Characterization of a compact low-cost Stokes lens for astigmatism compensation in optical instruments

2020

Variable power cross-cylinder lenses (or Stokes lenses) have been widely known in the literature for decades. In this paper, we describe how to build a low-cost Stokes lens and discuss its calibration and its application to two significant cases. The construction is in virtue of a phoropter’s Risley prism mount for assembling a couple of equal but opposite sign cylindrical lenses (we have selected ± 1.50 D). Thus, variable astigmatic power is achieved by relative rotation of the lenses in opposite directions, and the resulting astigmatic axis is defined by the global rotation of the device. Calibration measurements are performed using an automatic lensmeter (Topcon CL-300) and an aberromete…

Multinucleon transfer reactions in closed-shell nuclei

2007

Multinucleon transfer reactions in 40Ca+96Zr and 90Zr+208Pb have been measured at energies close to the Coulomb barrier in a high resolution gamma-particle coincidence experiment. The large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA coupled to the CLARA gamma-array has been employed. Trajectory reconstruction has been applied for the complete identification of transfer products. Mass and charge yields, total kinetic energy losses, gamma transitions of the binary reaction partners, and comparison of data with semiclassical calculations are reported. Specific transitions in 95Zr populated in one particle transfer channels are discussed in terms of particle-phonon couplings. The gamma decays fro…

The Barrel DIRC detector of PANDA

2019

The PANDA experiment is one of the four large experiments being built at FAIR in Darmstadt. It will use a cooled antiproton beam on a fixed target within the momentum range of 1.5 to 15 GeV/c to address questions of strong QCD, where the coupling constant $\alpha_s \gtrsim 0.3$. The luminosity of up to $2 \cdot 10^{32} cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ and the momentum resolution of the antiproton beam down to \mbox{$\Delta$p/p = 4$\cdot10^{-5}$} allows for high precision spectroscopy, especially for rare reaction processes. Above the production threshold for open charm mesons the production of kaons plays an important role for identifying the reaction. The DIRC principle allows for a compact particle identif…

Prototyping the PANDA Barrel DIRC

2014

The design of the Barrel DIRC detector for the future PANDA experiment at FAIR contains several important improvements compared to the successful BABAR DIRC, such as focusing and fast timing. To test those improvements as well as other design options a prototype was build and successfully tested in 2012 with particle beams at CERN. The prototype comprises a radiator bar, focusing lens, mirror, and a prism shaped expansion volume made of synthetic fused silica. An array of micro-channel plate photomultiplier tubes measures the location and arrival time of the Cherenkov photons with sub-nanosecond resolution. The development of a fast reconstruction algorithm allowed to tune construction deta…

Simbol-X Mirror Module Thermal Shields: II-Small Angle X-Ray Scattering Measurements

2009

The formation flight configuration of the Simbol-X mission implies that the X-ray mirror module will be open to Space on both ends. In order to reduce the power required to maintain the thermal stability and, therefore, the high angular resolution of the shell optics, a thin foil thermal shield will cover the mirror module. Different options are presently being studied for the foil material of these shields. We report results of an experimental investigation conducted to verify that the scattering of X-rays, by interaction with the thin foil material of the thermal shield, will not significantly affect the performances of the telescope.

In-situ diagnostic of ultrashort probes based on Kerr-index transient Bragg grating

2019

Pump-probe experiments are essential tools to investigate ultrafast dynamics of laser-matter interaction. We are particularly interested in the dynamics of transparent dielectrics under high numerical aperture focusing. Two main challenges arise for the weak probe pulse. First, we need a precise knowledge of the probe delay with respect to the pump pulse. Second, dispersion compensation of the ultrashort probe pulse generally requires a prism compressor, which can generate angular dispersion, and therefore incorrect interpretation of the pumpprobe measurements.

Background Rejection of Charged Particles in the Simbol-X Telescope: Preliminary Study of Protons Scattering

2009

X-ray telescopes equipped with focusing optics in high eccentric orbit, as e.g. Newton-XMM and Chandra, showed a degradation of the detector performance and an important increase of the noise due to soft protons with energy between a few tens of keV and a few MeV, that are focused on the detector through the mirror module. It should be noted that the focusing of the protons by Wolter optics was an unexpected phenomenon. In Simbol-X a magnetic diverter will be implemented to deflect protons, in order to reduce the flux of charged particles impinging upon the focal plane. Obviously the design of the diverter should take into consideration the protons distribution at the exit of the mirror mod…

High-spin states in the neutron-rich A∼100 region

2009

Two experimental setups have been used to study excited states of neutron‐rich nuclei in the A∼100 region. Extended level schemes and lifetime measurements were obtained using deep‐inelastic and fusion‐fission reactions with the CLARA‐PRISMA spectrometer and the Ge‐array GASP respectively. Experimental information from GASP has been used to complement the CLARA‐PRISMA experiment. Time spectra have been used to measure the lifetimes of isomeric states. Preliminary results are presented for 89Rb.

An evaluation of inoceramid single-prism sclerochronology

2020

Abstract Inoceramid prisms are among the most common microfossils that can be found in Late Cretaceous strata. Since these biomineral units were formed by sequential accretion in the outer shell layer of the bivalves, they potentially serve as archives of short-term (circa-annual) paleowater temperature fluctuations. In the present study, we tested to what extent intra-prismatic stable isotope variations of individual inoceramid prisms reflect sub-annual δ13C and the δ18O patterns. We obtained multiple carbonate samples from prisms recovered from the sediment and from a cross-sectioned inoceramid shell fragment and compared data from these samples to data from classical sclerochronological …

Structural overprint of a late Paleozoic accretionary system in north-central Chile (34°-35°S) during post-accretional deformation

2009
