Procalcitonin and long-term prognosis after an admission for acute heart failure

2014

Abstract Background Traditionally, procalcitonin (PCT) is considered a diagnostic marker of bacterial infections. However, slightly elevated levels of PCT have also been found in patients with heart failure. In this context, it has been suggested that PCT may serve as a proxy for underrecognized infection, endotoxemia, or heightened proinflammatory activity. Nevertheless, the clinical utility of PCT in this setting is scarce. We aimed to evaluate the association between PCT and the risk of long-term outcomes. Methods and results We measured at admission PCT of 261 consecutive patients admitted for acute heart failure (AHF) after excluding active infection. Cox and negative binomial regressi…

Downscaling climate change impacts, socio-economic implications and alternative adaptation pathways for islands and outermost regions

2021

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the futur…

The impact of oophorectomy on survival from breast cancer in patients with CHEK2 mutations

2022

BACKGROUND: To estimate the impact of oophorectomy and other treatments on the survival of breast cancer patients with a CHEK2 mutation. METHODS: Women with Stage I–III breast cancer who were treated at 17 hospitals in Poland were tested for four founder mutations in the CHEK2 gene. 974 women (10%) were positive for a CHEK2 mutation. Control patients without a CHEK2 mutation were selected from a database of patients treated over the same time period. Information on treatments received and distant recurrences were retrieved from medical records. Treatments included chemotherapy, hormonal therapy (tamoxifen) and radiation therapy. Oophorectomies were performed for the treatment of breast canc…

XPO1E571K Mutation Modifies Exportin 1 Localisation and Interactome in B-cell Lymphoma

2020

The XPO1 gene encodes exportin 1 (XPO1) that controls the nuclear export of cargo proteins and RNAs. Almost 25% of primary mediastinal B-cell lymphoma (PMBL) and classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) cases harboured a recurrent XPO1 point mutation (NM_003400, chr2:g61718472C&gt

Intratumoral heterogeneity of DNA content in renal cell carcinoma and its prognostic significance

1999

BACKGROUND A multiple sampling study was performed on 124 specimens of renal cell carcinomas to analyze the consistency and reliability of DNA measurements. The authors investigated intratumoral DNA heterogeneity and its role as a adverse prognostic factor for disease progression. METHODS DNA content was analyzed by flow cytometry on three different samples of the same tumor. The Cronbach α coefficient was used to assess the reliability and a Cox proportional hazards model was used to test the effect of DNA ploidy heterogeneity on time of disease progression. RESULTS The agreement among the DNA ploidy samples was high. The number of aneuploid findings increased significantly with the number…

Metallothionein expression in ovarian cancer in relation to histopathological parameters and molecular markers of prognosis

2001

Metallothioneins (MTs) and glutathione constitute the major fractions of intracellular thiol factors. Abundant nucleophilic sulfhydryl groups can interact with many electrophilic substances, including several anti-neoplastic agents, participate in controlling intracellular redox potential, and act as scavengers of reactive oxygen species. In the present study, we examined the relation of MTs (alone and in combination with glutathione) to histopathological parameters and survival time of ovarian cancer patients. Expression of the major MT isoforms (MT-1 and MT-2) was determined by immunohistochemistry on paraffin-embedded tumor specimens from 189 patients, 151 suffering from primary epitheli…

Abstract 4258: Preliminarily results of the Oncohabitats Study: A multicentre validation of overall survival (OS) estimation of patients with gliobla…

2019

Abstract We report preliminarily results of an international retrospective study (NCT03439332) analyzing the prognostic value of the early assessment of vascular architecture of glioblastoma (GBM). The initial cohort included 300 pts treated at 7 European hospitals. Multiparametric images were processed by Oncohabitats (www.oncohabitats.upv.es) to obtain the cerebral blood volume (CBV) and cerebral blood flow (CBF) from 4 automatically delimited regions of interest (ROIs): high angiogenic tumor (HAT), low angiogenic tumor (LAT), infiltrating peripherial edema (IPE), and vasogenic peripherial edema (VPE). Uniparametric Cox regression models and Kaplan-Meier analysis were developed to test pr…

Multidisciplinary treatment of primary Ewing's sarcoma of bone.A 6-year experience of a European cooperative trial

1988

The German Society of Pediatric Oncology in 1981 initiated the Cooperative Ewing's Sarcoma Study (CESS 81) using a four-drug combination of chemotherapy prior to definitive local control with surgery and/or radiation. From January 1, 1981 until February 28, 1985, 93 patients were registered at the trial office from 54 participating institutions in West Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. On February 1, 1987, 54 of 93 patients were disease-free. Using the Kaplan-Meier life table analysis, the estimated disease-free survival (DFS) rate was 60% at 36 months and 55% at 69 months. The median period of observation was 29 months, ranging from 22 months to 69 months. Twenty-one of 9…
