“A certain amount of ‘recantation’”: On the origins of Frank H. Knight’s antipositivism
2016
The aim of this paper is to investigate in some detail the origins of Knight’s antipositism and to assess the main influences that brought him to a change in methodological perspective after 1921. As importantly, what follows is also an attempt to increase our general understanding of the methodological debates taking place during the early decades of the last century and to shed new light on the inherently pluralistic character of US interwar economics. This paper is organized as follows: the first section outlines Knight’s methodological views as presented in his early works; the second section discusses Knight’s “recantation” and his attack on behavioristic social science; the third sect…
2018
L’Amore. Fisiologia – Psicologia – Morale is probably the highest level of De Roberto’s ideology, and at same time it may be considered as a turning point in the poetic of this author. De Roberto lives in a Positivist age, and he deeply trusts in the instrument of reason. In this work he aims to demonstrate all the contradictions of love and the egoism of the social life. So, De Roberto arrives to a uneasy Positivism, which is focused not only on the “how” of the phenomena, but also to the “why”. Under this point of view, De Roberto’s relativism is similar to that one of Pirandello, and it announces the incoming Modernism. Even if it is impossible to join the truth, De Roberto doesn’t quit …
Positivism, Legal Validity, and the Separation of Law and Morals
2014
The essay discusses the import of the separability thesis both for legal positivism and for contemporary legal practice. First, the place of the separability thesis in legal positivism will be explored, distinguishing between “standard positivism” and “post-Hartian positivism.” Then I will consider various kinds of relations between law and morality that are worthy of jurisprudential interest, and explore, from a positivist point of view, what kind of relations between law and morality must be rejected, what kind of such relations should be taken into account, and what kind of such relations are indeed of no import at all. The upshot of this analysis consists in highlighting the distinction…
2016
The present article seeks to recover some pedagogical ideas forgotten and abandoned by current mainstream pedagogy. Namely, it refers to ideas taken from art and history, «useless» models that deviate from the «useful» positivistic, materialistic and commercial ideas that are shaping the future of pedagogy. First, we briefly describe the movement founded by Germano Celant in 1967 known as «arte povera», noting that there are innumerable thought constructions related to his work that are relevant for pedagogy. «Poor pedagogy» emerges from the comparison between «arte povera» and pedagogy, a concept that recycles ideas that have fallen into oblivion despite their enormous interest. Secondly, …
Authenticity and well-being on social network sites: A two-wave longitudinal study on the effects of online authenticity and the positivity bias in S…
2014
In offline settings, authentic behavior has frequently been linked to increased well-being. Social network sites (SNSs) provide a new venue for authenticity, yet the effects of online authenticity are largely unknown. The present study investigated the reciprocal effects of authenticity on SNSs and the psychological well-being of SNS users in a two-wave longitudinal study (N=374). The results demonstrate that online authenticity had a positive longitudinal effect on three indicators of subjective well-being. The data further illustrate that this beneficial effect of SNS use is not equally accessible to all users: participants with low levels of well-being were less likely to feel authentic …
Inclusive Legal Positivism, Legal Interpretation and Value-Judgments
2009
Decoding the XXI Century’s Marketing Shift: An Agency Theory Framework
2016
Since the beginning of the XXI century, marketing theory has moved through a series of epistemological shifts from modern positivism to postmodern constructivism. This has resulted in a series of changes to the main concepts of “traditional” marketing such as: market, product, customer, and value. These shifts can be better viewed under a social cybernetics approach such as agency theory. This is because there is now a view that the linear concept of value creation needs to give way to the more complex process of value cocreation, where value is created collectively. Agency theory is one approach that is able to shed light on how customers and providers are able to recursively create collec…
