AbstractAttention-related processes include three functional sub-components: alerting, orienting, and inhibition. We investigated these components using EEG-based, brain event-related potentials and their neuronal source activations during the Attention Network Test in typically developing school-aged children. Participants were asked to detect the swimming direction of the centre fish in a group of five fish. The target stimulus was either preceded by a cue (centre, double, or spatial) or no cue. Impaired semantic processing during sentence reading in children with dyslexia: combined fMRI and ERP evidence

Developmental dyslexia is a specific disorder of reading acquisition characterized by a phonological core deficit. Sentence reading is also impaired in dyslexic readers, but whether semantic processing deficits contribute is unclear. Combining spatially and temporally sensitive neuroimaging techniques to focus on semantic processing can provide a more comprehensive characterization of sentence reading in dyslexia. Nitric oxide modulates striatal neuronal activity via soluble guanylyl cyclase: an in vivo microiontophoretic study in rats.

It is now well established that nitric oxide (NO) acts as a neuromodulator in the central nervous system. To assess the role of NO in modulating striatal activity, single-unit recording was combined with iontophoresis to study presumed spiny projection neurons in urethane-anesthetized male rats. Striatal neurons recorded were essentially quiescent and were therefore activated to fire by the iontophoretic administration of glutamate, pulsed in cycles of 30 sec on and 40 sec off. Backfiring of the isolated rat phrenic nerve does not collide with impulse propagation following repetitive nerve stimulation at 1-50 Hz.

Acetylcholinesterase inhibition with neostigmine in the isolated rat phrenic nerve-hemidiaphragm preparation induced axonal backfiring and repetitive compound muscle action potentials following single nerve stimulation. The duration of backfiring and the repetitive compound muscle action potentials did not exceed 55 ms. With repetitive nerve stimulation at frequencies ranging from 1 to 50 Hz, backfiring was present only with the first stimulus and the amplitude of the second compound muscle action potential was maximally reduced, while the subsequent responses recovered gradually. Acute effects of 15min static or contract-relax stretching modalities on plantar flexors neuromuscular properties

The present study aimed to investigate the immediate effects of 15 min static or sub-maximal contract-relax stretching modalities on the neuromuscular properties of plantar flexor muscles. Ten male volunteers were tested before and immediately after 15 min static or contract-relax stretching programs of plantar flexor muscles (20 stretches). Static stretching consisted in 30s stretches to the point of discomfort. Linguistic relevance of duration within the native language determines the accuracy of speech-sound duration processing.

As indexed by electrophysiological measures, in native speakers of a language with linguistically significant opposition between short and long phonemes, the pre-attentive detection accuracy of duration changes in speech sounds was tuned in comparison with that in non-speech sounds. This was not observed in advanced second-language users of the same language, suggesting that second-language acquisition does not lead to speech-specific tuning of the duration processing as does native language acquisition in early childhood.

Muscular performances at the ankle joint in young and elderly men.

The effect of aging on mechanical and electromyographic characteristics of ankle joint muscles was investigated in 11 young (mean age 24 years) and 12 elderly (mean age 77 years) males. Maximal and submaximal isometric voluntary torques were measured during ankle plantarflexion and dorsiflexion. Electromyographic activities of triceps surae and tibialis anterior muscles were recorded. The elderly group developed equal maximal dorsiflexion torques (42 vs 45 N.m, p >.05), but in plantarflexion, the elderly group was weaker (80 vs 132 N.m, p <.001) and presented a decreased twitch amplitude (11 vs 16 N.m) and lower coactivation (8% vs 15%) than that of the young adults.
