Vers l'Amérique : l'implantation médiévale scandinave de la côte sud-ouest du Groenland
2008
During the Viking Age (ca AD 800-1100) Scandinavian explorers settled the islands of the western North Atlantic, making the northernmost agricultural area of the medieval period. Expansion to south-west coast of Greenland at the end of the tenth century brought Norse settlers closer to the limits of their European-style agricultural systems. In response to the harsh low arctic climate, the Greenland Norse have adapted their farming strategies and changed their subsistence pattern, giving a more important place to hunting and fishing. This evolution had probably been accelerated by climatic changes of the Little Ice Age. A good knowledge of the Greenland Norse economy by means of historical …

Showing the Invisible: The Economic Cycle of Stone Tools
2023
This contribution takes place in a broader theme, that of “the invisible economy of recyclable materials”. It aims to illustrate the phenomena of recovery of materials from lithic tools and their consequences. The classification of tools by material, although classic, is not relevant from a technical point of view. The material of a tool, in particular its mechanical properties, is to be taken into consideration in its technical analysis, but it cannot constitute a determining criterion in a classification system. Function should come first, as most functional categories use multiple materials. The most striking example, if one can say so, is that of the striking supports, where one finds, …
Raw material procurement and selection in Southeast Iberia’s early metallurgy
2020
The role of metallurgy in the Copper Age communities of the Iberian Southeast is a recurrent question of archaeological research in western Europe. Based on lead isotope and trace element analyses of archaeometallurgical remains, this paper addresses the territorial organisation of metallurgical production during the Copper Age (3100-2200 cal BC) in the Vera Basin (Almería, Spain), the region with the earliest metallurgical evidence in western Europe. This paper comprises the study of materials from the three main settlements with metallurgical activity in the area (Las Pilas, Santa Bárbara and Almizaraque), as well as some metal objects from these and other sites (La Encantada I, Loma…
