Reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome in a patient with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is an autoimmune disorder characterised by fever, microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia, renal insufficiency, and thrombocytopenia. Neurological involvement, a prominent component of TTP, is characterised by a variety of brain lesions which include reversible cerebral oedema or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome (RPLS). TTP is frequently associated with deficiency of the von Willebrand factor-cleaving protease, ADAMTS13.Here, we report a case of TTP with severe acute encephalopathy. The neurohypophysial peptide oxytocin (OT) and OT-like hormones facilitate reproduction in all vertebrates at several levels. The major site of OT gene expression is the magnocellular neurons of the hypothalamic paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei. In response to a variety of stimuli such as suckling, parturition, or certain kinds of stress, the processed OT peptide is released from the posterior pituitary into the systemic circulation. Such stimuli also lead to an intranuclear release of OT. Moreover, oxytocinergic neurons display widespread projections throughout the central nervous system. Refractive changes in nuclear, cortical and posterior subcapsular cataracts. Effect of the type and grade

Purpose: To determine the effect of main morphological types and grades of age-related cataracts on refractive error. Methods: We measured 276 subjects with optical compensation prior to the development of cataract. We evaluated 224 eyes with nuclear cataract, 125 with cortical cataract, and 103 with posterior subcapsular (PSC) cataract classified with LOCSIII. We measured visual acuity (VA) with their spectacles and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) with chart in decimal scale to obtain the optimal compensation with cataract. ECHOCARDIOGRAPHIC ASSESSMENT OF 537 DOGS WITH MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE AND LEAFLET INVOLVEMENT

In this work we investigated which mitral valve leaflet was most often involved in mitral valve prolapse with degenerative mitral valve disease and whether there was an association with breed, age, gender, or weight. Five hundred and thirty-seven dogs with mitral valve prolapse-degenerative mitral valve disease were assessed; the cross-breed dog was the most represented breed (248 dogs, 46.2%). Mitral valve prolapse was more common in male dogs, and the average age was 11.3 +/- 2.8 years. Prolapse of the anterior leaflet was present in 48.4% of dogs, prolapse of the the posterior leaflet in 7.1%, and bileaflet prolapse was present in 44.5%; this distribution is different than that typically…

Background and Purpose Photoreactive flow changes of the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) in control subjects and patients with unilateral occipital lobe infarction were investigated to study the hypothesis that occipital lobe infarction of varying extent leads to a reduced visually activated flow increase in the ipsilateral PCA. Methods Maximum mean flow velocity (MFV) of the PCA was investigated by transcranial Doppler sonography after photic stimulation of the retina. Frequency-dependent effects of activation and inhibition of protein kinase C on neurohypophysial release of oxytocin and vasopressin

Isolated rat neurohypophyses were superfused in vitro and the release of vasopressin and oxytocin into the medium was determined by specific radioimmunoassays. Hormone secretion was increased by electrical stimulation of the pituitary stalk at different frequencies. 1 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation of the unaffected hemisphere ameliorates contralesional visuospatial neglect in humans

The aim of the study was to investigate whether low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the unaffected hemisphere can ameliorate visuospatial neglect. We treated three right brain damaged patients with left neglect. 900 pulses (1 Hz frequency) were given over left posterior parietal cortex every other day for 2 weeks. Patients performed a computerized task requiring length judgement of prebisected lines, tachistoscopically presented for 150 ms. Posterior compartment of the lower leg reconstruction with free functional rectus femoris transfer after sarcoma resection.

A 72-year-old man with the third recurrence of a low-grade liposarcoma of the right lower leg came to our attention seeking limb-salvage surgery. The tumour was removed en bloc with all the superficial posterior compartment of the leg. Appropriate foot flexion was restored by means of a free-functional rectus femoris musculocutaneous flap harvested from the ipsilateral thigh. The patient was kept on a postoperative splint for 6 weeks. Three months after the operation, clinical and elecromyographic signs of reinnervation were observed.
