Ischemic pre-, post-, and remote conditionings trigger endogenous cardioprotection that renders the heart resistant to ischemic-reperfusion injury (IRI). Brain preconditioning (PC) refers to a state of transient tolerance against a lethal insult that can be evoked by a prior mild event. It is thought that PC may induce different pathways responsible for neuroprotection, which may involve the attenuation of cell damage pathways, including the apoptotic cell death. Ranking and comparing key factors causing time-overruns in on-site construction

For years, the construction industry has looked for ways to avoid time-overruns in construction. Despite previous research mapping the factors affecting time performance, site-managers have difficulties in reducing the time-overrun. In order to create a clearer guidance on how to control time-performance, this study investigates the resource related factors because they are within the site-manager’s control. We consider an iteration method for solving an elliptic type boundary value problem $\mathcal{A} u=f$, where a positive definite operator $\mathcal{A}$ is generated by a quasi--periodic structure with rapidly changing coefficients (typical period is characterized by a small parameter $\epsilon$) . The method is based on using a simpler operator $\mathcal{A}_0$ (inversion of $\mathcal{A}_0$ is much simpler than inversion of $\mathcal{A}$), which can be viewed as a preconditioner for $\mathcal{A}$. Turn-taking is a preverbal skill whose mastering constitutes an important precondition for many social interactions and joint actions. However, the cognitive mechanisms supporting turn-taking abilities are still poorly understood. Here, we propose a computational analysis of turn-taking in terms of two general mechanisms supporting joint actions: action prediction (e.g., recognizing the interlocutor's message and predicting the end of turn) and signaling (e.g., modifying one's own speech to make it more predictable and discriminable). A second-order sparse factorization method for Poisson's equation with mixed boundary conditions

Abstract We propose an algorithm for solving Poisson's equation on general two-dimensional regions with an arbitrary distribution of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. The algebraic system, generated by the five-point star discretization of the Laplacian, is solved iteratively by repeated direct sparse inversion of an approximating system whose coefficient matrix — the preconditioner — is second-order both in the interior and on the boundary.
