Communication: anion-specific response of mesoscopic organization in ionic liquids upon pressurization

2018

One of the outstanding features of ionic liquids is their inherently hierarchical structural organization at mesoscopic spatial scales. Recently experimental and computational studies showed the fading of this feature when pressurising. Here we use simulations to show that this effect is not general: appropriate anion choice leads to an obstinate resistance against pressurization. Published by AIP Publishing.

Hydrothermal alteration can result in pore pressurization and volcano instability

2021

AbstractThe collapse of a volcanic flank can be destructive and deadly. Hydrothermal alteration is common to volcanoes worldwide and is thought to promote volcano instability by decreasing rock strength. However, some laboratory studies have shown that not all alteration reduces rock strength. Our new laboratory data for altered rhyodacites from Chaos Crags (Lassen volcanic center, California, USA) show that pore- and crack-filling mineral precipitation can reduce porosity and permeability and increase strength, Young's modulus, and cohesion. A significant reduction in permeability, by as much as four orders of magnitude, will inhibit fluid circulation and create zones of high pore fluid pr…

Flow hydraulic characteristics determining the occurrence of either smooth or abrupt sewer pressurization

2014

Laboratory experiments showed that pipe pressurization consequent on a drastic reduction in the downstream discharge can occur either by a gradual rising of the free-surface (“smooth” pressurization) or by propagation of a front filling the whole cross-section (“abrupt” pressurization). This study examines the free-surface flow characteristics that determine smooth or abrupt pressurization pattern through a theoretical approach using dimensionless variables. A critical flow rate value, which separates the pressurization patterns, exists for any given pipe diameter. For flow rates higher than this specific value, only abrupt pressurization occurs. For lower flow rates, either smooth or abrup…

SEWER PRESSURIZATION MODELLING BY A RIGID-COLUMN METHOD

2008

Mathematical modelling of pressurization transient by a rigid-column method is studied based on previous laboratory testing. Of course, such a method is not able to simulate the experimental intense pressure oscillations; however, it is considerably simpler than other feasible methods and more easily implementable within drainage network models. Starting from this operative point of view, the paper aims at recognizing “what” and “how much” of the transient can be simulated by a rigid-column method. Actually, better results were obtained than it was expected. The model proves to be successful in simulation of the filling pipe stage as well as the stabilization stage of flow to the final stea…

On the thermo-mechanical behaviour of DEMO water-cooled lithium lead equatorial outboard blanket module

2017

Abstract Within the framework of EUROfusion R&D activities an intense research campaign has been carried out at the University of Palermo, in close cooperation with ENEA Brasimone, in order to investigate the thermo-mechanical performances of the DEMO water-cooled lithium lead breeding blanket (WCLL). In particular, attention has been paid to the most recent geometric configuration of the DEMO WCLL outboard equatorial module, as designed by WCLL project team during 2015, endowed with an attachment system based on the use of radial pins, purposely outlined to connect the module back-plate to its back-supporting structure, that have been properly considered to simulate more realistically the …

Hydrothermal pressure-temperature control on CO2 emissions and seismicity at Campi Flegrei (Italy)

2021

Fluids supplied by stored magma at depth are causal factors of volcanic unrest, as they can cause pressurization/heating of hydrothermal systems. However, evidence for links between hydrothermal pressurization, CO2 emission and volcano seismicity have remained elusive. Here, we use recent (2010−2020) observations at Campi Flegrei caldera (CFc) to show hydrothermal pressure, gas emission and seismicity at CFc share common source areas and well-matching temporal evolutions. We interpret the recent escalation in seismicity and surface gas emissions as caused by pressure-temperature increase at the top of a vertically elongated (0.3–2 km deep) gas front. Using mass (steam) balance consideration…

Ability of software SWMM to simulate sewer smooth pressurization transient

2010

As a consequence of heavy rainfall events or network malfunctioning, filling of sewers (pressurization) and network overflowing may occur. Several models are commonly used to simulate floods in drainage networks and their results are usually thought to be reliable and robust. Actually, mathematical models based on the momentum equation appear to be more suitable in correctly simulating the pressurization moving jump but models based on the energy equation are much more popular because of their greater simplicity in comparison to the former ones. In this paper, on the basis of laboratory pipe tests, the ability of software SWMM (Storm Water Management Model, probably the most popular softwar…

TRACE and RELAP5 Codes for Beyond Design Accident Condition Simulation in the SPES3 Facility

2012

Code validation on qualified experimental data is a fundamental issue in the design and safety analyses of nuclear power plants. The SPES3 facility is being built at the SIET laboratories for an integral type SMR simulation, in the frame of an R&D program on nuclear fission, funded by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development and led by ENEA. The facility, based on the IRIS reactor design, reproduces the primary, secondary and containment systems with 1:100 volume scale, full elevation and prototypical fluid and thermal-hydraulic conditions. It is suitable to test the plant response to design and beyond design accidents in order to verify the effectiveness of the primary and containm…
