Sturmian Graphs and a conjecture of Moser

2004

In this paper we define Sturmian graphs and we prove that all of them have a “counting” property. We show deep connections between this counting property and two conjectures, by Moser and by Zaremba, on the continued fraction expansion of real numbers. These graphs turn out to be the underlying graphs of CDAWGs of central Sturmian words. We show also that, analogously to the case of Sturmian words, these graphs converge to infinite ones.

IL RISORGIMENTO: UN COMPITO CULTURALE ED EDUCATIVO

2010

A Study on the Use of Combustion Phase Indicators for MBT Spark Timing on a Bi-Fuel Engine

2007

The performance of a spark ignition engine strongly depends on the phase of the combustion process with respect to piston motion, and hence on the spark advance; this fundamental parameter is actually controlled in open-loop by means of maps drawn up on the test bench and stored in the Electronic Control Unit (ECU). Bi-fuel engines (e.g. running either on gasoline or on natural gas) require a double mapping process in order to obtain a spark timing map for each of the fuels. This map based open-loop control however does not assure to run the engine always with the best spark timing, which can be influenced by many factors, like ambient condition of pressure, temperature and humidity, fuel p…

In silico characterization of the neural alpha tubulin gene promoter of the sea urchin embryo Paracentrotus lividus by phylogenetic footprinting

2011

During Paracentrotus lividus sea urchin embryo development one alpha and one beta tubulin genes are expressed specifically in the neural cells and they are early end output of the gene regulatory network that specifies the neural commitment. In this paper we have used a comparative genomics approach to identify con- served regulatory elements in the P. lividus neural alpha tubulin gene. To this purpose, we have first isolated a genomic clone containing the entire gene plus 4.5 Kb of 5 0 upstream sequences. Then, we have shown by gene transfer experiments that its non-coding region drives the spatio- temporal gene expression corresponding substantially to that of the endogenous gene. In addi…

Development and validation of a scale to measure caregiver skills in eating disorders

2014

Objective:- The aim of this study was to develop and validate a new questionnaire designed to measure caregiver skills that, in line with the interpersonal component of the cognitive interpersonal maintenance model (Schmidt and Treasure, J Br J Clin Psychol, 45, 343–366, 2006), may be helpful in the support of people with anorexia nervosa (AN). A further aim is to assess whether this scale is sensitive to change following skills-based caregiver interventions. Method:- The Caregiver Skills (CASK) scale was developed by a group of clinicians and caregivers. Preliminary versions of the scale devised for both caregivers and parents were given at baseline and at follow-up after two studies of ca…

Compressive sensing for direct time of flight estimation in ultrasound-based NDT

2017

This paper presents an approach for estimation of ultrasonic time-of-flight (TOF) within a Non Destructive Testing (NDT) and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) context. The presented method leverages recent advances in the field of Compressive Sensing (CS), which makes use of sparsity in a transform domain of a signal in order to reduce the number of samples required to store it. CS achieves this through a two key ideas: random matrix projections, and l1-penalised linear regression. In this case, sparsity arises from the observation that in a pulse-echo ultrasound test, the number of echoes is relatively small compared to the number of measurement points in a waveform. This sparsity is evid…

A Sparsity-Aware Approach for NBI Estimation and Mitigation in Large Cognitive Radio Networks

2016

Underlay cognitive networks should follow strict interference thresholds to operate in parallel with primary networks. This constraint limits their transmission power and eventually the coverage area. Therefore, in this paper, we first design a new approach for asynchronous narrow-band interference (NBI) estimation and mitigation in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing cognitive radio networks that does not require prior knowledge of the NBI characteristics. Our proposed approach allows the primary user to exploit the sparsity of the secondary users' interference signal to recover it and cancel it based on sparse signal recovery theory. We also propose two subcarrier selection schemes…
