The Case Law of the ECtHR in 2020 in the Light of the Principle of Systemic Harmonisation
2021
This article provides for an overview of some relevant developments in the case-law of the ECtHR in 2020. Priority will be given to Grand Chamber judgments and decisions and those of the Chambers deemed to be relevant from a substantial and procedural viewpoint. Given that in 2020 the Steering Committee for Human Rights published its report on ‘The Place of the European Convention of Human Rights in the International and European Legal Order’, the case-law will be selected and examined from the viewpoint of the principle of systemic harmonisation. The aim is highlighting positive and negative examples of application of general international law by the ECtHR, of cross-fertilisation between t…
Tax compliance and wealth inequality
2019
In this work, we theoretically approach optimal taxing in a public good provision context in a society where wealth is Pareto distributed. Our main result shows that high levels of wealth inequalit...
"Facta non verba" : an experiment on pledging and giving
2015
International audience; We design an experiment to investigate whether asking people to state how much they will donate to a charity (i.e., to pledge) increases their actual donation. Individuals’ endowment is either certain or a random variable. We study different types of pledges, namely, private, public and irrevocable, which differ in terms of the cost to the individual for not keeping the promise. We show that in absence of endowment uncertainty, private and public pledges are associated with lower donations as compared to donations in the no-pledge case: private pledges slightly reduce donations and public pledges reduce them more significantly. Donations increase with uncertainty (in…
Tuning the collective decay of two entangled emitters by means of a nearby surface
2017
We consider the radiative properties of a system of two identical correlated atoms interacting with the electromagnetic field in its vacuum state in the presence of a generic dielectric environment. We suppose that the two emitters are prepared in a symmetric or antisymmetric superposition of one ground state and one excited state and we evaluate the transition rate to the collective ground state, showing distinctive cooperative radiative features. Using a macroscopic quantum electrodynamics approach to describe the electromagnetic field, we first obtain an analytical expression for the decay rate of the two entangled two-level atoms in terms of the Green's tensor of the generic external en…
Exactly solvable relativistic model with the anomalous interaction
2010
A special class of Dirac-Pauli equations with time-like vector potentials of an external field is investigated. An exactly solvable relativistic model describing the anomalous interaction of a neutral Dirac fermion with a cylindrically symmetric external electromagnetic field is presented. The related external field is a superposition of the electric field generated by a charged infinite filament and the magnetic field generated by a straight line current. In the nonrelativistic approximation the considered model is reduced to the integrable Pron'ko-Stroganov model.
Outdoor Performance of 10 year Old a-Si and Poly-Si Modules in southern Norway conditions
2012
The outdoor performance of 10 years modules has been measured in southern Norway conditions. For this study, Poly-Si and a-Si modules are selected and the measurements are carried out using a portable electronic load. The I–V characteristics and maximum power have been recorded for several modules of each technology. It is found that Poly-Si modules perform very well even after 10 years of span whereas some of a-Si modules have visual degradation which causes significant power losses. The experimentally outdoor monitored values of P mp , V mp , short circuit current (I sc ), Open circuit voltage (V oc ) and efficiency for different modules are compared with manufacturer's values.
Management of Distribution Risks and Digital Transformation of Insurance Distribution—A Regulatory Gap in the IDD
2021
The Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD) aims to regulate insurance distribution in the EU regardless of distribution channels and means. Although new technologies affect insurance distribution, the IDD does not explicitly regulate this digital transformation. Insurers and intermediaries must comply with detailed business conduct rules that aim to counteract distribution risks. However, the IDD exempts ancillary insurance intermediaries from its scope when they meet certain conditions. The article highlights the regulatory framework on insurance, requiring insurers and intermediaries to address distribution risks, and analyses how this exemption affects the management of distribution risk…
2019
The law no. 219 of 2017 intervened, after an almost thirty-year debate, to introduce a discipline, though still incomplete, of the end of life. It is the first legislative intervention expressed in a matter on which, until recently, there were doubts that the State could intervene. The legislation is constructed by general clauses, which incorporate the jurisprudential right, guaranteeing that the person has possibility for autonomous decisions on how to live the terminal phases of a pathological state that approaches to death. However, it cannot be assumed that it is only a recognition of the already living right, since, in art. 1, the definition of the axiological framework of reference c…
Design, assembly and characterization of silicide-based thermoelectric modules
2016
ID: 1143 In: Energy conversion and management, 13-21. Summary: Highlights•Novel silicide-based thermoelectric modules were experimentally investigated.•The modules produced high power of 1.04 W at 405 °C and 3.24 W at 735 °C.•An estimated module efficiency of 5.3% represent the highest reported for silicide systems.AbstractSilicides have attracted considerable attention for use in thermoelectric generators due mainly to low cost, low toxicity and light weight, in contrast to conventional materials such as bismuth and lead telluride. Most reported work has focused on optimizing the materials properties while little has been done on module testing. In this work we have designed and tested mod…
