The Effect of Long-Term Storage on the Biological and Histological Properties of Cryopreserved Amniotic Membrane
2011
Cryopreserved amniotic membrane (AM) is widely used in ophthalmology because of its anti-angiogenic, anti-inflammatory, and wound healing promoting capabilities. A common method to conserve the tissue is the storage in cryo-medium containing 50% glycerol at -80°C. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of storage time on the sterility as well as the histological and biological properties of cryopreserved AM.Amniotic membrane from different donors was stored in cell culture media containing 50% glycerol for different time periods, on average 4 months (group 1), 15 months (group 2), and 24 months (group 3), at -80°C. Samples of the tissue and cryo-medium were examined for bacteria…
Intraspecific diversity of Lactobacillus curvatus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus sakei, and Leuconostoc mesenteroides associated with vacuum…
2006
The intraspecific diversity of Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Lactobacillus curvatus, Lactobacillus sakei, and Lactobacillus plantarum was analyzed by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) PCR with universal primers M13 and T3. The study included 100 reference strains and 210 isolates recovered from two vacuum-packed Spanish meat products, fiambre de magro adobado and morcilla, previously identified by rDNA-restriction fragment length polymorphism profiles. The RAPD-M13 profiles identified isolates at species level in L. plantarum and L. mesenteroides, while RAPD-T3 provided profiles in L. sakei. The combination of RAPD-M13 and RAPD-T3 fingerprints revealed a total of 17 profiles in L. mese…
Fermentation profiles of Manzanilla-Aloreña cracked green table olives in different chloride salt mixtures.
2010
NaCl plays an important role in table olive processing affecting the flavour and microbiological stability of the final product. However, consumers demand foods low in sodium, which makes necessary to decrease levels of this mineral in fruits. In this work, the effects of diverse mixtures of NaCl, CaCl2 and KCl on the fermentation profiles of cracked directly brined Manzanilla-Aloreña olives, were studied by means of response surface methodology based in a simplex lattice mixture design with constrains. All salt combinations led to lactic acid processes. The growth of Enterobacteriaceae populations was always limited and partially inhibited by the presence of CaCl2. Only time to reach half …
Inactivation of conidia of Penicillium chrysogenum, P. digitatum and P. italicum by ethanol solutions and vapours
2008
A fractional factorial design, 2(5-1) experiments, was used for assessing the influence of 5 factors: water activity, aw [0.7, 0.9], temperature, T ( degrees C) [10, 30], mode of application, A [liquid, vapour], ethanol concentration, E (% w/w) [5, 10] and time, t (d) [1, 4] on the inactivation of spores of Penicillium chrysogenum, P. digitatum and P. italicum. Survival was determined by germination at optimal conditions within 3d. The experimental response was log (N 0/Nt), where N 0 and Nt (spore ml(-1)) the concentrations of viable spores at t=0 and t respectively. By a decreasing order of sensitivity to ethanol, moulds were ranked as followed: P. digitatum, P. italicum and P. chrysogenu…
Modeling the effect of ethanol vapor on the germination time of Penicillium chrysogenum.
2005
The influence of ethanol vapor on germination of Penicillium chrysogenum was determined on yeast nitrogen base plus glucose agar medium at 25 degrees C. Ethanol vapors were generated by 0 to 6% (wt/wt) ethanol solutions at the bottom of hermetically closed petri dishes. The logistic equation was used to describe the data as the percentage of germination versus time and to estimate the germination time. The effect of ethanol concentration on germination time was described by a new reparameterized equation, resulting in an estimated limiting ethanol concentration of 4.3%. Up to 3% ethanol, all spores germinated, and the germination time increased with increasing ethanol concentration. At 3.5 …
Application of non-invasive technologies in dry-cured ham: An overview
2019
Background: Dry-cured ham is one of the most valued food products by Mediterranean consumers. In this sense, the appropriate development of its different production stages is essential to ensure the quality requirements. For this reason, non-invasive technologies have gained popularity and have been reported as useful not only to ensure the food safety of different products, but also to monitor fundamental stages in the production process, such as the salting stage, to analyze the content of different compounds without sample losses, and to correct possible defects in the final product. Scope and approach: This work has been focused on summarizing the studies that describe and have successf…
Nouvelles stratégies de stabilisation des bactéries extrêmement sensibles à l’oxygène : cas du probiotique Faecalibacterium prausnitzii.
2016
Intestinal bacteria are of growing interest in the areas of health and wellness [1, 3]. The intestinal ecosystem is characterized by its complex composi-tion and its very low oxygen content. Therefore, nu-merous bacterial species isolated from this environ-ment are extremely sensitive to oxygen. This feature is responsible for the difficulty of implementation of these microorganisms for probiotic large-scale appli-cations, particularly during processing and storage. In this presentation, we present the main steps that have been overcome to conserve and design a stabilization strategy for the bacteria Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, recognized for their anti-inflammatory activities intestinal …
"Lights and Shades" of Fertility Preservation in Transgender Men Patients: A Clinical and Pathological Review
2023
Fertility preservation (FP) is becoming a critical issue in transgender men who desire biological offspring in the future. The prevalence of transgender individuals in the United States is increasing, and as a result, the demand for gender-affirming surgeries (GAS) and associated FP techniques is rising. Despite the growing demand, there is currently no personalized approach to FP for transgender men, and the available techniques have limitations that require further investigation. In the present review we carefully examine the existing literature on this topic to highlight the shortcomings of current methods and areas where additional research is needed to advance the field. Hormonal thera…
Liver Preservation by Aortic Perfusion Alone Compared With Preservation by Aortic Perfusion and Additional Arterial Ex Situ Back-Table Perfusion With…
2017
Background. Arterial ex situ back-table perfusion (BP) reportedly reduces ischemic-type biliary lesion after liver transplantation. We aimed to verify these findings in a prospective investigation. Methods. Our prospective, randomized, controlled, multicenter study involved livers retrieved from patients in 2 German regions, and compared the outcomes of standard aortic perfusion to those of aortic perfusion combined with arterial ex situ BP. The primary endpoint was the incidence of ischemic-type biliary lesions over a follow-up of 2 years after liver transplantation, whereas secondary endpoints included 2-year graft survival, initial graft damage as reflected by transaminase levels, and fu…
Laparoscopic lymph node dissection should be performed before fertility preserving treatment of patients with cervical cancer
2012
Objective: The aim of this study is to assess our results of treatment of women with stage I cervical cancer > 2 cm in diameter seeking fertility preservation. Treatment consisted of Laparoscopic Pelvic and Paraaortic Lymphadenectomy (LPPLND), and when no nodal metastasis was detected, neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) followed by radical vaginal trachelectomy (RVT). Patients with positive lymph nodes underwent primary chemoradiation. Methods: A cohort of women younger than 40 years of age with stage I disease > 2 cm who underwent LPPLND and either NACT and RVT or chemoradiation. Oncological outcome was evaluated prospectively. Results: Eighteen women were eligible for this study. Twelve (67%…
