Intrusion of nonwetting liquid in paper

The saturation curve of a sample of paper board was measured with mercury-intrusion porosimetry, and the three-dimensional structure of its pore space was determined by x-ray tomographic imaging. Ab initio numerical simulation of intrusion on the tomographic reconstruction, based on the lattice-Boltzmann method, was in excellent agreement with the measured saturation curve. CEC column behaviour of butyl and lauryl methacrylate monoliths prepared in non-aqueous media

Polymeric monolithic stationary phases for capillary electrochromatography were prepared using two bulk monomers, butyl methacrylate (BMA) and lauryl methacrylate (LMA), by in situ polymerization in non-aqueous media. The effect of 1,4-butanediol/1-propanol ratio on porous properties was investigated separately for each monomer, keeping the proportion of monomers to pore-forming solvents fixed at 40:60 wt:wt. Also, mixtures of BMA and LMA at different 1,4-butanediol/1-propanol ratios were studied for tailoring the morphological features of the monolithic columns. Theory of mercury intrusion in a distribution of unconnected wedge-shaped slits

Effective mercury intrusion in a wedge-shaped slit is gradual, the intruded depth increasing with applied pressure. The Washburn equation must be modified accordingly. It relates the distance, e, separating the three-phase contact lines on the wedge faces to the hydrostatic pressure, P, wedge half-opening angle alpha, mercury surface tension gamma, and contact angle theta: e=(-2gamma/P)cos(theta-alpha) if theta-alpha>pi2. Polyaminocyclodextrin nanosponges: synthesis, characterization and pH-responsive sequestration abilities

New pH-responsive nanosponges were obtained by reacting four different polyaminocyclodextrins with heptakis-(6-bromo)-(6-deoxy)-β-cyclodextrin. The materials obtained were characterized by various techniques (FT-IR, potentiometric titration, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), porosimetry (BET), 13C{1H} CP-MAS NMR). Their adsorption abilities at different pH values were verified towards a suitable set of model guests, and seem mainly controlled by electrostatic interactions, as a function of the protonation/charge status of the polymer matrix. Packings of an unidimensional regular pore structure as model packings in size-exclusion and inverse size-exclusion chromatography

Using porous aluminas and aluminosilicates with a regular and well-defined pore structure an attempt was made to correlate the SEC data of polystyrenes with established theoretical models. The pore structure of the two types of packings was extensively characterized by means of transmission and scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen sorption and mercury porosimetry. The SEC distribution coefficients measured experimentally were correlated with the distribution coefficients calculated from the theoretical models for flexible polymers. PLLA/PLA scaffolds prepared via Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS): tuning of properties and biodegradability

Foams for tissue engineering applications were prepared via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) and blends of PLLA with PLA in different proportions were used (100/0, 90/10, 75/25, 50/50, 0/100 PLLA/PLA wt/wt) starting from ternary systems where dioxane was the solvent and water the non-solvent. Morphology was evaluated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (average pore size and interconnection) and the void fraction was measured by means of Hg porosimetry. The effect of the pore structure and zeta potential of porous polymer monoliths on separation performance in ion-exchange mode.

Most often, in bioseparations involving charged macromolecules, the chromatographic systems have low Reynolds and high Peclet numbers. For such systems, an expression is developed and presented in this work for evaluating the throughput in polymeric monoliths where ion-exchange adsorption occurs, as a function of (i) the pressure drop along the length of the monolith, (ii) the functional form and width of the throughpore-size distribution of the monolith, and (iii) the magnitude of the zeta potential on the surface of the throughpores of the monolith. Evaluation of a lattice-Boltzmann method for mercury intrusion porosimetry simulations

We have simulated intrusion of a non-wetting liquid into pores of varying shape and size. Simulations were based on the lattice-Boltzmann method and the Shan–Chen multiphase model. The liquid–solid contact angle for pores with circular cross-section was found to be equal to that for pores with square cross-section, and constant even for small pore sizes if the discretised shape of the circular cross-section was taken into account. For comparison, contact angle was also determined for a liquid column descending in a capillary tube, and the results were found to be consistent. Application of the method to mercury intrusion porosimetry is discussed.
