Continuous hydrothermal synthesis of nanometric BaZrO3 in supercritical water

2007

Abstract Nanocrystalline barium zirconate (BaZrO 3 ) was synthesized using a hydrothermal synthesis process working in supercritical conditions and in a continuous way. By this method, we succeeded in the continuous and rapid production of nanopowders. As a preliminary work three barium precursors have been investigated: barium hydroxide (Ba(OH) 2 ), barium acetate (Ba(CH 3 COO) 2 ) and barium nitrate (Ba(NO 3 ) 2 ). Two of them (Ba(CH 3 COO) 2 and Ba(NO 3 ) 2 ) led to the pure perovskite phase. Then an experimental design has been conducted in order to determine the influence of the experimental parameters on the crystallinity and the grain size of the final product.

Immobilization and controlled release of prostaglandin E2 from poly-L-lactide-co-glycolide microspheres.

2009

Prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) is an arachidonic acid metabolite involved in physiological homeostasis and numerous pathophysiological conditions. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that prostaglandins have a stimulating effect not only on angiogenesis in situ and in vitro but also on chondrocyte proliferation in vitro. Thus, PGE(2) represents an interesting signaling molecule for various tissue engineering strategies. However, under physiological conditions, PGE(2) has a half-life time of only 10 min, which limits its use in biomedical applications. In the present study, we investigated if the incorporation of PGE(2) into biodegradable poly-L-lactide-co-glycolide microspheres results in a …

Advancements in Sustainable PVDF Copolymer Membrane Preparation Using Rhodiasolv® PolarClean As an Alternative Eco-Friendly Solvent

2021

In this work, Rhodiasolv® PolarClean was employed as a more sustainable solvent for the preparation of poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) flat sheet membranes via phase inversion technique by coupling vapour induced phase separation (VIPS) and non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) processes. Preliminary calculations based on Hansen solubility parameters well predicted the solubilization of the polymer in the selected solvent. The effect of exposure time on humidity and the influence of polyethylene glycol (PEG), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and sulfonated polyether sulfone (S-PES) on membrane properties and performance, were evaluated. Three different coagulation …

Nanosensors and other techniques for detecting nanoparticles in the environment

2014

Abstract: Detecting nanomaterials in the environment is a demanding task, not only because of the extremely small size of the particles and their potential sequestration and agglomeration, but also because of their unique physical and chemical characteristics. The aim of this review is to recommend a way forward on tackling the challenge of engineered nanomaterial detection in the environment. An overview will be presented of the available analytical techniques used for the detection and characterization of nanoparticles in environmental matrices including particle-size analysis, particle-fraction concentration counts, surface-area analysis, morphology, and particle chemical composition ana…

Determination of90Sr in environmental samples with resonance ionization spectroscopy in collinear geometry

1994

A new, fast technique for trace analysis of the radioactive isotopes89Sr and90Sr in environmental samples has been developed. Conventional mass separation is combined with resonance ionization spectroscopy in collinear geometry, which provides high selectivity and sensitivity. In addition, a chemical separation procedure for sample preparation has been developed. The described technique was used to determine the90Sr content in ≈ 870 m3 air samples collected near Munich during and shortly after the Chernobyl reactor accident in April 1986. The content of90Sr was measured to be 1.4 mBq per m3, corresponding to 1.6 × 109 atoms of90Sr per sample. This value is in good agreement with the results…

Viscoelastic behavior of epoxy prepolymer/organophilic montmorillonite dispersions

2008

Dispersions of a bisphenol A-based epoxy resin with an organophilic montmorillonite (Nanofil 919) were studied by X-ray diffraction and oscillatory shear rheometry. X-ray studies reveal that the clay is intercalated by the epoxy and forms stable dispersions. The viscoelastic behavior of the nanodispersions was measured as a function of the Nanofil concentration and temperature. An increase in both G′ and G″ moduli was detected as the concentration increases. Furthermore, a transition from a liquid-like behavior, at low temperatures, to a solid-like behavior, at higher temperatures, was observed for all the samples. This transition is accounted for the formation of a percolated structure of …

Study and comparison of interaction parameters and phase behavior of epoxy/polystyrene and epoxies copolymer polystyrene-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) …

2008

Thermodynamic studies in terms of phase separation behavior and interaction parameters, in mixtures of epoxy resins (thermoset materials) with thermoplastic additives, consisting of polystyrene (PS) or polystyrene-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) P(S-MMA) (with small proportion of MMA), have been carried out. It can be confirmed that the solubility of P(S-MMA) is an improvement on that of PS, with the prepolymer epoxy resins. Moreover, the interaction parameters are positive at temperatures in which phase separation is observed, but negative at temperatures in which the phase separation window disappears, in the corresponding phase diagram. An asymmetric electrospun membrane for the controlled release of ciprofloxacin and FGF-2: Evaluation of antimicrobial and chemoattractant properties.

2021

Here, an asymmetric double-layer membrane has been designed and fabricated by electrospinning as a tool for a potential wound healing application. A hydrophobic layer has been produced by using a polyurethane-polycaprolactone (PU-PCL) copolymer and loaded with the antibacterial ciprofloxacin whereas an ion responsive hydrophilic layer has been produced by using an octyl derivative of gellan gum (GG-C8) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and loaded with the growth factor FGF-2. This study investigated how the properties of this asymmetric membrane loaded with actives, were influenced by the ionotropic crosslinking of the hydrophilic layer. In particular, the treatment in DPBS and the crosslinking i…

Preparation of Catalysts and Photocatalysts Used for Similar Processes

2019

Abstract This chapter reports the main techniques used to synthesize powders and films of heterogeneous catalysts and photocatalysts, often used for similar processes. Traditional preparation processes of bulky (photo)catalysts including precipitation, sol–gel technique, hydrothermal or solvothermal method, solid-state reactions, and flame syntheses were briefly described. The sonochemical method and microwave irradiation technique were also considered. The syntheses of supported catalysts by different techniques, including deposition–precipitation, impregnation, and wet coating technologies were also described. Moreover, a survey is reported of methods to deposit thin films of catalysts on…
