Populist demand, economic development and regional identity across nine European countries: exploring regional patterns of variance

2019

Today, populism has gradually become one of the most talked about, most studied phenomena, both within and beyond academia. Most studies of populism focus on its conceptualisation, operationalisation, measurement or its outcomes. However, adding to the growing empirical analysis of populism, we propose to study populism as a regional-level phenomenon and explain regional patterns of variation in the populist demand. To do so, we develop a series of theoretical arguments from, which we subsequently test empirically. Specifically, we argue that higher levels of regional populism demand are associated with (i) economic hardship, (ii) strong institutional autonomy, (iii) strong territorial iden…

Linking functional and relational service quality to customer satisfaction and loyalty: differences between men and women.

2010

This study assessed differences between men and women in the association of perceptions of service quality with customer evaluations. Functional (efficiency with which the service is delivered) and relational (customers' emotional benefits, beyond the core performance, related to the social interaction of customers with employees) dimensions of service quality were measured as well as customer satisfaction and loyalty. The sample of 277 customers (191 men, 86 women), surveyed in 29 Mexican hotels, had a mean age of 38.1 yr. ( SD = 9.7) for men and 34.5 yr. ( SD = 11.0) for women. To be eligible for survey, customers had to have spent at least one night in the hotel in question. Analysis in…

Relations between enabling skills and reading comprehension: a follow-up study of Latvian students from first to second grade.

2004

Sprugevica, I. & Hoien, T. (2004). Relations between enabling skills and reading comprehension: A follow-up study of Latvian students from first to second grade. Scandinavian Journal of Psychology, 45, 115–122. In order to examine the relationships among various phonological skills and reading comprehension, Latvian children were followed from grade 1 to grade 2 and were tested with a battery of phonological, word reading, and reading comprehension tasks. A principal component analysis of the phonological tasks revealed three salient factors: a phonemic awareness factor, a rapid naming factor, and a short-term memory factor. In order to analyze the relationship between various phonological …

The Three Steps of Clustering in the Post-Genomic Era: A Synopsis

2011

Clustering is one of the most well known activities in scientific investigation and the object of research in many disciplines, ranging from Statistics to Computer Science. Following Handl et al., it can be summarized as a three step process: (a) choice of a distance function; (b) choice of a clustering algorithm; (c) choice of a validation method. Although such a purist approach to clustering is hardly seen in many areas of science, genomic data require that level of attention, if inferences made from cluster analysis have to be of some relevance to biomedical research. Unfortunately, the high dimensionality of the data and their noisy nature makes cluster analysis of genomic data particul…

The importance of coaches' autonomy support in the leisure experience and well-being of young footballers

2018

Drawing on the self-determination framework, the study examined the effect of coaches' autonomy support on the leisure experience of young male football players. Specifically, a model was tested analyzing the long-term predictive power of the players' perceptions of the coaches' autonomy support at the beginning of the season on the subjective vitality of young football players at the end of the season, through needs satisfaction and intrinsic motivation (IM). Moreover, we tested whether the effects of coaches' autonomy support on the aforementioned variables (needs satisfaction, IM, and subjective vitality) at the end of the season remained at the beginning of the following season. Because…

Clinical utility of novel biomarkers for cardiovascular disease risk stratification

2012

Over the past few decades, a number of coronary artery disease (CAD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors have been identified. The predictive power of "conventional" risk factors have been validated by observational, prospective and intervention studies. Nevertheless, all attempts to exactly predict the individual risk for CAD have failed, biased by a large number of incorrectly risk-classified subjects. To improve cardiovascular (CV) risk prediction, a large number of genetic and/or non-genetic biomarkers have been discovered and tested against the "classical" risk factors for their power to predict CV risk. Only few of them had a significant improvement over the predictive model…

2014

Title: New evidence on the Statistical Anxiety Scale (SAS). Abstract: As anxiety is negatively related to academic performance, and it is broadly known the existence of both anxiety towards statistics and nega- tive statistics results, statistical anxiety may play a role of mediating negative outcomes in this subject. In this context, the Statistical Anxiety Scale (Vigil- Colet, Lorenzo-Seva, & Condon, 2008) aims to be a useful tool in the comparison of the predictive power of specific and general measures of statistics performance. In order to achieve this goal, the scale is based on three dimensions of anxiety, referred to three specific issues: regarding the exam, when asking for help or…
