Laparoscopic Management of External Iliac Artery Injury Using Yasargil Clamps and Intracorporeal Suture

2011

Presented is a case report of laparoscopic repair of an external iliac artery injury using titanium Yasargil clamps and intracorporeal suture during lymphadenectomy. Yasargil clamps were introduced and placed, 1 distal and 1 proximal to the lesion. The vascular injury site was identified and repaired using intracorporeal sutures. Laparoscopic staging was completed successfully. No sign of thrombosis or vascular occlusion was detected. The patient was discharged on postoperative day 4 to receive adjuvant therapy. Laparotomy is the accepted way of managing major vascular injuries during laparoscopy. However, in controlled circumstances, with availability of Yasargil clamps and a surgeon exper…

Screening of pharmacologic adulterant classes in herbal formulations using voltammetry of microparticles.

2013

A solid state electrochemical method for screening different families of adulterant chemicals illegally added to commercial phytotherapuetic formulations is described. The proposed method, based on the voltammetry of microparticles approach, permits a fast and sensitive way to distinguish between anorexics (amfepramone, fenproporex, sibutramine), benzozodiazepinic anxiolytics (clonazepam, flurazepam, alprazolam, midazolam, medazepam, chlordiazepoxide, diazepam), antidepressants (bupropione, fluoxetine, sertraline, paroxetine), diuretics (hydrochlorothiazide, furosemide, chlortalidone, amiloride, spironolactone), and hypoglycemics (glimepiride, chlorpropamide, glibenclamide) based on charact…

Fumigation of Brazil nuts with allyl isothiocyanate to inhibit the growth of Aspergillus parasiticus and aflatoxin production

2017

Abstract BACKGROUND Brazil produces approximately 40 000 tons of Brazil nuts annually, which is commonly contaminated with fungi and mycotoxins. Gaseous allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) was used to inhibit the growth of Aspergillus parasiticus and its production of aflatoxins (AFs) in Brazil nuts. RESULTS Nuts were inoculated with 104 spores g−1 of A. parasiticus and placed in airtight glass jars with controlled relative humidity (RH = 95 or 85%). Samples were treated with 0, 0.5, 1.0 or 2.5 µL L−1 of gaseous AITC and analyzed after 30 days to determine the fungal population and AFs content. Samples were also submitted to sensory evaluation. AITC at 2.5 µL L−1 could completely inhibit the fungal…

Sediment quality assessment using Gmelinoides fasciatus and Monoporeia affinis (Amphipoda, Gammaridea) in the northeastern Baltic Sea

2013

Crustaceans in the order Amphipoda are sensitive organisms for the assessment of sediment quality. In this work we performed 10-day toxicity tests on muddy sediments collected from a total of 29 sites in the Gulf of Finland, the Gulf of Riga and the Gulf of Bothnia (northeastern Baltic Sea) using Baltic Sea species such as the native amphipod Monoporeia affinis (Bousfield, 1989) and the invasive amphipod Gmelinoides fasciatus (Stebbing, 1899), and also compared these results with those of bioassays carried out using the standard test species, laboratory-cultivated amphipod Hyalella azteca (Saussure, 1858). The sediment samples (three cm of the upper layer) were collected by a GEMAX Dual Cor…

Detection of Amyloid-β Fibrils Using Track-Etched Nanopores: Effect of Geometry and Crowding

2021

Several neurodegenerative diseases have been linked to proteins or peptides that are prone to aggregate in different brain regions. Aggregation of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides is recognized as the main cause of Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression, leading to the formation of toxic Aβ oligomers and amyloid fibrils. The molecular mechanism of Aβ aggregation is complex and still not fully understood. Nanopore technology provides a new way to obtain kinetic and morphological aspects of Aβ aggregation at a single-molecule scale without labeling by detecting the electrochemical signal of the peptides when they pass through the hole. Here, we investigate the influence of nanoscale geometry (conical an…

ANALGESIC EFFECT OF EXTRACORPOREAL SHOCK-WAVE THERAPY ON CHRONIC TENNIS ELBOW

1996

We report a controlled, prospective study to investigate the effect of treatment by low-energy extracorporeal shock waves on pain in tennis elbow. We assigned at random 100 patients who had had symptoms for more than 12 months to two groups to receive low-energy shock-wave therapy. Group I received a total of 3000 impulses of 0.08 mJ/mm2 and group II, the control group, 30 impulses. The patients were reviewed after 3, 6 and 24 weeks. There was significant alleviation of pain and improvement of function after treatment in group I in which there was a good or excellent outcome in 48% and an acceptable result in 42% at the final review, compared with 6% and 24%, respectively, in group II.

Real-time 3D movements analysis for a medical device intended for maintaining functional independence in aged adults at home

2016

We propose in this manuscript a realtime3D movement analysis system for inhomefunctionalabilities assessment in aged adults. As a first step, the purpose is to maintain the functionalindependence of this population and to allow an earlier detection of a motor decompensation inorder to facilitate a rehabilitation process. To quantify the equilibrium quality of a subject, webuilt a system using the Kinect sensor in order to analyze a simple clinical test validated in geriatricrehabilitation: the Timed Up and Go (TUG). Three experiments conducted in heterogeneousenvironments (laboratory, day hospital and home) showed good measurement reliability of theidentified parameters. In particular, they…

A new 8-oxo-7,8-2 ' deoxyguanosine nanoporous anodic alumina aptasensor for colorectal cancer diagnosis in blood and urine

2021

Many important human diseases, and especially cancer, have been related to the overproduction of 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2 '-deoxyguanosine (8-oxo-dG). This molecule is a product of oxidative stress processes over nucleophilic bases in DNA. In this work, an aptasensor for the rapid, selective and accurate detection of this oncomarker is presented. The aptasensor consists of a nanoporous anodic alumina material loaded with a dye and is functionalized with an aptamer-based "molecular gate". In the presence of target 8-oxo-dG, the capping aptamer displaces from the surface due to the high affinity of the analyte with the capping aptamer, thus inducing delivery of the preloaded fluorescent dye. In co…

Characterization of porous alumina membranes for efficient, real-time, flow through biosensing

2015

Abstract Nanofluidic sensing devices promise high performance by overcoming issues of mass transport of analyte molecules to the sensing surface, whilst micro-porous membranes promise high sensitivity due to a large surface for their capture. Anodic alumina (AAO) filter membranes allow the flow through of samples, and could be used as a convenient and readily available fluidic platform for the targeted delivering of analytes to bioreceptors immobilized on the pore walls. The relatively small pore dimensions, compared to fluidic diffusion lengths, promise highly efficient capture of analytes from the whole sample volume, enabling relatively fast sensing response times and the use of small sa…

Martyrdom in Contemporary Animalist Discourses

2019

Is it possible to use the notion of martyrdom in order to explain the communicative strategies and the semiotic mechanisms of the animalist movement? Is the animal a sort of contemporary martyr? This study aims to apply the notion of martyrdom outside the traditional boundaries of religion and politics, testing it in another relevant socio–cultural phenomenon: the contemporary animalist discourse. This paper analyses texts from animalist advertising, essays and novels promoting animal rights and vegetarianism. The main features of the traditional notion of martyrdom are compared to the semiotic structures of the animalist discourse. The questions of the efficacy of images and that of the ex…
