REGULATORY ELEMENTS OF THE LEUKAEMIA INHIBITORY FACTOR (LIF) PROMOTER IN MURINE BONE MARROW STROMAL CELLS

Leukaemia inhibitory factor (LIF) plays an important role as a haematopoietically active cytokine. As described earlier in a murine model, interleukin 1 (IL-1) induced LIF mRNA and protein expression. We utilized the murine cell line +/+-1.LDA11 to further define regulatory mechanisms of LIF expression in bone marrow stromal cells. The production of LIF mRNA is stimulated by IL-1beta, TNF-alpha, and the cAMP analogue 8-bromoadenosine 3':5'-monophosphate (8BrcAMP). LIF mRNA expression is controlled at the transcriptional level. Computer-supported collaborative inquiry learning and classroom scripts: Effects on help-seeking processes and learning outcomes

This study examined the influence of classroom-script structure (high vs. low) during computer-supported collaborative inquiry learning on help-seeking processes and learning gains in 54 student pairs in secondary science education. Screen- and audio-capturing videos were analysed according to a model of the help-seeking process. Results show that the structure of the classroom script substantially affects patterns of student help seeking and learning gain in the classroom. Overall, students in the high-structured classroom-script condition sought less help but learnt more than those in the low-structured classroom-script condition. A supercritical-fluid method for growing carbon nanotubes

Large‐scale generation of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MCNTs) is efficiently achieved through a supercritical fluid technique employing carbon dioxide as the carbon source. Nanotubes with diameters ranging from 10 to 20 nm and lengths of several tens of micrometers are synthesized (see figure). The supercritical‐fluid‐grown nanotubes also exhibit field‐emission characteristics similar to MCNTs grown by chemical‐vapor deposition.

Role of the support on the activity of H3PW12O40 supported on SiO2 or TiO2 in Catalytic and Photocatalytic propene hydration: An EPR Study

Catalytic and catalytic photo-assisted hydration of propene to 2-propanol in gas-solid regime at atmospheric pressure and 85°C were carried out by using the Keggin heteropolyacid (HPA) H3PW12O40 (PW12) supported on home prepared SiO2, WO3, TiO2 or N-doped TiO2. The HPA played the key role both in catalytic and photocatalytic reactions; however, the support strongly influenced the binary material performance. The contemporary presence of heat and UV light improved the activity of the (photo)catalysts. EPR (Electron Paramagnetic Resonance) has been used to understand the intimate mechanism underlying the photoactivity of the supported heteropolyacid and the role played by the support.

Anomalous surface diffusion of protons on lipid membranes.

AbstractThe cellular energy machinery depends on the presence and properties of protons at or in the vicinity of lipid membranes. To asses the energetics and mobility of a proton near a membrane, we simulated an excess proton near a solvated DMPC bilayer at 323 K, using a recently developed method to include the Grotthuss proton shuttling mechanism in classical molecular dynamics simulations. We obtained a proton surface affinity of −13.0 ± 0.5 kJ mol−1. The proton interacted strongly with both lipid headgroup and linker carbonyl oxygens. α-d-Glucopyranose Adsorption on a Pd30 Cluster Supported on Boron Nitride Nanotube

Boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) as an innovative support for carbohydrate transformation processes was evaluated, using density functional theory. The α-d-glucopyranose adsorption on a Pd30 cluster, supported on BNNT, was used to check both the local activity of topologically different metallic sites and the effects of the proximity of the BNNT surface to the same metallic sites. Detailed geometrical and electronic analyses performed on Pd30/BNNT and α-d-glucopyranose/Pd30/BNNT systems were discussed. Previous studies have shown that particular cognitive processing of food stimuli could contribute to the maintenance and development of obesity. [EN] This paper presents a qualitative analysis about the determinants related to rescheduling travel mode decisions during the activity scheduling process. Notably, we were interested to study changes between intention and behavior. Data used came from an in-depth Computer Assisted Telephone Interview (CATI) follow up survey to habitual drivers carried out during the implementation of a panel survey.
