Individualized Template MRI Is a Valid and Reliable Alternative to Individual MRI for Spatial Tracking in Navigated TMS Studies in Healthy Subjects

2020

Objectives: Navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) provides significant benefits over classic TMS. Yet, the acquisition of individual structural magnetic resonance images (MRIindividual) is a time-consuming, expensive, and not feasible prerequisite in all subjects for spatial tracking and anatomical guidance in nTMS studies. We hypothesize that spatial transformation can be used to adjust MRI templates to individual head shapes (MRIwarped) and that TMS parameters do not differ between nTMS using MRIindividual or MRIwarped.Materials and Methods: Twenty identical TMS sessions, each including four different navigation conditions, were conducted in 10 healthy subjects (one female, 2…

Energy crops: the link between education and science

2018

Włączenie do bilansu energetycznego przemysłu rolno - spożywczego paliw biologicznych jako odnawialnych zasobów gromadzenia energii słonecznej jest obecnie jednym z najważniejszych zadań rozwojowych. Jednak korzystanie z energii biomasy jest ograniczone technologicznie, brakiem odpowiedniego sprzętu i specjalistów. W ciągu 10 lat pracy badawczej prowadzono badania teoretyczno - praktyczne poświęcone możliwościom upraw roślin energetycznych. Podstawą badań teoretycznych był znaczący przegląd literatury i materiałów z publikacji naukowych krajowych i zagranicznych, technik przetwarzania i odpowiedniego doradztwa naukowego. Do przeglądu analitycznego literatury wykorzystaliśmy ogólne naukowe m…

Does predictability matter? Effects of cue predictability on neurocognitive mechanisms underlying prospective memory

2015

Prospective memory (PM) represents the ability to successfully realize intentions when the appropriate moment or cue occurs. In this study, we used event-related potentials (ERPs) to explore the impact of cue predictability on the cognitive and neural mechanisms supporting PM. Participants performed an ongoing task and, simultaneously, had to remember to execute a pre-specified action when they encountered the PM cues. The occurrence of the PM cues was predictable (being signalled by a warning cue) for some participants and was completely unpredictable for others. In the predictable cue condition, the behavioural and ERP correlates of strategic monitoring were observed mainly in the ongoing…

A generalized methodology for distribution systems faults identification, location and characterization

2005

Service continuity is of basic importance in the definition of the quality of the electrical energy, for this reason, the research in the field of faults diagnostic for distribution systems is spreading ever more. In this paper, a new methodology for diagnostic management of automated distribution systems is presented. The technique is based on the solution of a circuital model of the electrical system resulting from the composition of distributed parameters quadripoles. The solution gives as a result the identification of the type of fault, of its characteristic parameters and location. The paper shows an application to line to line grounded and ungrounded faults in which also its precisio…

Higher-order energy density functionals in nuclear self-consistent theory

2011

In this thesis consisting of two publications and an overview part, a study of two aspects of energy density functionals has been performed. Firstly, we have linked the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order nuclear energy density functional to a zero-range pseudopotential that includes all possible terms up to sixth order in derivatives. Within the Hartree-Fock approximation, the quasi-local nuclear Energy Density Functional (EDF) has been calculated as the average energy obtained from the pseudopotential. The direct reference of the EDF to the pseudopotential acts as a constraint that allows for expressing the isovector coupling constants functional in terms of the isoscalar ones, or vice …

Burst analysis tool for developing neuronal networks exhibiting highly varying action potential dynamics

2012

In this paper we propose a firing statistics based neuronal network burst detection algorithm for neuronal networks exhibiting highly variable action potential dynamics. Electrical activity of neuronal networks is generally analyzed by the occurrences of spikes and bursts both in time and space. Commonly accepted analysis tools employ burst detection algorithms based on predefined criteria. However, maturing neuronal networks, such as those originating from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs), exhibit highly variable network structure and time-varying dynamics. To explore the developing burst/spike activities of such networks, we propose a burst detection algorithm which utilizes the firing …

Enhancing Metastability by Dissipation and Driving in an Asymmetric Bistable Quantum System.

2018

The stabilizing effect of quantum fluctuations on the escape process and the relaxation dynamics from a quantum metastable state are investigated. Specifically, the quantum dynamics of a multilevel bistable system coupled to a bosonic Ohmic thermal bath in strong dissipation regime is analyzed. The study is performed by a non-perturbative method based on the real-time path integral approach of the Feynman-Vernon influence functional. We consider a strongly asymmetric double well potential with and without a monochromatic external driving, and with an out-of-equilibrium initial condition. In the absence of driving we observe a nonmonotonic behavior of the escape time from the metastable regi…

Estudio unificado del espectro y propiedades de mesones pesados para energı́as por debajo y por encima de umbrales mesón-mesón

2022

Asymptotic freedom and color confinement are undoubtedly the most remarkable aspects of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Indeed, it is because of these features that QCD is universally accepted as the quantum field theory of strong interactions. On the one hand, asymptotic freedom, meaning that the theory approaches a noninteracting one in the high energy limit, allows for a perturbative treatment, so that the QCD Lagrangian can be used to derive analytical expressions describing high-energy processes. On the other hand, color confinement, implying that all observable states are color-neutral, is a purely nonperturbative phenomenon, which prevents an analytical calculation of the low-energy in…

Aplidin® induces JNK-dependent apoptosis in human breast cancer cells via alteration of glutathione homeostasis, Rac1 GTPase activation, and MKP-1 ph…

2006

Aplidin® is an antitumor agent in phase II clinical trials that induces apoptosis through the sustained activation of Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK). We report that Aplidin® alters glutathione homeostasis increasing the ratio of oxidized to reduced forms (GSSG/GSH). Aplidin® generates reactive oxygen species and disrupts the mitochondrial membrane potential. Exogenous GSH inhibits these effects and also JNK activation and cell death. We found two mechanisms by which Aplidin® activates JNK: rapid activation of Rac1 small GTPase and downregulation of MKP-1 phosphatase. Rac1 activation was diminished by GSH and enhanced by L-buthionine (SR)-sulfoximine, which inhibits GSH synthesis. Downregulatio…

Biological and Proteomic Characterization of the Anti-Cancer Potency of Aqueous Extracts from Cell-Free Coelomic Fluid of Arbacia lixula Sea Urchin i…

2022

Echinoderms are an acknowledged source of bioactive compounds exerting various beneficial effects on human health. Here, we examined the potential in vitro anti-hepatocarcinoma effects of aqueous extracts of the cell-free coelomic fluid obtained from the sea urchin Arbacia lixula using the HepG2 cell line as a model system. This was accomplished by employing a combination of colorimetric, microscopic and flow cytometric assays to determine cell viability, cell cycle distribution, the possible onset of apoptosis, the accumulation rate of acidic vesicular organelles, mitochondrial polarization, cell redox state and cell locomotory ability. The obtained data show that exposed HepG2 cells under…
