Magnesium alloys laser (Nd:YAG) cladding and alloying with side injection of aluminium powder
2003
International audience; The development of the high purity magnesium alloys (such as WE43) incites the designers to reconsider them, and the car industry appears, these days, the most interested to use this kind of alloy. However, due to their ignitability and tendency to oxidation, magnesium alloys require surface treatments. A series of experiments was carried out in order to improve the corrosion resistance of two types of magnesium alloys, WE43 and ZE41. In most cases, the substrate surface was treated before laser interaction. Side injection of aluminium powder under a 3 kW cw Nd:YAG laser was employed. The deposited layers present very good bond properties. The resulting microstructur…
Inhalable nano into micro dry powders for ivacaftor delivery: The role of mannitol and cysteamine as mucus-active agents.
2020
In this paper the innovative approach of Nano into micro (NiM9 was developed to produce Nanoparticles loaded Ivacaftor to incorporate into mannitol or mannitol/cysteamine micromatrices for drug pulmonary administration in CF. Nanoparticles composed by a mixture of two polyhydrohydroxyethtylaspartamide copolymers containing a loading of Ivacaftor of 15.5 % w/w were produced. These Nanoparticles were incorporated into microparticles to obtain NiM that were characterized in terms of size and size distribution, interaction with CF-AM by rheological and turbidimetric studies as well as by aerodynamic diameter measurements. Finally the activity of Ivacaftor into these NiM was evaluated by in vitr…
High-performance liquid chromatography of lactose with evaporative light scattering detection, applied to determine fine particle dose of carrier in …
2005
A method for quantification of the fine particle dose of lactose is described, using a hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) method and evaporative light scattering detection. The HILIC method used an aminopropyl column and a mobile phase consisting of acetonitril/water (80/20, v/v) for isocratic elution. Sensitive chromatography was obtained using a low concentration of water in the extraction solvent. The detection limit (RSD10%) at an injection volume of 10 microL is 10 microg/mL. Linearity was obtained in the range of 10-80 microg/mL (R(2)0.99). A relative standard deviation (RSD) of 0.5% (N=6) demonstrated good precision of the optimized method.
Loading, release and stability of epirubicin-loaded drug-eluting beads.
2015
Purpose The aim of this study was to determine the loading efficiency, physico-chemical stability and release of epirubicin-loaded DC Bead™ (Biocompatibles UK Ltd, a BTG International group company) (bead size 70–150 µm (=DC Bead M1™) and 100–300 µm) after loading with epirubicin solution (2 mg/ml) or reconstituted powder formulation (25 mg/ml) and controlled storage. Methods DC Bead™ were loaded with 76 mg epirubicin solution (Epimedac™, Medac GmbH) or 75 mg epirubicin powder formulation (Farmorubicin™, Pharmacia Pfizer GmbH) per 2 ml of beads. Drug loading efficiency and stability were determined by measuring the epirubicin concentration in the excess solution after predetermined interval…
Solving underwater crimes: development of latent prints made on submerged objects.
2013
Underwater crime scenes always present a challenge for forensic researchers, as the destructive effect of water considerably complicates the chances of recovering material of evidential value. The aim of this study is to tackle the problem of developing marks that have been left on submerged objects. Fingermark deposition was randomly made on two surfaces - glass and plastic whilst the material was submerged under tap water and then left for one to fifteen days before drying and development. For their later development, various reagents - Black Powder, Silver Metallic Powder, Fluorescent Powder, Sudan Black (powder and solution) and Small Particle Reagent - were used and the effectiveness o…
On the use of a powder rheometer to characterize the powder flowability at low consolidation with torque resistances
2017
The Anton Paar Powder Cell was used to measure the torque necessary to rotate an impeller in beds of glass beads, sand and alumina powders aerated between no aeration to the minimum for fluidization. Measured torque values depend on the material tested, on the air flow rate applied, on the impeller depth and on the height of the impeller blade. The effect of the impeller depth is linear for low impeller depth and is less than linear at high depth values. A model was developed for the interpretation of the experimental results based on the idea that the material is shearing on the surface described by the impeller rotation. The model allows to estimate an effectiveness of the impeller in the…
Comparison of the chemopreventive efficacies of garlic powders with different alliin contents against aflatoxin B1 carcinogenicity in rats
2004
Garlic (Allium sativum) is well known for its beneficial effects on health and particularly for its chemopreventive potential against cancer. The present study was designed to compare the chemopreventive efficacies of several garlic powders with various levels of alliin, a precursor of active sulfur compounds. For this purpose we used the medium-term hepatocarcinogenesis protocol (resistant hepatocyte model), which allows the detection of preneoplasic foci expressing the placental form of glutathione S-transferase (GST-P) as an end-point. Rats were fed diets containing three garlic powders (5% of the diet) with various alliin contents for 3 weeks. Garlic powders were obtained from bulbs gro…
Long-term response of marine benthic fauna to thin-layer capping with powdered activated carbon in the Grenland fjords, Norway
2021
The Grenland fjords in Norway have a long history of contamination by large emissions of dioxins and mercury. As a possible sediment remediation method in situ, thin-layer capping with powdered activated carbon (AC) mixed with clay was applied at two test sites at 30 m and 95 m depth in the Grenland fjords. This study presents long-term effects of the AC treatment on the benthic community structure, i.e. nine years after capping. Capping with AC significantly reduced the number of species, their abundance and biomass at the two test sites, compared to uncapped reference sites. At the more shallow site, the dominant brittle star species Amphiura filiformis disappeared shortly after capping a…
Microbial and chemical origins of the bactericidal activity of thermally treated yellow mustard powder toward Escherichia coli O157:H7 during dry sau…
2010
Abstract Work examines the origin of bactericidal activity in mustard flour and explores the relative contribution from starter cultures, E. coli O157:H7 itself and other sources. Bacteria can degrade naturally occurring glucosinolates in mustard and form isothiocyanates with antimicrobial activity. In the present work, 24 starter cultures (mostly from commercial mixtures) were screened for their capacity to decompose the glucosinolate, sinalbin. The most active pair, Pediococcus pentosaceus UM 121P and Staphylococcus carnosus UM 123M, were used together for the production of dry fermented sausage contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 (~ 6.5 log CFU/g). They were compared to industrial starters…
Affinity scale between a carrier and a drug in DPI studied by atomic force microscopy.
2002
The dry powder inhalers (DPIs) consist, in the most cases, of ordered mixture where the particles adhesion results of interactions between the drug and the carrier. Generally, one step of production process is the micronization of the drug particles in order to reduce the size for ordered mixing optimization. But this operation is known to partially create an amorphous surface. In this case, surrounding storage conditions, like relative humidity (RH), are able to modify the percentage of amorphous drug surface. The aim of this study was to investigate surface reactivity, surface energy and direct force measurements by atomic force microscopy (AFM) between lactose (carrier) and zanamivir (dr…
