Summary Background The UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are grounded in the global ambition of "leaving no one behind". Understanding today's gains and gaps for the health-related SDGs is essential for decision makers as they aim to improve the health of populations. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016 (GBD 2016), we measured 37 of the 50 health-related SDG indicators over the period 1990–2016 for 188 countries, and then on the basis of these past trends, we projected indicators to 2030. Methods We used standardised GBD 2016 methods to measure 37 health-related indicators from 1990 to 2016, an increase of four indicators since GBD 2015. W…
Pobreza en España: jóvenes y mujeres en los espacios sociales de la vulnerabilidad
2011
This number of Quaderns presents the results of two research projects of the program I+D+i financed by the Spanish Ministry of Education for the period 2008 to 2011. The first project is called 'New poverty and social exclusion among youth in Spain' and was supervised by Ph. D. Ignasi Brunet. The second project was developed under the name of 'Poverty, social exclusion and gender inequality in Spain' and was supervised by Ph. D. Ángel Belzunegui. Both projects counted with a group formed by researchers from six Spanish universities from different regions where field work was carried out: Andalucía, Aragón, Cataluña, Comunidad Valenciana, Murcia y País Vasco. The first project has analyzed p…

CSCL for NGO's Cross cultural Virtual Teams in Africa: An Ethiopian Children Advocacy Case Study against Exclusion and toward Facilitation of Express…
2005
This exploratory pilot study shows that NGO's involved in Children Advocacy through Arts in Africa are willing to use a groupware, meaning a computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL) environment. Innovative ideas and best practices among NGOs would be shared easily worldwide. Little scientific information is available to help them make a sound choice. This study suggests that some NGOs based in Ethiopia/Africa have specific needs which should translate in specific context analysis and interface development: 1) an intercultural approach to creativity, arts and innovation, and 2) emphasis should be placed on tools to facilitate asynchronous systematic conception and sharing of intra an…
Urban poverty: Measurement theory and evidence from American cities
2021
AbstractWe characterize axiomatically a new index of urban poverty that i) captures aspects of the incidence and distribution of poverty across neighborhoods of a city, ii) is related to the Gini index and iii) is consistent with empirical evidence that living in a high poverty neighborhood is detrimental for many dimensions of residents’ well-being. Widely adopted measures of urban poverty, such as the concentrated poverty index, may violate some of the desirable properties we outline. Furthermore, we show that changes of urban poverty within the same city are additively decomposable into the contribution of demographic, convergence, re-ranking and spatial effects. We collect new evidence …
Inequality and economic growth across countries of the Eurozone
2018
The EU economic recovery after the financial crisis is being accompanied by sluggish and unsteady growth with high levels of inequality. The relationship between income inequality and the rate of economic growth still remains a controversial issue with discrepancies in the results reported in many empirical and theoretical studies of growth and development. We explore the impact of income inequality, poverty, and wealth on the rate of economic growth in the Eurozone. We find that the effect of income inequality on economic growth is statistically insignificant, whereas poverty and savings have a negative, statistically significant effect on growth, while the effect of financial assets is po…
The Impact of Government Spending on the Private Sector: Crowding-out versus Crowding-in Effects
2011
Summary We contribute to the empirical literature on the effect of government spending on economic activity, by assessing the impact of changes in government spending-GDP ratio on (the short-term growth rates of) private consumption and investment. We do this by analysing a panel sample of 145 countries from 1960 to 2007. The results of our paper suggest that government spending produces important crowding-out effects, by negatively affecting both private consumption and investment. The result is broadly robust to both country and time effects, and different econometric specifications. In addition, we show that the effect of government consumption on private consumption and investment does …
Towards the Post-Carbon Society: Searching for Signs of the Transition and Identifying Obstacles
2016
The transition to a post-carbon society, in which the consumption of fossil fuels falls over time, is determined by the need to prevent catastrophic climate change, the increasing cost of energy and complex combinations of both these causes. The transition will not only entail political adjustments and the replacement of some technologies by others, but will be accompanied by social and cultural changes that bring about substantial modifications in the organization of our societies and our ways of life. Based on the situation in Spain, this article analyses whether the current conditions, which date back to the crisis that began in 2007, favour a benign and smooth transition, or, on the con…
Crise économique et grande distribution : ressenti des managers et solutions managériales
2016
Mass retail, since the postwar boom, has developed a mass distribution suitable for mass production flow. However, with the insecurity and impoverishment of consumers, this business model evolves. Some individuals, disaffiliated, are no longer financially able to get their supplies in major outlets and overall, French have changed their buying behavior. This article aims to analyze, through a qualitative study, how the crisis is perceived by department managers and managerial solutions tracks that could be implemented in a crisis context. The originality of this research lies in the chosen angle, that of department managers' perception since they are in front line to see one of the conseque…
The impact of COVID-19 on alternative and local food systems and the potential for the sustainability transition: Insights from 13 countries
2021
The COVID-19 pandemic has been a major stress test for the agri-food system. While most research has analysed the impact of the pandemic on mainstream food systems, this article examines how alternative and local food systems (ALFS) in 13 countries responded in the first months of the crisis. Using primary and secondary data and combining the Multi-Level Perspective with social innovation approaches, we highlight the innovations and adaptations that emerged in ALFS, and how these changes have created or supported the sustainability transition in production and consumption systems. In particular, we show how the combination of social and technological innovation, greater citizen involvement,…
