Enhanced flexible algorithm for the optimization of slot filling factors in electrical machines †

2020

The continuous development in the field of industrial automation and electric mobility has led to the need for more efficient electrical machines with a high power density. The improvement of electrical machines’ slot filling factors is one of the measures to satisfy these requirements. In recent years, this topic has aroused greater interest in the industrial sector, since the evolution of the winding technological manufacturing processes allows an economically sustainable realization of ordered winding arrangements, rather than random ones. Moreover, the manufacture of electrical machines’ windings must be preceded by an accurate design phase in which it is possible to evaluate the maximu…

ODEF: An interactive tool for optimized design of EMI filters

2016

The impact of EMI filters on volume and weight of power converters is significant. For this reason, filter's size optimization is a strategic step towards the improvement of the power converter's power density. An EMI filter design that follows a conventional procedure does not guarantee the selection of components/configuration leading to the best power density. Therefore, in order to help EMI engineers and scientists in pursuing a fast and effective choice of optimal discrete EMI filter components and configuration, a novel tool is proposed in this paper, namely ODEF (Optimized Design of EMI Filters). ODEF is an interactive software application running in Matlab® environment. It suitably …

A simulation tool for analysis and design of reverse electrodialysis using concentrated brines

2015

Abstract Reverse electrodialysis (SGP-RE or RED) represents a viable technology for the conversion of the salinity gradient power into electric power. A comprehensive model is proposed for the RED process using sea or brackish water and concentrated brine as feed solutions. The goals were (i) reliably describing the physical phenomena involved in the process and (ii) providing information for optimal equipment design. For such purposes, the model has been developed at two different scales of description: a lower scale for the repeating unit of the system (cell pair), and a higher scale for the entire equipment (stack). The model was implemented in a process simulator, validated against orig…

Isolated two-stage passive PFC rectifier for the Radioisotope Stirling Generator

2013

This paper describes an isolated, passive power factor correction rectifier devised for low-voltage, large-inductance, single-phase alternator, like the one used in the Radioisotope Stirling Generator. The power converter splits into two independent stages, the front-end rectifier corrects the power factor by adding a series capacitor in the AC line. Further, the rectifier, thanks to the alternator inductance, behaves as a constant-current source that powers a current-fed, zero voltage and zero current switching push-pull stage. This approach takes advantage of all parasitic elements to increase power density while keeping simple and reliable. Full description and analysis is given as well …

Optimized design of high power density EMI filters for power electronic converters

2016

Nowadays, power density of power converters and related EMI filters is gaining more and more attention. This severely impacts on the design constraints in several application domains. A conventional design of the EMI filter does not guarantee the selection of components/configuration leading to the best power density. For this reason, an optimized design procedure of discrete EMI filters in terms of power density is proposed in this paper. It is based on a previously developed rule-based design procedure, introducing here additional features to obtain a more effective optimization of EMI filter's power density. The proposed approach has been validated in terms of EMI filter's performance an…

Obtaining the electrical model of a power transformer by means of finite element software

2005

Abstract. The behaviour of transformers and inductors working at high-frequencies and high power density can dramatically differ from the ideal or low-frequency operation. Their performance is very dependent on the magnetic material, operating frequency and physical construction. In this paper, finite element analysis (FEA) is used to obtain an accurate characterization of the electromagnetic behaviour of these magnetic components.

Multicolor Up-Conversion Luminescence in Rare-Earth Doped NaLaF4

2011

In this work we tried to achieve multicolor up-conversion luminescence in low phonon energy material NaLaF4 doped with different Er3+ Tm3+ and Yb3+ concentrations. Up-conversion luminescence was measured and main luminescence bands from Er3+ and Tm3+ in red, green and blue spectral regions were observed. The relative intensities of the luminescence bands could be changed by changing the doping levels of rare-earth ions. Changes in the up-conversion luminescence color could be achieved by applying different infrared pump power density. The color coordinates of the multicolor up-conversion luminescence depending on doping level as well as on the pump power density were presented in CIE (x, y)…

Polymerization and Damage of C60 Single Crystals under Low Fluency Laser Irradiation

2001

Photo-induced hardening, substructure formation and damage of C 60 single crystals under the 632.8 nm He-Ne laser irradiation in air at a power density of 1.47 mW/mm 2 was investigated by microhardness and AFM methods. Photo-induced formation of the dislocation substructure and crystallographically oriented crack patterns on the (111) face due to lattice contraction on polymerization were observed. Two phototransformed states: soft (400-450 MPa) and hard (650-1000 MPa) are found to appear under laser-irradiation. Hard fullerite is created in the subsurface layer < 1 μm at the saturation stage of phototransformation. It softens to 400-450 MPa at 340 K and reverts to non-polymerized state at …

Evaluation of the influence of light-curing units on the degree of conversion in depth of a bulk-fill resin.

2020

Background It is known that bulk-fill have been widely studied and used by dentists in the clinic. However, the use of light-curing units that do not have the ability to adequately light-cure these materials at the appropriate depth can affect their clinical performance. The aim of this study was evaluating the influence of 5 different light curing units (LCUs) on the degree of conversion (DC) of a bulk-fill resin at depths of 0 to 4 mm and determined the effect of using 20s exposure and 40s. Material and methods Cylinders of composite were made in a stainless steel matrix (n=10). The specimens were exposed from the top surface using 5 LCUs: Valo® Cordless (VA); Radii Plus (RA); Emitter.D (…
