Progressive Stochastic Binarization of Deep Networks

2019

A plethora of recent research has focused on improving the memory footprint and inference speed of deep networks by reducing the complexity of (i) numerical representations (for example, by deterministic or stochastic quantization) and (ii) arithmetic operations (for example, by binarization of weights). We propose a stochastic binarization scheme for deep networks that allows for efficient inference on hardware by restricting itself to additions of small integers and fixed shifts. Unlike previous approaches, the underlying randomized approximation is progressive, thus permitting an adaptive control of the accuracy of each operation at run-time. In a low-precision setting, we match the accu…

A quantum vocal theory of sound

2020

Concepts and formalism from acoustics are often used to exemplify quantum mechanics. Conversely, quantum mechanics could be used to achieve a new perspective on acoustics, as shown by Gabor studies. Here, we focus in particular on the study of human voice, considered as a probe to investigate the world of sounds. We present a theoretical framework that is based on observables of vocal production, and on some measurement apparati that can be used both for analysis and synthesis. In analogy to the description of spin states of a particle, the quantum-mechanical formalism is used to describe the relations between the fundamental states associated with phonetic labels such as phonation, turbule…

Time Difference of Arrival Estimation from Frequency-Sliding Generalized Cross-Correlations Using Convolutional Neural Networks

2020

The interest in deep learning methods for solving traditional signal processing tasks has been steadily growing in the last years. Time delay estimation (TDE) in adverse scenarios is a challenging problem, where classical approaches based on generalized cross-correlations (GCCs) have been widely used for decades. Recently, the frequency-sliding GCC (FS-GCC) was proposed as a novel technique for TDE based on a sub-band analysis of the cross-power spectrum phase, providing a structured two-dimensional representation of the time delay information contained across different frequency bands. Inspired by deep-learning-based image denoising solutions, we propose in this paper the use of convolutio…

Quantum Toda Lattice: a Challenge for Representation Theory

2021

Quantum Toda lattice may solved by means of the Representation Theory of semisimple Lie groups, or alternatively by using the technique of the Quantum Inverse Scattering Method. A comparison of the two approaches, which is the purpose of the present review article, sheds a new light on Representation Theory and leads to a number of challenging questions.

Companies’ Selection Methods for Inclusion in Sustainable Indices: A Fuzzy Approach

2017

Sustainability indices handle concepts which are both, of numerical and non-numerical nature. In this context, the use of Fuzzy Logic is highly useful as allows a more faithful representation of reality. Usually these indices follow a three-step process to define sustainable investment universes. First step consists of sustainability assessment. In the second step, assets are rated based on the previously assessed sustainability scores and finally, best assets are selected. This last step relies on the construction of a global score reflecting the performance of the assets in main sustainability dimensions. In this Chapter we are concerned with the third step of the selection process. We re…

Inferences are just folk psychology

2004

To speak of “inferences,” “interpretations,” and so forth is just folk psychology. It creates new homunculi, and it is also implausible from a purely phenomenological perspective. Phenomenal volition must be described in the conceptual framework of an empirically plausible theory of mental representation. It is a non sequitur to conclude from dissociability that the functional properties determining phenomenal volition never make a causal contribution. I have offered an alternative interpretation of some of Dan Wegner’s most relevant data elsewhere (Metzinger 2003, p. 506ff), and will confine myself to three conceptual points here. Wegner’s project could be further strengthened by eliminati…

"She's straight, you delusional cunt!" : a study on bullying and homophobia in online fandoms

2016

Tutkielmaa varten tehty nettikysely suunnattiin “femslash”-faniryhmille. Näiden ryhmien median kulutukseen kuuluvat esimerkiksi tv-ohjelmien naishahmojen väliset (romanttiset) suhteet ja näistä suhteista puhuminen sekä eri materiaalien (kuten kuvien, videoiden ja fanifiktion) luominen ryhmien henkilöiden kesken. Kyselyn perusteella oli tarkoitus saada selville, miten yleistä näiden ryhmien kokem…

GESTURES AS A COMMUNICATION FEATURE IN CHILDREN WITH DEVELOPMENTAL LANGUAGE DISORDER

2019

Gestures as non-verbal communication allow us to express our attitude, emotional state, and it functions unconsciously. The verbal communication appears in the life of a child about 2 years of age and gradually replaces the non-verbal communication. However, children with DLD (Developmental Language Disorder) at the age of 3 and more do not speak or speak using separate sounds and combinations of sounds in their speech and use gestures broadly; it helps them to communicate with others. The aim of the article is to explore what kind of gestures as non-verbal communication are used by children with DLD in order to communicate with peers and adults. Based on the scientific literature of the re…
