2020

To explore the conceptions of patients with persistent low back pain (LBP) of undergoing physiotherapy delivered in Finnish primary healthcare by physiotherapists who had participated in brief training in Cognitive Functional Therapy (CFT).As part of a feasibility implementation study exploring CFT in management of LBP in the Finnish primary healthcare system, we interviewed nine patients from four geographical areas in Finland after receiving care. We used a phenomenographic approach to explore the variation in their conceptions. The analysis revealed four descriptive categories: "hung out to dry," "stuck," "making sense and taking control," and "holistic approach to care and living," that …

Total Elbow Replacement as Primary Treatment for Complex Fractures of the Distal Osteopenic Humerus

2003

Background: The use of hip and shoulder arthroplasty in elderly patients for grossly displaced intraarticular fractures is becoming more and more accepted. Total elbow replacement (TER) has not been considered an option for the treatment of extensively comminuted fractures of the distal humerus because surgeons feel the outcome is generally not predictable after TER. Evaluation of TER: On the basis of a MEDLINE literature search of this issue and the documented results based on the improvement of implant designs, operative technique and patient selection, TER has a definite role in the treatment of some fractures of the distal humerus.

Treatment of Combined Medial and Lateral Collateral Ligament Insufficiency

2016

The medial and lateral collateral ligament complexes represent primary elbow ligament stabilizers. Injury to these structures may occur because of an elbow dislocation or due to a severe varus or valgus force. Most elbow dislocations are stable once reduced and may be treated conservatively. However, if the elbow remains unstable surgical treatment is recommended. Repair should be anatomical and should restore stability to the elbow in order to permit an early active range of motion. Reconstruction may be required in severe cases and where primary repair is not possible. Depending on the degree of instability, either one or both of the collateral ligament complexes may need to be repaired o…

Effects of coaching on generalist primary music teachers´ classroom practice and their `musical self-concept´

2016

The majority of music lessons in primary schools are covered by generalist primary music teachers, usually with little or no training in teaching it. This practice-based research project is part a PhD program to professionalize generalist music teachers in primary schools to teach music lessons. The aim of this study was to describe changes in the generalist primary music teachers´ didactic classroom practices in teaching music. Moreover, this study aimed to analyze the generalist primary music teachers´ development of their `musical self-concept` (Spychiger, 2010). This longitudinal intervention study is qualitative in character. Participants were 8 generalist primary music teachers and 4 …

Students’ experiences of their agency in whole-class playing

2022

The agency of primary school students has been studied increasingly in recent years; yet, we know relatively little about student agency in music educational settings or how students experience their participation in joint musical action. This study explores sixth-grade students’ experiences of their agency in whole-class playing. Qualitative content analysis of 11 pair interviews identified vulnerability as an essential element of participating in whole-class playing, highlighting the intrinsically emotional nature of the process, the immediacy of the musically shared moment and the safe place of entrainment. This study elucidates the enactment of agency and the resources facilitating and …

B-Cell Receptor Signaling Is Thought to Be a Bridge between Primary Sjogren Syndrome and Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma

2023

Primary Sjogren syndrome (pSS) is the second most common autoimmune disorder worldwide, which, in the worst scenario, progresses to Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL). Despite extensive studies, there is still a lack of knowledge about developing pSS for NHL. This study focused on cells’ signaling in pSS progression to the NHL type of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Using bulk RNA and single cell analysis, we found five novel pathologic-independent clusters in DLBCL based on cells’ signaling. B-cell receptor (BCR) signaling was identified as the only enriched signal in DLBCL and pSS peripheral naive B-cells or salivary gland-infiltrated cells. The evaluation of the genes in association with …

Brain Modulation by Electric Currents in Fibromyalgia: A Structured Review on Non-invasive Approach With Transcranial Electrical Stimulation

2018

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a complex disorder where widespread musculoskeletal pain is associated with many heterogenous symptoms ranging from affective disturbances to cognitive dysfunction and central fatigue. FMS is currently underdiagnosed and often very poorly responsive to pharmacological treatment. Pathophysiology of the disease remains still obscure even if in the last years fine structural and functional cerebral abnormalities have been identified, principally by neurophysiological and imaging studies delineating disfunctions in pain perception, processing and control systems. On such basis, recently, neurostimulation of brain areas involved in mechanism of pain processing and …

CALIBRATION OF LÉVY PROCESSES USING OPTIMAL CONTROL OF KOLMOGOROV EQUATIONS WITH PERIODIC BOUNDARY CONDITIONS

2018

We present an optimal control approach to the problem of model calibration for L\'evy processes based on a non parametric estimation procedure. The calibration problem is of considerable interest in mathematical finance and beyond. Calibration of L\'evy processes is particularly challenging as the jump distribution is given by an arbitrary L\'evy measure, which form a infinite dimensional space. In this work, we follow an approach which is related to the maximum likelihood theory of sieves. The sampling of the L\'evy process is modelled as independent observations of the stochastic process at some terminal time $T$. We use a generic spline discretization of the L\'evy jump measure and selec…

Recovering a variable exponent

2021

We consider an inverse problem of recovering the non-linearity in the one dimensional variable exponent $p(x)$-Laplace equation from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. The variable exponent can be recovered up to the natural obstruction of rearrangements. The main technique is using the properties of a moment problem after reducing the inverse problem to determining a function from its $L^p$-norms.
