Paraconsistent logics, conventionalism and ontology

Paraconsistent logics may be viewed as one of the last elements in a series of rapid developments in science in the 19th and early 20th c., triggered by the appearance of non-Euclidean geometries. The philosophy of conventionalism, which gave a metatheoretical framework to the basic changes involved, may also help in evaluating the truth import of (paraconsistent) logic and in determining its relation to ontology.

Pseudo-haptic Controls for Mid-air Finger-based Menu Interaction

Virtual Reality (VR) is more accessible than ever these days. While topics like performance, motion sickness and presence are well investigated, basic topics as VR User Interfaces (UIs) for menu control are lagging far behind. A major issue is the absence of haptic feedback and naturalness, especially when considering mid-air finger-based interaction in VR, when "grabbable" controllers are not available. Raksts ir balstīts uz 2021. gada decembra mēneša priekšmetu - Latviešu studentu korporācijas Fraternitas Cursica akadēmiskās paukošanās inventāru, kas pastāvīgi glabājās LU Muzeja krājumā vairāk kā 10 gadus. Tiek skaidrots arī, ka akadēmiskā paukošanās ir sporta veids, kas izpaužās ar akadēmiskās paukošanās turnīru organizēšanu studentu korporāciju starpā Latvijā un visā Baltijā.

In this paper we describe the principles of VIG (Visual Interactive Goal Programming), a Multiple Criteria Decision Support System, recently developed by Korhonen. PARETO RACE is a corner-stone of this system, which is designed to support both the modelling and solving of a multiple objective linear programming problem. The interface is based on one main menu, spreadsheets, and interactive use of computer graphics. VIG provides the decision-maker with the possibility to approach his/her decision problem by using an “evolutionary approach”. The usage of phase change materials (PCMs) is a way to store excess energy pro- duced during the hot time of the day and release it during the night thereby reducing the overheating problem. While, in Latvian climate conditions overheating is not a big issue in traditional buildings since it happens only a couple of weeks per year air conditioners must still be installed to maintain thermal comfort. Beyond ideal two-dimensional metals: Edges, vacancies, and polarizabilities

Recent experimental discoveries of graphene-stabilized patches of two-dimensional (2D) metals have motivated also their computational studies. However, so far the studies have been restricted to ideal and infinite 2D metallic monolayers, which is insufficient because in reality the properties of such metallic patches are governed by microstructures pervaded by edges, defects, and several types of perturbations. Here we use density-functional theory to calculate edge and vacancy formation energies of hexagonal and square lattices of 45 elemental 2D metals.
