Embryo incubation and selection in a time-lapse monitoring system improves pregnancy outcome compared with a standard incubator: a retrospective coho…

2012

Objective To quantify the effect on reproductive outcome of culturing and selecting embryos using a novel time-lapse monitoring system (TMS). Design Retrospective observational cohort study. Setting University-affiliated private center. Patient(s) Donation and autologous intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles from ten IVF clinics using similar procedures, cultured in TMS (n = 1,390) or in a standard incubator (SI; n=5,915). Intervention(s) None. Main Outcome Measure(s) Clinical pregnancy rate confirmed by ultrasound in week 7. Result(s) A logistic regression analysis, which included all significant confounding factors, was used to evaluate the effect of culturing and selecting embry…

The negative predictive value of cervical interleukin-6 for the risk assessment of preterm birth.

2013

To determine the potential clinical use of cervical interleukin-6 (IL-6) as a negative predictor of preterm birth in symptomatic women.Observational prospective study carried out in a tertiary hospital. We studied 100 singleton pregnant women with threatened preterm delivery and intact membranes, between 24 and 34 weeks, recruited during the period 2006-2008. A cervical swab for IL-6 detection was taken and a transvaginal ultrasound scan was performed for measuring the cervical length.Five women delivered within 2 d and six women within 7 d. A high cervical IL-6 concentration was found in these women. The area under the ROC curve for cervical IL-6 was 0.97 for deliveries within 2 d after the…

Prevalence of general binocular dysfunctions in a population of university students.

1997

Although some authors report that the prevalence of general binocular dysfunctions (nonstrabismic) for nonpresbyopes in the clinical population is greater than any condition except refractive error, limited research is available to support this statement. This clinical study determined the presence and clinical implications of these conditions in a population of university students with heavy near visual demands. From a group of second year students who were given a thorough eye examination, 65 students were selected. The criteria for selection were the absence of significant uncorrected refractive error, healthy eyes, and no strabismus or amblyopia.32.3% of the subjects showed general binoc…

Prevalence of cervical human papillomavirus infection and types among women immigrated to Sicily, Italy.

2009

We determined the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) cervical infection and HPV genotypes among 115 women immigrating to Sicily (Italy), with regard to abnormal cytology and socio-behavioral characteristics in a cross-sectional, observational study. Information was collected with the help of cultural mediators/translators. HPV-DNA was assayed by the INNOLiPA HPV assay and a nested PCR/sequencing method. Sixty (52.2%) women came from sub-Saharan Africa and 55 (47.8%) from Eastern Europe. HPV infection was found in 55 (47.8%) women. The most frequent types were the oncogenic types HPV-16 (7.8%), HPV-18 and 51 (6.0% each), HPV-52 (5.2%), 31, 53, and 68 (4.3% each). Twenty-seven (23.5%) w…

Differences in dyslipidemia between American and Italian women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

2008

Abstract BACKGROUND: Dyslipidemia is a common metabolic complication in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The aim of this study was to determine if differences exist in dyslipidemia in women with PCOS from different ethnic and geographical backgrounds. METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated the serum fasting lipid profiles of 106 women with PCOS from the United States and 108 women with PCOS from Italy evaluated at endocrinology clinics. RESULTS: American women had higher mean body mass index than Italian women (36.1+/-8.6 vs 28.1+/-5.8 kg/m2, p<0.01). Low HDL-cholesterol was the most prevalent lipid abnormality in both populations. U.S. women had higher mean levels of serum total chol…

Prevalence of lymph nodes in the parametrium of radical vaginal trachelectomy (RVT) specimen

2011

Objective: In order to evaluate radicality in fertility preserving surgery in women with early invasive cervical cancer we analyzed the parametrium of specimens of patients treated by radical vaginal trachelectomy for the presence of lymph nodes. We tried to identify morphologic factors associated with the presence of parametrial lymph nodes. Methods: We analyzed surgical specimens of 112 patients who underwent radical trachelectomy between June 2004 and April 2009 at the Department of Gynecologic Oncology at Charité Campus Benjamin Franklin and Campus Mitte. All parametrial tissue was step sectioned and a total of 1878H&E stained histological sections were analyzed. Results: In 8 patients …

Metabolic syndrome in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): lower prevalence in Southern Italy than in USA and the influence of criteria for the diagnosi…

2005

Objective: Metabolic syndrome (MBS) is a common disorder and is thought to be extremely prevalent in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In the USA the prevalence of MBS in PCOS has been reported to be as high as 43–46% using Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP-III) criteria. Because of differences in diet, lifestyle and genetic factors, we postulated that the prevalence of MBS might not be as high in Italian women. This study sought to determine the prevalence of MBS in Italian women using both the ATP-III and the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria and to determine whether the prevalence is influenced by the way in which PCOS is diagnosed. Design: Assessment of the prevalence of MBS in 282 …

Major gender difference in association of FTO gene variant among severely obese children with obesity and obesity related phenotypes.

2008

Recent studies have shown that SNPs in the FTO gene predispose to childhood and adult obesity. In this study, we examined the association between variants in FTO and KIAA1005, a gene that maps closely to FTO, and obesity, as well as obesity related traits among 450 well characterised severely obese children and 512 normal weight controls. FTO showed significant association with several obesity related traits while SNPs in KIAA1005 did not. When stratified by gender, the FTO variant rs9939609 showed association with obesity and BMI among girls (P = 0.006 and 0.004, respectively) but not among boys. Gender differences were also found in the associations of the FTO rs9939609 with obesity relat…

Prevalence and metabolic characteristics of adrenal androgen excess in hyperandrogenic women with different phenotypes

2007

Background: Serum DHEAS has been found to be elevated in some women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). We wished to determine whether this prevalence is different in women with androgen excess who have different phenotypes and to correlate these findings with various cardiovascular and metabolic parameters. Methods: Two hundred and thirty-eight young hyperandrogenic women categorized into various diagnostic groups were evaluated for elevations in serum DHEAS, testosterone, glucose, insulin, quantitative insulin-sensitivity check index (QUICKI), cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, triglycerides and C-reactive protein (CRP). Data were stratified based on elevations in DHEAS. Results: Serum DHEAS w…

Risk of hypertension in women with polycystic ovary syndrome: a systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-regression

2019

Abstract Background A limited number of publications have assessed the prevalence of hypertension (HTN) in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients with inconclusive results. Since in general populations the occurrence of hypertension is related to age per se, we investigated the prevalence (P) / relative risk (RR) of HTN in pooled patients with PCOS, vs control population among reproductive age women with PCOS, compared to menopause/aging patients. Methods PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, web of science, and Google scholar were systematically searched for retrieving observational studies published from inception to April 2019 investigating the HTN in patients with PCOS. The primary outcome …
