Immunocompromised patients are at high risk of developing serious disseminated infections by opportunistic fungi (Aspergillus, Candida, and Fusarium spp), which frequently present as cutaneous lesions, sometimes as a first sign. Prolonged and deep neutropenia, immunodepressive treatments (systemic steroids and chemotherapy) and severe T-cell immunodeficiency are the most important risk factors. Abstract Over the past years, evidence has accumulated that stem cells are present in the adult brain, and generate neurons and/or glia from two active germinal zones: the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricles and the subgranular zone (SGZ) of the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. This study shows that acute intermittent nicotine treatment significantly enhances neuronal precursor cell proliferation in the SVZ of adult rat brain, but not in the SGZ of the hippocampus, and pre-treatment with mecamylamine, a nonselective nAChR antagonist, blocks the enhanced precursor proliferation by nicotine. Analysis of human dysplastic haematopoiesis in long-term bone marrow culture

In this paper we have analysed the behaviour of myelodysplastic marrow in a long-term bone marrow liquid culture system (LTBMC) from eleven patients with myelodysplastic syndromes with regard to cellularity, day-7 and day-14 CFU-GM growth, cluster formation, adherent cells and CFU-F formation. An altered CFU-GM pattern was found in 64% of cases at diagnosis, while normal growth was seen in the remaining cases, all of which were affected by refractory anaemia. The levels of CFU-GM, as well as cellularity, were reduced in myelodysplastic marrows compared to normal controls over the whole duration of LTBMCs. Proportion cured is a potentially more informative cancer outcome measurement than 5-year survival. We present population-based estimates of cure for young patients diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in Europe from 1982 to 2002. Thirty-five European cancer registries provided data. Survival was estimated by age, period of diagnosis and European region, and used as input for parametric cure models, which assume cured patients have the same mortality as the general population. For acute lymphoblastic leukemia diagnosed in 1–14 year olds in 2000–2002, over 77% were estimated cured. Maintenance chemotherapy with oral 6-mercaptopurine and methotrexate remains a cornerstone of modern therapy for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The dosage and intensity of therapy are based on surrogate markers such as peripheral blood leukocyte and neutrophil counts. Dosage based leukocyte count predictions could provide support for dosage decisions clinicians face trying to find and maintain an appropriate dosage for the individual patient.
