From single fiber to macro-level mechanics: A structural finite-element model for elastomeric fibrous biomaterials

2014

In the present work, we demonstrate that the mesoscopic in-plane mechanical behavior of membrane elastomeric scaffolds can be simulated by replication of actual quantified fibrous geometries. Elastomeric electrospun polyurethane (ES-PEUU) scaffolds, with and without particulate inclusions, were utilized. Simulations were developed from experimentally-derived fiber network geometries, based on a range of scaffold isotropic and anisotropic behaviors. These were chosen to evaluate the effects on macro-mechanics based on measurable geometric parameters such as fiber intersections, connectivity, orientation, and diameter. Simulations were conducted with only the fiber material model parameters a…

Characterization of the complete fiber network topology of planar fibrous tissues and scaffolds

2010

Understanding how engineered tissue scaffold architecture affects cell morphology, metabolism, phenotypic expression, as well as predicting material mechanical behavior has recently received increased attention. In the present study, an image-based analysis approach that provides an automated tool to characterize engineered tissue fiber network topology is presented. Micro-architectural features that fully defined fiber network topology were detected and quantified, which include fiber orientation, connectivity, intersection spatial density, and diameter. Algorithm performance was tested using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of electrospun poly(ester urethane)urea (ES-PEUU) scaffo…

Development of stimulus-sensitive electrospun membranes based on novel biodegradable segmented polyurethane as triggered delivery system for doxorubi…

2022

In this work, redox-sensitive polyurethane urea (PUU) based electrospun membranes have been exploited to chemically tether a pH-sensitive doxorubicin derivative achieved by linking a lipoyl hydrazide to the drug via a hydrazone linkage. First, the lipoyl-hydrazone-doxorubicin derivative labelled as LA-Hy-Doxo has been syn- thesized and characterized. Then, the molecule has been tethered, via a thiol-disulfide exchange reaction, to the redox-sensitive PUU (PolyCEGS) electrospun membrane. The redox-sensitive PolyCEGS PUU has been produced by using PCL-PEG-PCL polyol and glutathione-tetramethyl ester (GSSG-OMe)4 as a chain extender. The LA-Hy- Doxo tethered electrospun membrane has showed a du…

Identification and Evaluation of Hazardous Pyrolysates in Bio-Based Rigid Polyurethane-Polyisocyanurate Foam Smoke

2021

In this study, rigid polyurethane (PU) and polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam samples made from renewable material (tall oil fatty acid) based polyols were analyzed by pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) to obtain information about the full relative smoke content, with a focus on substance identification by their functional groups and hazardousness. The relative content of gaseous products produced during the thermal degradation was evaluated between the two samples, differenced by their assigned isocyanate (NCO) index value—150 and 300. The main thermal degradation components of the rigid PU-PIR foam were found to originate from the decomposition of isocyanate, primarily for…

Synthesis of molecularly uniform model oligomers for 1,5-naphthalene diisocyanate and 1,4-butanediol based polyurethanes by using the 3,5-di-tert-but…

1997

A modified benzyloxycarbonyl (BOC) protective group, the 3,5-di-tert-butyl substituted BOC (3,5-tBBOC) group, was introduced to the stepwise synthesis of molecularly uniform oligourethanes based on 1,5-naphthalene diisocyanate (NDI) and 1,4-butanediol (BDO) for the protection of the amino functions of the starting material 1,5-naphthalene-diamine (NDA). The tert-butyl substituents of the 3,5-tBBOC group significantly improved the solubility of the intermediate products in the oligourethane synthesis. Thus, applying this modified protective group, reactions could be carried out, which were not possible with the conventional BOC group, due to the insolubility of the compounds in all suitable …

MCM-41 silica effect on gel polymer electrolytes based on thermoplastic polyurethane

2012

Abstract Polymer electrolytes were prepared from thermoplastic polyurethane with addition of mixture of N-ethyl(methylether)-N-methylpyrrolidinium trifluoromethanesulfonimide (PYRA12O1TFSI) ionic liquid, lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfoneimide) salt and propylene carbonate. MCM-41 mesoporous silica was added in proportions ranging from 5 to 20 wt.% with respect to TPU. The electrolytes were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, linear voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy. The MCM-41 addition to the system was found to improve the electrochemical stability of the membranes and to reduce the gel electrolyte/metallic Li interfacial resistance. The f…

Use of new hydroxytelechelic cis-1,4-polyisoprene (HTPI) in the synthesis of polyurethanes (PUs): Influence of isocyanate and chain extender naturean…

2006

AbstractNew segmented polyurethanes (thermoplastic-elastomers) based on previously described hydroxytelechelic cis-1,4-polyisoprene (HTPI), miscellaneous isocyanates and chain extenders at various equivalent ratios were prepared by the classical one-shot method. The influence of the nature of isocyanate and chain extender, as well as their equivalent ratios, on the mechanical and thermal materials behavior was investigated. Thus, a comparative assessment of material properties was performed. Microphase separation of hard and soft segments was observed by DMTA, DSC and AFM. Moreover, according to Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), linear relationships depending on the isocyanate and chain ext…

Testing Soil Encasing Materials for Measuring Hydraulic Conductivity of a Sandy-Loam Soil by the Cube Methods

2008

The Cube Method (CM) and the Modified Cube Method (MCM) were developed for measuring vertical (K v ) and horizontal (K h ) saturated hydraulic conductivity of a single soil sample. By these methods, a cube of soil is carved out in situ and a suitable material is applied to enclose the cube in a tightly fitting casing before moving the sample to the laboratory. Problems may be associated with the use of gypsum, originally used to encase soil. The suitability of molten wax and expandable polyurethane foam to encase a soil cube was tested for a sandy-loam soil. Wax-treated samples yielded lower conductivity results than untreated samples by a maximum factor of 3.7. The observed discrepancies w…

Polyurethane and Polyisocyanurate Foams in External Tank Cryogenic Insulation

2013

External tanks of the spacecrafts need not only efficient, but also safe cryogenic insulation materials and the issues of their development are still urgent. At present, polyurethane (PUR) or polyisocyanurate (PIR) foams’ cryogenic insulation is widely applied in the partially reusable launch systems. Factors influencing the cryogenic resistance of external thermal insulation performed of spray-on PUR or PIR foams are characterised based on a wide literature search. They include chemical structure and macromolecules’ architecture of polymeric matrix, physical and mechanical properties of foams, thermal stability and combustibility, cellular structure of foams etc. Experimental data on physi…
