Recognition and characterization of small colonic neoplasia with high-definition colonoscopy using i-Scan is as precise as chromoendoscopy

2010

Abstract Background The EPKi system (Pentax, Japan) enables resolution above HDTV. Aim of the study was to test the efficacy of HD+ alone and with the new post-processing digital filter i-Scan or chromoendoscopy (Methylene blue 0.1%) in screening for colorectal cancer. We focused on lesions less than 5 mm as a surrogate marker for the optical possibilities of the EPKi system. Methods The last 30 cm of the colon in a screening population were inspected with HD+ alone, in combination with i-Scan (2:1 randomisation) and subsequently with chromoendoscopy. All lesions were characterized and targeted biopsies were performed. Results i-Scan augmented in 69 patients the identification of lesions fr…

Osteoporosis, densidad mineral ósea y complejo CKD-MBD (II): implicaciones terapéuticas

2019

Right/Left Ventricular Blood Pool T2 Ratio as an Innovative Cardiac MRI Screening Tool for the Identification of Left‐to‐Right Shunts in Patients Wit…

2021

Background Left-to-right (L-R) shunts are characterized by a pathological connection between high- and low-pressure systems, leading to a mixing of oxygen-rich blood with low oxygenated blood. They are typically diagnosed by phase-contrast cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) which requires extensive planning. T2 is sensitive to blood oxygenation and may be able to detect oxygenation differences between the left (LV) and right ventricles (RV) caused by L-R shunts. Purpose To test the feasibility of routine T2 mapping to detect L-R shunts. Study type Retrospective. Population Patients with known L-R shunts (N = 27), patients with RV disease without L-R shunts (N = 21), and healthy volunt…

Bortezomib Retreatment in Relapsed Multiple Myeloma (MM): Results from a Binational, Multicenter Retrospective Survey

2008

Abstract In myeloma therapy retreatment after successful therapy is frequently considered. Here we present pooled data from a German and Swiss multicenter, retrospective survey (26866138MMY4014). The survey started in Germany and was later extended to Switzerland. German data have already been published before. Here we report on the entire cohort of patients for the first time. For inclusion into this analysis, patients with MM had to have had preceding bortezomib treatment, resulting in at least partial remission and a second therapy with Bortezomib on relapse. The intention of this trial was to provide further evidence of the value of a retreatment with bortezomib, description of predispo…

Capecitabine and cisplatin with or without cetuximab for patients with previously untreated advanced gastric cancer (EXPAND): a randomised, open-labe…

2013

Summary Background Patients with advanced gastric cancer have a poor prognosis and few efficacious treatment options. We aimed to assess the addition of cetuximab to capecitabine-cisplatin chemotherapy in patients with advanced gastric or gastro-oesophageal junction cancer. Methods In our open-label, randomised phase 3 trial (EXPAND), we enrolled adults aged 18 years or older with histologically confirmed locally advanced unresectable (M0) or metastatic (M1) adenocarcinoma of the stomach or gastro-oesophageal junction. We enrolled patients at 164 sites (teaching hospitals and clinics) in 25 countries, and randomly assigned eligible participants (1:1) to receive first-line chemotherapy with …

Physical activity predicts population-level age-related differences in frontal white matter

2018

AbstractPhysical activity has positive effects on brain health and cognitive function throughout the lifespan. Thus far, few studies have examined the effects of physical activity on white matter (WM) microstructure and psychomotor speed within the same, population-based sample (critical if conclusions are to extend to the wider population). Here, using diffusion tensor imaging and a simple reaction time task within a relatively large population-derived sample (N = 399; 18–87 years) from the Cambridge Centre for Ageing and Neuroscience (Cam-CAN), we demonstrate that physical activity mediates the effect of age on white matter integrity, measured with fractional anisotropy. Higher self-repor…

2018

Background: Change in the prevalence of raised blood pressure could be due to both shifts in the entire distribution of blood pressure (representing the combined effects of public health interventions and secular trends) and changes in its high-blood-pressure tail (representing successful clinical interventions to control blood pressure in the hypertensive population). Our aim was to quantify the contributions of these two phenomena to the worldwide trends in the prevalence of raised blood pressure. Methods: We pooled 1018 population-based studies with blood pressure measurements on 88.6 million participants from 1985 to 2016. We first calculated mean systolic blood pressure (SBP), mean dia…

A Positive Technology System for the Promotion of Well-Being: From the Lab to the Hospital Setting

2016

There is growing evidence of the effectiveness of Positive Psychology Interventions (PPIs) to enhance subjective and psychological well-being in different populations, and the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are becoming into a key help to increase the efficiency of this type of interventions. Recently, the use of technology to foster well-being and personal growth has been named as Positive Technology. The aim of this paper is to describe and to present data about a positive technology example (EARTH of Well-being system) and to examine its usefulness in different populations and settings. Data of four studies are presented: two with non-clinical population (university st…

SEX DIFFERENCES IN THE PATTERN OF CYTOCHROMES P-450 IN RAT LIVER MICROSOMES

1977

ABSTRACT A number of sex differences in the spectral and enzymic properties of rat liver microsomes have been observed which may reflect differences in the population of hepatic cytochromes P 450 of male and female rats: 1. a blue shift in the spectrum of the reduced P 450-CO complex in females as compared to males, 2. lower ΔA max values in the binding of metyrapone to reduced microsomes in females as compared to males, 3. a higher proportion of 2-hydroxylation in the metabolism of biphenyl in females as compared to males, 4. preferential inhibition of ethoxycoumarin deethylation, benzpyrene hydroxylation and biphenyl-4-hydroxylation by α-naphthoflavone in females but by metyrapone in male…
