Tuning the Direct and Indirect Excitonic Transitions of h-BN by Hydrostatic Pressure

2021

The pressure dependence of the direct and indirect bandgap transitions of hexagonal boron nitride is investigated using optical reflectance under hydrostatic pressure in an anvil cell with sapphire windows up to 2.5 GPa. Features in the reflectance spectra associated with the absorption at the direct and indirect bandgap transitions are found to downshift with increasing pressure, with pressure coefficients of −26 ± 2 and −36 ± 2 meV GPa–1, respectively. The GW calculations yield a faster decrease of the direct bandgap with pressure compared to the indirect bandgap. Including the strong excitonic effects through the Bethe–Salpeter equation, the direct excitonic transition is found to have a…

Pressure effects on the electronic and optical properties ofAWO4wolframites (A =Cd, Mg, Mn, and Zn): The distinctive behavior of multiferroic MnWO4

2012

The electronic band-structure and band-gap dependence on the $d$ character of ${A}^{2+}$ cation in $A$WO${}_{4}$ wolframite-type oxides is investigated for different compounds ($A$ $=$ Mg, Zn, Cd, and Mn) by means of optical-absorption spectroscopy and first-principles density-functional calculations. High pressure is used to tune their properties up to 10 GPa by changing the bonding distances establishing electronic to structural correlations. The effect of unfilled $d$ levels is found to produce changes in the nature of the band gap as well as its pressure dependence without structural changes. Thus, whereas Mg, Zn, and Cd, with empty or filled $d$ electron shells, give rise to direct and…

High-pressure Raman investigation of high index facets bounded alpha-Fe2O3 pseudocubic crystals

2021

[EN] High index facet bounded alpha-Fe2O3 pseudocubic crystals has gained the attention of the scientific community due to its promising electrochemical sensing response towards aqueous ammonia. The structural stability of alpha-Fe2O3 pseudocubic crystals is investigated through high-pressure Raman spectroscopy up to 22.2 GPa, and those results are compared with our ab initio theoretical calculations. The symmetry of the experimental Raman-active modes has been assigned by comparison with theoretical data. In addition to the Raman-active modes, two additional Raman features are also detected, whose intensity increases with compression. The origin of these two additional peaks addressed in t…

Nonlinear frequency conversion in a birefringent microstructured fiber tuned by externally applied hydrostatic pressure.

2013

We studied vector frequency conversion in externally tuned microstructured fibers for applications as a novel, nonlinear fiber-optic sensor. We investigated both experimentally and numerically a possibility of shifting vector and scalar modulation instability gain bands by pressure-induced changes in the linear properties of a microstructured fiber. Our results show that polarization-dependent vector nonlinear processes sensitive to variation of fiber group velocity difference (group birefringence) exhibit a clear advantage for pressure-sensing applications compared with scalar nonlinear processes only sensitive to group velocity dispersion changes. Analytical predictions and numerical simu…

Laser-induced plasma spectroscopy to as low as 130 nm when a gas-purged spectrograph and ICCD detection are used.

2003

An experimental setup is described for measuring laser-induced plasma emission spectra in the near vacuum UV with a Czerny-Turner spectrograph and intensified charge-coupled device under atmospheric pressure. With a simple gas-purge technique, emission lines down to 130 nm could be recorded. The strongest emission lines of bromine, chlorine, and iodine in the near vacuum UV are easily detected.

Numerical model for the shear rheology of two-dimensional wet foams with deformable bubbles

2014

Shearing of two-dimensional wet foam is simulated using an introduced numerical model, and results are compared to those of experiments. This model features realistically deformable bubbles, which distinguishes it from previously used models for wet foam. The internal bubble dynamics and their contact interactions are also separated in the model, making it possible to investigate the effects of the related microscale properties of the model on the macroscale phenomena. Validity of model assumptions was proved here by agreement between the simulated and measured Herschel-Bulkley rheology, and shear-induced relaxation times. This model also suggests a relationship between the shear stress and…

Nanostructured Lipid Carriers-Containing Anticancer Compounds: Preparation, Characterization, and Cytotoxicity Studies

2007

This article describes the development of nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) as colloidal carriers for two antitumor compounds that possess a remarkable antineoplastic activity. But their limited stability and low solubility in water could give a very low parenteral bioavailability. Results revealed an enhancement of the cytotoxicity effect of drug-loaded NLC on human prostate cancer (PC-3) and human hepatocellular carcinoma (HuH-6, HuH-7) cell lines with respect to that of both free drugs. Results of characterization studies strongly support the potential application of these drugs-loaded NLC as prolonged delivery systems for lipophilic drugs by several administration routes, in particula…

Perylenetetracarboxylic anhydride as a precursor of fluorescent carbon nanoonion rings

2015

[EN] Thermal annealing at 400 degrees C of perylenetetracarboxylic anhydride in low molecular mass PEG gives rise to the formation of well defined nanoobjects of 2.5 nm height and size distribution from 10 to 65 nm (average 40 nm) after purification of the raw mixture with silicagel chromatography. TEM reveals that the flat nanoobjects are constituted of concentric graphenic rings (0.34 nm interlayer distance). The morphology of the nanoparticles resembles onion rings of nanometric dimensions (nanoonion rings C-NOR). C-NOR particles have an excitation dependent emission with lambda(em) from 430 to 570 nm and a maximum emission quantum yield of 0.49. C-NOR particles can be internalized into …

Effect of water-jet flossing on surface roughness and color stability of dental resin-based composites.

2019

Background The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effects of water-jet flossing on the color stability and surface roughness of five resin-based composites. Material and methods Five commercially available composite resins were studied. Nine disc-shaped specimens (6x2mm) were fabricated from each composite. The specimens were randomly allocated into three groups and three different treatments were performed on each group: storage in water (control group), water-jet flossing using 50 Psi water pressure, and water-jet flossing using 100 Psi water pressure. The water-jet flossing was performed in a standardized manner using a Waterpik® Aquarius® water flosser. Color and roug…

The Experimental Validation of a New Thermodynamic Method for TDC Determination

2007

In-cylinder pressure analysis is becoming more and more important both for research and development purpose and for control and diagnosis of internal combustion engines; directly measured by means of a combustion chamber pressure transducers or evaluated by analysing instantaneous engine speed [1,2,3,4], incylinder pressure allows the evaluation of indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP), combustion heat release, combustion phase, friction pressure, etc...It is well known to internal combustion engine researchers that for a right evaluation of these quantities the exact determination of Top Dead Centre (TDC) is of vital importance: a 1° error on TDC determination can lead to evaluation err…
