Investigations on Load Capacity and stability of deformation of rubber cylindrical shells under internal pressure

1994

The paper presents a wide analysis of conditions under which a loss of deformation stability can be observed as well as local bulges form in axially-symmetric (rotational) shells of any length. Analytical relations of the theory of shells were used for the analysis. If the maximum pressure in the shell was exceeded, the deformation process was investigated too. In such a case, strains begin to develop more intensely in the central part of a long cylindrical shell and, owing to that, one or more superimposed bulges (blisters) form. Symmetry of the shell deformation in relation to the centre of its length can be disturbed. A set of algebraic equations was derived for determination of critical…

First successful ionization of Lr (Z = 103) by a surface-ionization technique.

2013

We have developed a surface ionization ion-source as part of the JAEA-ISOL (Isotope Separator On-Line) setup, which is coupled to a He/CdI2 gas-jet transport system to determine the first ionization potential of the heaviest actinide lawrencium (Lr, Z = 103). The new ion-source is an improved version of the previous source that provided good ionization efficiencies for lanthanides. An additional filament was newly installed to give better control over its operation. We report, here, on the development of the new gas-jet coupled surface ion-source and on the first successful ionization and mass separation of 27-s (256)Lr produced in the (249)Cf + (11)B reaction.

Electron spin resonance as a tool to monitor the influence of novel processing technologies on food properties

2020

Abstract Background Nowadays, electron spin resonance (ESR) is widely used as a powerful, non-destructive and very sensitive technique for the detection of free radicals in food systems. It can be applied for the direct identification of highly reactive oxygen species, organic and inorganic paramagnetic species and screening of food for potential toxicity. Its applications cover investigating food oxidative stability and properties of irradiated foods including fruits and vegetables, meats and fishes, spices, cereal grains, and oil seeds. Scope and approach This review aims at providing specialists in food science and industry with the fundamentals of ESR spectroscopy, typical radicals pres…

Raman spectrum of the high pressure phase of polyethylene

1982

The Raman spectrum of the hexagonal high pressure phase of polyethylene was measured at 5.2 kbar and 240 °C, using a hydrostatic high pressure cell. The spectrum is largely identical to that obtained for the melt. This result indicates that the conformational short range order in the hexagonal phase remains melt —like and is not modified by the overall straightening of chains.

High-pressure crystal structure investigation of synthetic Fe2SiO4 spinel.

2011

AbstractThe crystal structure of Fe2SiO4 spinel at room temperature was investigated at seven different pressures by X-ray diffraction, using a diamond anvil cell to examine the influence of Fe substitution on ringwoodite behaviour at high pressure. The results compared with those of a pure Mg endmember show that the substitution of Fe into the spinel structure causes only small changes in the compression rate of coordination polyhedra and the distortion of the octahedron. The data show that the compression rate for the octahedron and tetrahedron in (Mg,Fe)2SiO4 can be considered statistically equal for FeO6 and MgO6, as well as for SiO4 in both the endmembers. This shows why almost identic…

Hyperpolarized helium-3 gas magnetic resonance imaging of the lung.

2003

3He magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is capable of producing new and regional information on normal and abnormal lung ventilation. The basis of 3He MRI involves "optical pumping" to hyperpolarize the 3He nuclei by photon angular momentum transfer. The hyperpolarized gas is administered via inhalation. 3He is an inert, nontoxic noble gas and absorbed in less than 0.1%. Imaging consists of a four-step protocol. 1) Gas density 3He MRI with high spatial resolution displays the distribution of a 3He bolus in a 10-second breath-hold. An almost homogeneous distribution is regarded as normal. Patients with lung diseases show multiple ventilation defects. 3He MRI has been shown to be more sensitive …

Maximum forces acting on the abdominal wall: Experimental validation of a theoretical modeling in a human cadaver study

2011

Incisional hernias following median laparotomy have a high incidence and recurrence rate after repair, so that a better understanding of the linea alba biomechanics is desirable. The mechanical stress exerted on the linea alba in living humans is primarily generated by the musculature. In this human cadaver study, intraabdominal pressure was simulated by insertion of a balloon that was increasingly filled to maximal pressures of 200 mbar. The related forces acting transversely on the linea alba at maximum pressure were found to be between 41.6 and 52.2 N/cm (mean = 45.9 N/cm), which is in agreement with a recent modeling of the related forces.

Electrochemical Conversion of CO2 to HCOOH at Tin Cathode: Development of a Theoretical Model and Comparison with Experimental Results

2018

The electrochemical reduction of pressurized carbon dioxide at tin cathode is considered a very promising process for the production of formic acid. Here, the process was studied in an undivided cell with the aim of developing a simple theoretical model. First, a large series of polarization and electrolyses was performed in order to evaluate the kinetic of the process. According to the literature, experimental results can be described by a simple reaction mechanism, which involves the following key stages: (i) mass transfer of CO2 to the cathode; (i) its adsorption described by a Langmuir equation; (iii) the reduction of adsorbed CO2. A simple model was developed based on the cathodic conv…

A non-hydrostatic pressure distribution solver for the nonlinear shallow water equations over irregular topography

2016

Abstract We extend a recently proposed 2D depth-integrated Finite Volume solver for the nonlinear shallow water equations with non-hydrostatic pressure distribution. The proposed model is aimed at simulating both nonlinear and dispersive shallow water processes. We split the total pressure into its hydrostatic and dynamic components and solve a hydrostatic problem and a non-hydrostatic problem sequentially, in the framework of a fractional time step procedure. The dispersive properties are achieved by incorporating the non-hydrostatic pressure component in the governing equations. The governing equations are the depth-integrated continuity equation and the depth-integrated momentum equation…

On the evaluation of the global heat transfer coefficient in cutting

2007

The use of numerical simulations for investigating machining processes is remarkably increasing because of the simulation cost is lower than the experiments and the possibility to analyze local variables such as pressures, strains, and temperatures is allowable. Process simulation is very hard from a computational point of view, since it frequently requires remeshing phases and very small time steps. As a consequence, the simulated cutting time is usually of the order of few milliseconds and no steady cutting conditions are generally achieved, at least as far as thermal conditions are concerned. Therefore, nowadays numerical prediction of cutting temperatures cannot be considered fully reli…
