Rotavirus gastroenteritis: epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic aspects and economic implications

Results 114 cases were diagnosed with rotavirus gastroenteritis in 2011 and 122 cases in 2012, frequently in the colder months, sex ratio M/F 1.42/1 in 2011, 1.18/1 in 2012 and in the age group 1-3 (58.90% of cases). The clinical severity was assessed by Vesikari score: 91 cases admitted in 2011 (79.82%) and 112 cases admitted in 2012 (91.80%) presenting a medium/severe score. 15 cases presented neurological symptoms and also 15 cases had renal failure. Among the electrolyte disorders the most commonly found was hyponatremia ( 150mEq/L). The hospitalization costs of rotavirus gastroenteritis cases ranged from 58.60€ to 5345 RON (1243.02€).

Results The total number of isolated strains was 413, 231 in 2012 and 182 in 2013. In the intensive care units 151 nosocomial infections were identified; 88 strains in the Surgical Department, 27 strains in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, 24 strains in the Department of Neurosurgery and 23 in the Orthopedic Department. 19 strains were identified in the Neurology Department and also in the Internal Medicine Department, 17 strains were identified in the Urology Department, 14 in the Aesthetic Surgery Department, 8 in the Nephrology Department, 8 in the Hematology Department and 5 in the Gastroenterology Department. 3 strains were isolated in each of the following departments: Dia…

Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute, self-limited febrile illness that mainly affecting small- to medium-sized vessels and occurs in early childhood. The etiology is currently unknown, however it likely results from an immunologic response triggered by microbial agents, with documented genetic susceptibility. Intravenous administration of immunoglobulin (IVIG) is the gold standard therapy for coronary arteritis in the acute phase of KD; some patients do not respond to IVIG and coronary aneurysms continue to develop in 5%. The most serious complications are coronary vasculitis and aneurysms. 15% of these patients do not respond to IVIG (Refractory KD:RMK) and have a higher risk of aneurysms.

Palatal perforations secondary to inhaled cocaine abuse: presentation of five cases

The estimated incidence of complications associated with cocaine abuse is 4.8%. Palatal perforation is a very infrequent condition within the range of complications associated with cocaine abuse. No epidemiological cha- racteristics relating to patient age or gender have been established, and the diagnosis of the disorder requires a detailed clinical history, including antecedents of cocaine abuse. The clinical and radiological studies show palatal bone erosion and perforation of the soft or hard palate. Octaplex in routine clinical use for prophylaxis and therapy of bleeding in patients with prothrombin complex factor deficiency

Octaplex is a new prothrombin complex concentrate that is indicated for treatment or perioperative prophylaxis of bleeding in patients with deficiency of the prothrombin complex coagulation factors, such as deficiency caused by treatment with vitamin K antagonists or by liver failure, when rapid correction of bleeding is required. The study was conducted to demonstrate both prevention of bleeding and achievement of haemostasis in acute bleeding and to obtain further information about the safety of administration of Octaplex.

About 100 cases of AHEI have been published in medical literature worldwide. Although initially considered a variant of Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP), it is now considered a separate entity: in fact it shows infrequently visceral involvement and IgA skin depositions. LightCycler SeptiFast in early diagnosis of sepsis: our experience.

The conventional sepsis diagnosis, using the cultivation technique, needs 24 hours for bacterial identification and 36 hours for fungal. The use of empiric therapy makes the growth of bacteria and fungi slower or may yield negative findings in many cases of septic shock. The molecular technique can contribute to a more rapid and specific diagnosis in septic patients. SeptiFast detects 26 bacterial and fungal species DNAs, using the PCR in real time and giving results after 6 hours.
