Abstract We investigated CD8 + T cell frequencies of five different Epstein–Barr virus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocyte epitopes located within proteins of the replicative cycle and the latent state in healthy long-term virus carriers with IFN-γ enzyme-linked immunospot assay. Frequencies of the HLA-A3-restricted epitope RVRAYTYSK (RVR) whose minimal length was mapped in this study to amino acid position 148–156 of the immediate-early protein BRLF1 were compared with those of a further known HLA-A3-restricted epitope within EBNA3A, RLRAEAQVK (RLR). Significance of pantothenate for glucose fermentation by Oenococcus oeni and for suppression of the erythritol and acetate production.

The heterofermentative lactic acid bacterium Oenococcus oeni requires pantothenic acid for growth. In the presence of sufficient pantothenic acid, glucose was converted by heterolactic fermentation stoichiometrically to lactate, ethanol and CO2. Under pantothenic acid limitation, substantial amounts of erythritol, acetate and glycerol were produced by growing and resting bacteria. Production of erythritol and glycerol was required to compensate for the decreasing ethanol production and to enable the synthesis of acetate. Foreign capital, credit constraints and continuity of firms’ R&D

ABSTRACTIn this article, we investigate the role of foreign capital participation as a means for firms to overcome the obstacle posed by credit constraints to sustain R&D investments. Using data for Spanish manufacturing firms in the period 1990–2006, we show that firms with foreign capital are significantly less likely to stop already initiated R&D projects and also more likely to sustain R&D investment when facing credit constraints. Our results are robust to positive selection into foreign capital participation, which we control through a set of variables chosen from a propensity score estimation, and to firms’ fixed-effects.

AbstractDuring a pandemic, robust estimation of case fatality rates (CFRs) is essential to plan and control suppression and mitigation strategies. At present, estimates for the CFR of COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection vary considerably. Expert consensus of 0.1–1% covers in practical terms a range from normal seasonable Influenza to Spanish Influenza. R&D Offshoring and the Productivity Growth of European Regions

The recent increase in R&D offshoring have raised fears that knowledge and competitiveness in advanced countries may be at risk of `hollowing out\'. At the same time, economic research has stressed that this process is also likely to allow some reverse technology transfer and foster growth at home. This paper addresses this issue by investigating the extent to which R&D offshoring is associated with productivity dynamics of European regions. We find that offshoring regions have higher productivity growth, but this positive effect fades down with the number of investment projects carried out abroad. One of the most used techniques to study structural variation at a genome level is paired-end mapping (PEM). PEM has the advantage of being able to detect balanced events, such as inversions and translocations. However, inversions are still quite difficult to predict reliably, especially from high-throughput sequencing data. We simulated realistic PEM experiments with different combinations of read and library fragment lengths, including sequencing errors and meaningful base-qualities, to quantify and track down the origin of false positives and negatives along sequencing, mapping, and downstream analysis. Determinants of Chairman Compensation

This study examines determinants of chairman compensation in a supervisory board setting and, specifically, the relationship between chairman and CEO compensation. Using a sample of publicly listed firms in Sweden, the study indicates that chairman compensation – despite its fixed nature – is reflective of firm performance via a positive relationship to CEO compensation. As CEO compensation is set before chairman compensation, we argue that the chairman may be inclined to conspire with the CEO in earnings management efforts at the expense of monitoring on behalf of investors.
