furfuryl Alcohol into Butyl Levulinate
2014
We study the catalytic condensation of furfuryl alcohol with 1-butanol to butyl levulinate. A screening of several commercial and as-synthesized solid acid catalysts shows that propylsulfonic acid-functionalized mesoporous silica outperforms the state-of-the-art phosphotungstate acid catalysts. The catalyst is prepared via template-assisted sol-gel polycondensation of TEOS and MPTMS. It gives 96 % yield (and 100 % selectivity) of butyl levulinate in 4h at 110 °C. Reaction profiles before and after a hot filtration test confirm that the active catalytic species do not leach into the solution. The catalyst synthesis, characterization, and mode of operation are presented and discussed. Sour ca…
Evaluation of the concept of heterology in a monoclonal antibody-based ELISA utilizing direct hapten linkage to polystyrene microtiter plates.
2005
A series of new heterologous haptens has been synthesized and used as coating haptens in an antigen-immobilized immunoassay with a monoclonal antibody against atrazine. Coating was achieved by covalently linking the different haptens to a glutaraldehyde network directly bound to the polystyrene surface of a standard 96-well microtiter plate. With the assay designed in the antigen-immobilized format with direct chemical linkage of the hapten to the solid polystyrene surface well-defined hapten densities were achieved in all experiments. The results of different experiments with different coating haptens were comparable. Using different heterologous haptens it appears that the concept of hete…
