Toponymic politics and the role of heritagisation in multiethnic cities in Romania

2022

Although scholars have made considerable progress in understanding the dynamics of heritagisation and toponymic politics, research is yet to explore how these may interact with each other. Drawing on a mixed-methods comparative qualitative study, this paper explores the politics of place naming and multilingualism in the context of heritagisation in three multiethnic cities in Romania: Târgu Mureş, Oradea and Baia Mare. We argue that the recent trends of heritagisation introduce a new element in the politics of place naming in ethnically diverse cities. Heritage becomes inclusive when it loses its importance in the power struggle between minority and majority political representatives. Once…

Phytotoponymy and Synphytotoponymy in Western Granada Province (Andalusia, Spain)

2009

2016

The initial part of the article presents a brief history of Czech people in Polish Zelów as well as characteristics of this group of residents. The main part concerns description of names of descendants of Czech residents of Zelów. Material for analysis comes from tombstone inscriptions of the cemetery of the Evangelical-Reformed parish in Zelów. Authoress emphasizes that on the one hand anthroponyms reflect history, culture, and realities of life and on the other hand contacts with other nations. In this regard, she indicates those elements that attest to Czech continuum and characteristics of the phenomenon of linguistic and cultural assimilation of this group of Zelów’s residents.

Dundaga parish oronyms (hill names) of Livonian origin in Juris Plāķis’ Latvian toponym publication

2014

Each less known addition to the collection of authentic Livonian language materials is very valuable, and a small contribution can also be made by Juris Plāķis’ publication about Latvian, i.e., Courland toponyms, among which Livonian ones can be found as well. This collection includes toponyms collected by J. Plāķis himself, toponyms from Augusts Bīlenšteins’ onomastic materials, as well as toponyms which have been sent in to the Folklore depository by pupils from different parishes. Medical English in Italian University Courses in Sports Sciences: Some Issues in Focus

2014

Over the last few decades, the increasingly rapid progress of medical science and technology, together with the growing importance of English as the language of international communication, has made the study of medical English a crucial segment in the curriculum of medical undergraduates. In Italy, medical topics are studied not only in medical degree courses but also in those of sports sciences. This paper focuses attention on some medical English-related issues in sports sciences degree courses in Italian universities. More precisely, the work is divided into four main parts. The first part raises the terminological question concerning the denomination of the discipline “lingua inglese”/…

Sequencing toponymic change: A quantitative longitudinal analysis of street renaming in Sibiu, Romania.

2021

Recent scholarship in critical toponymy studies has refashioned the understanding of street names from innocent labels to nominal loci of historical memory and vectors of collective identity that are embroiled with power relations. Urban nomenclatures consist of more than mere linguistic signposts deployed onto space to facilitate navigation. Street names are also powerful signposts that indicate the political regime and its socio-cultural values. Drawing on these theoretical insights, this paper is focused on Sibiu (Romania) and explore the city’s shifting namescape in a longitudinal perspective spanning one century and a half of modern history (1875–2020). The analysis is based on a compl…

Mapping the political toponymy of educational namescapes: A quantitative analysis of Romanian school names

2019

Abstract This study sets out to map the political toponymy of Romanian schooling network. Starting from the theoretical premise that national memory is toponymically inscribed, inter alia, on a series of public organizations that form an institutional namescape, the paper reads the Romanian historical memory through the looking glass of school names. Exhaustive data was collected for the Romanian secondary schools bearing a nominal identity (N = 2850). Data were analyzed in terms of the ethnic and gender distribution, the social (occupational), spatial, and historical structures of the Romanian educational namescape. Our findings reveal that the political toponymy of the Romanian schooling …
