Indirect evaluation of pit and fissure sealants: a 3D-based method validation

2019

Background The aim of the present study was to compare indirect methods to assess the clinical performance of pit and fissure sealants and validate the use of 3D scanners. Material and Methods Sample consisted of 58 plaster models of upper and lower first permanent molars, sealed with resin sealants, as well as photographs obtained during the 18-month follow-up. Pre-established criteria were applied to categorize the sealant presence/absence and marginal integrity. Two calibrated examiners performed the evaluations, independently, using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM; gold-standard), Photography, 3D (CEREC In Lab) and Stereomicroscope analysis. Results The intra-examiner Spearman correla…

Enamel remineralization and surface roughness after treatment with herbal-containing toothpastes

2021

Background Oral care products containing bioactive agents obtained from extracts of plant drugs were launched. This in vitro study investigated the effects of herbal-containing toothpastes associated or not with fluoride to remineralize the enamel after cariogenic challenge with pH cycling. The chemical and physical factors of toothpastes and the enamel surface roughness after brushing were also analyzed. Material and methods Sixty bovine enamel blocks were obtained and divided into 3 thirds: intact (untreated), demineralized (artificial caries lesion), and treated (caries lesion, pH cycling, and brushing with toothpastes). Toothpastes containing herbal compounds contained no fluoride [Gall…

Evaluation of Embrace WetBond and Helioseal-F sealant retention with and without a Self-etch adhesive: A 12 month follow-up

2021

Background Pit and fissures on the young permanent tooth are ideal in harbouring dental plaque and calculus. Hence it is important to provide a preventive agent to protect against dental caries. Aim: To evaluate the retention of two different pit and fissure sealants with and without a self-etch adhesive in the first permanent molars for a period of one year. Material and Methods 280 molars were included among 70 healthy children. According to randomisation, the groups were divided into Group IA - Embrace without Adhse One F bonding agent and Group IB - Embrace with Adhse One F bonding agent, Group IIA - Helioseal F without Adhse One F bonding agent and Group IIB - Helioseal F with Adhse On…

Dental expenditure and catastrophic dental expenditure in Eastern Saudi Arabia: Pattern and associated factors

2019

Background Dental services have one of the highest expenses among health services. The aims of the study were to assess (1) dental expenditure (DE), (2) catastrophic dental expenditure (CDE), (3) dental services payment and (4) factors associated with DE and CDE. Material and methods A cross sectional study was conducted in 2018 in Saudi Arabia. Using convenience sample, participants were recruited from governmental and private dental clinics/hospitals. A questionnaire assessed (a) personal information, (b) dental background: payment methods, type of clinics visited, perceived oral health status, frequency of pain and (c) payment for dental services received. The number of remaining teeth w…

The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge about it and the pandemic impact on Spanish dental students. Material and Methods: An observational and cross-sectional study with a 17-items questionnaire was conducted. It was divided into three sections, sociodemographic data, self-perception and knowledge about the COVID-19 protective measures and repercussions on dental students. This survey was carried out in May 2020, and the response rate was 46.16%. The statistical analysis was performed by the Pearson chi-square test and Fisher’s exact test. Gingival hyperplasia as an early manifestation of acute myeloid leukemia. A retrospective review

2019

Background We study the prevalence of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) among patients with severe gingival enlargement. Material and Methods We retrospective reviewed the clinical records of patients with severe gingival enlargement, between 2011 and 2018. The Saxer and Mühlemann index were used to measure inflammation and gingival bleeding. The degree of dental mobility was measured by the Nyman and Lindhe technique. Results A correlation analysis was carried out to test whether there were any associations among the different variables. In the sample of 117 patients the mean gingival bleeding index was ≥3 and the degree of dental mobility ≥2.3. 1.7% of patients, with severe gingival hyperplasi…

Root canal morphology and configuration of 123 maxillary second molars by means of micro-CT.

2017

The aim of this study was to investigate the root canal configuration, accessory canals and number of main foramina of 123 maxillary second molars by means of micro-computed tomography. The teeth were scanned and reproduced with 3D software imaging. The root canal configuration and number of main foramina were evaluated by means of a four-digit system. The morphological complexity of human maxillary second molars is depicted by the number of accessory and connecting canals. The most frequently observed root canal configurations in the mesiobuccal root were 2-2-2/2 (19.5%), 2-2-1/1 (14.6%) and 2-1-1/1 (13.0%). A 1-1-1/1 configuration was observed in 93.5% and in 96.7% in the distobuccal and …
