Introduction.

2007

The aim of this introduction to the third part of the specialist theme is to clarify the roles and the themes studied by each associate concerning the metal artefacts. It is divided into two parts:— the history of the study of metal artefacts and the presentation of a new method : metal paleo-manufacturing ;— research guidelines for this new speciality.

2005

After having been neglected for some time, mountain environments have now become an important research area for the study of anthropogenic impact on the environment and the interactions of societies with their environments. The recent development of several interdisciplinary programs in the Alps and in the Pyrenees reveals the interest and the scientific questions associated with these domains. In the Pyrenees, the work undertaken in the Basque Country illustrates the utility of the development of multidisciplinary research on a large scale, which is both diachronic and has a high resolution chronology. Combining environmental and archaeological data, allows us to present an image of popula…

2007

Modern excavations of settlement sites from the end of the First Iron Age and the beginning of the second, together with a re-examination of those undertaken in the past, permit us to better approach some material that has traditionally been neglected as a result of its unpromising aspect: notably some of the iron material. This article will attempt to show the diversity of this material, and some new methods permitting its quantification. The aim is to deepen our understanding of the role and status of this metal in Hallstatt society by a consideration of the material from occupation sites as opposed to funerary monuments.

2018

Identifying the organic materials present, establishing their origin and degree of preservation, understanding their manufacturing process and their use, all of which require interdisciplinary studies involving closely specialists in materials and human sciences. In this very specific context, mass spectrometry has become a key tool to improve knowledge of past civilizations but also to better preserve and restore the discrete remains of archaeomaterials. The identification of diagnostic molecular markers of natural substances is now a recognized strategy for characterizing amorphous organic materials (fats, beeswaxes, vegetable substances such as resins and tars). New advances have also ma…

2007

This article aims to show the potential of a new method of studying assemblages of metallic artefacts, based on the counting of the minimum number of individuals represented. After describing the method, it is applied to the artefacts from the sanctuary at La Villeneuve-au-Chatelot (Aube).

Social features, Spatial features, Time features: An urban archaeological data model

2007

http://proceedings.caaconference.org/files/2007/64_Rodier_Saligny_CAA2007.pdf; International audience; The use of GIS to study the spatial evolution of pre-industrial cities over the "longue durée" requires rigorous formalisation of heterogeneous data from different sources into robust entities. An initial model using the HBDS (Hypergraph Based Data Structure) method enabled us to distinguish social and spatial features. In this paper, we develop a specific model for the temporal dimension. The definition of urban objects using social, spatial and temporal features enhances the study of urban dynamics and of change over the "longue durée".

2012

In both episcopal cities studied here, Auxerre and Autun, in Burgundy, the sites chosen for the establishment of monasteries can be partly determined by their functions, more or less restrictive. The most frequent in the cities are communities of monks settled in the seventh-eighth centuries to serve a funerary basilica or a tomb. This function involves an extra muros situation whatever the age of the foundation of the basilica. Inside the cities, truly monasteries, that is to say, communities of ascetics, are few; these are located outside the walls, but, although isolated from the city by the rampart, these remain in contact with it by symbolic functions. Unlike that is attested in Autun …

A monumental schola discovered on the Boulevard Frédéric-Latouche in Augustodunum/Autun (Saône-et-Loire)

2013

In 2011, an archaeological evaluation was carried out in the centre of the Roman city of Augustodunum (Autun) on a plot of over 1 ha. This operation afforded the opportunity to explore parts of two insulae along the main street, the so-called cardo maximus, an area that has benefited from recent advances in knowledge. The first insula hosts a high-status domus strongly resembling those of "Balbius Iassus" and the "Étui d’Or", excavated in the vicinity in the 1970s; the second, addressed in this paper, contains the remains of a vast monumental complex covering approximately 900 m2. Most probably built at the beginning of the 2nd c. on the ruins of earlier houses, it was thoroughly restructur…
