Recensione: M.A. VISCEGLIA, Morte e elezione del papa. Norme, riti e conflitti. L’età moderna
2016
Medullary respiratory-related neurons with axonal connections to rostral pons and their function in termination of inspiration.
1985
In urethane-anaesthetized, paralyzed and artificially ventilated rabbits, medullary respiration-related neurons (RRU) were classified according to the phase relation of their burst discharge to phrenic nerve activity. Phase-bound inspiratory (I) or expiratory (E) neurons were discriminated from phase-spanning expiratory-inspiratory (EI) or inspiratory-expiratory (IE) units. Mechanisms of termination of inspiration by electrical stimulation of rostral pontine nuclei (Nc. parabrachialis medialis; Lc. coeruleus) were examined firstly to demonstrate whether RRU receive descending excitatory and inhibitory afferents as well as ascending efferents and secondly to analyse the time course of the ne…

15. Functional mapping of monaural auditory brainstem responses
2012
Background and aims: The pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) is a new deep brain stimulation (DBS) target, thought to be particularly for useful in ameliorating gait disturbance in Parkinson’s disease. Recent evidence shows a prominent theta (4–7 Hz) rhythm in the PPN (Tsang et al., Neurology, 2010; Simon et al., J. Neurophysiol., 2010; Shimamoto et al., JNNP, 2010). Given that theta activity is modulated by vestibular signals elsewhere in the brain, e.g. hippocampus, (Shin, Synapse, 2010; Chen et al., Neuroimage, 2010), we assessed whether vestibular signals modulate PPN theta activity. Methods: We recorded local field potentials (LFPs) in three patients with implanted bilateral subthalamic nuc…
I ponti in Sicilia fra tradizione e innovazione (XVIII-XIX secolo)
2014
I ponti, c…
Long-term response of osteogenic cells on micron and submicron-scale-structured hydrophilic titanium surfaces: sequence of cell proliferation and cel…
2010
Objective: Modifications of surface topography and surface chemistry are key factors for guiding target cells during dental implant healing. Recent in vitro studies confirmed promotion of early osteogenic cell differentiation on submicron scaled surfaces in particular when hydrophilized. However, no long-term observations on both osteogenic cell proliferation as well as on cell maturation have been reported for respectively modified surfaces. Aim of this study was to monitor osteogenic cell proliferation and expression of specific osteogenic cell differentiation markers on a protein level over an extended period of 3 weeks with respect to surface modifications. Material and methods: Modifie…
Endothelial cells stimulate osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells on calcium phosphate scaffolds
2012
The interaction of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with endothelium in vivo is significant for regenerative processes in organisms. To design concepts for tissue engineering for bone regeneration based on this interaction, the osteogenic differentiation of human bone marrow-derived MSCs in a co-culture with human dermal microvascular endothelial cells (HDMECs) was studied. The experiments were focussed on the regulation of MSCs in a co-culture with HDMECs on different calcium phosphate scaffolds. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and mRNA expression of various osteogenic markers increased significantly when cells were co-cultured on materials with calcium phosphate scaffolds compared to tis…
Correlation between osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease
2014
Several evidences have shown in the last years a possible correlation between cardiovascular diseases and osteoporosis. Patients affected with osteoporosis, for example, have a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases than subjects with normal bone mass. However, the heterogeneous approaches and the different populations that have been studied so far have limited the strength of the findings. Studies conducted in animal models show that vascular calcification is a very complex mechanism that involves similar pathways described in the normal bone calcification. Proteins like BMP, osteopontin, osteoprotegerin play an important role at the bone level but are also highly expressed in the calcifie…
