Life Cycle Consumption and the Great Recession

2017

Using Italian Household Budget Survey data for the period 1997-2013, this paper estimates the life cycle profiles of consumption and cross-sectional variance in the Great Recession. The study examines age profiles for total and durable expenditure, and four subcomponents of non-durable expenditure. We document significant heterogeneity in the way the recession affects consumption and the variance within-cohorts. The crisis has entailed a fall in expenditure for the youngest cohorts, and a notable reduction of inequalities for the middle and oldest cohorts with some differences between high and low income elastic expenditure. We also found that socio-demographic factors account for a substan…

Polychrome wood sculpture depicting The Madonna del Soccorso or della Mazza from the Archdiocese of Palermo: an integrated analytical approach for th…

2018

In this study the Madonna del Soccorsoo della Mazza wooden sculpture has been analysed by an interdisciplinary and integrated approach. The polychrome sculpture, dating back to the 18thcentury, comes from the church of the Madonna del Soccorso or della Mazza (1604) situated in Via Maqueda, in Palermo and it was placed on the main recess of the altar. All steps of the conservation project, from the preliminary study to the choice of materials and the restoration procedures have been accompanied and supported by diagnostic and scientific analysis. In order to evaluate the state of conservation of the sculpture and the technique employed to construct the support, computer tomography study was …

Innovation for climate change adaptation and technical efficiency: an empirical analysis in the European agricultural sector

2020

This paper analyses the effect of innovation on firms' technical efficiency. Using climate-related patent data to proxy for innovation activity in different technological fields, the paper employs a stochastic frontier approach to estimate the impact of innovative efforts on agricultural firms' technical efficiency taking account of both unobservable heterogeneity and double heteroscedasticity in the inefficiency and idiosyncratic terms. Our findings confirm that innovation has a positive impact on firms' productivity (technical efficiency). While agricultural firms located in Germany and Sweden are more efficient compared to those in southern countries, all the European countries considere…

Inguinal Hernia: Defect Obliteration with the 3D Dynamic Regenerative Scaffold Proflor™.

2021

Prosthetic inguinal hernia repair presents significant challenges. Some of these, such as mesh fixation and quality of the biologic response, are still debated among surgeons. For example, there is no strong consensus regarding a specific condition that characterizes the surgical procedure during herniorrhaphy. This issue concerns management of the hernia defect, which in conventional hernia repair with flat meshes remains patent. However, a critical analysis of typical postoperative complications after inguinal hernia repair reveals that some of these adverse events are related to patency of the hernial opening. Postoperative discomfort, pain with specific movements and even hernia recurre…

Toward a European Eco-label brand for residential buildings: Holistic or by-components approaches?

2011

The Eco-label scheme is becoming ever more important in the environmental certification of products and services, especially in light of the recent ambitious aim of containing greenhouse emissions and improving the efficiency of utilizing energy sources. A recently-introduced hypothesis concerns the European Eco-label scheme relating to buildings, in the awareness that the construction industry is of primary importance to the whole economic and social life of states. This scheme should adopt an integrated approach to environmental problems and include construction, day-to-day management, and the possible disposal of building materials, throughout the life cycle of the building. In addition,…

Comparison among different dynamic shakedown approaches

2017

The paper concerns the search for the limit load multiplier of structures subjected to seismic actions under shakedown conditions. The search problem is treated referring to two fundamental different approaches: The unrestricted dynamic shakedown approach and a new stochastic one recently proposed. The comparison between the above cited approaches is effected with the aim of evaluate the goodness of the obtainable results and the related computational effort. The structure sensitivity with respect to shakedown is evaluated through the analysis of the shakedown limit load multiplier cumulative distribution function. This function is determined by means of the stochastic approach, adopting th…

Am I riskier if I rescue my banks? The unintended effects of bailouts

2021

We examine the relationship between bank bailouts and sovereign risk in 35 countries and 19 bailouts during 2005–2015. Bailouts negatively affect sovereign ratings, with rating agencies consistently perceiving higher risk when the country’s banking system has been rescued (risk-increasing effect). Financial soundness and banking market structure shape the impact of bailouts on sovereign risk. In particular, proactiveness in undertaking public bailouts for banking systems that are largely distressed -risky and low profitable- and highly concentrated seems to lead to lower increases in sovereign risk. However, the strength of the connection between the public sector and the banking system nei…

Determining your own grade – Student perceptions on self-assessment in a large mathematics course

2018

International audience; In our poster, we report on students' perceptions on self-assessment in large undergraduate course context taught with the DISA model (Digital Self-Assessment) in which the final exam is replaced by self-assessment. The students found that practising self-assessment skills was valuable and encouraged them to study for themselves. At the same time, self-assessment was considered unfamiliar and therefore difficult. We argue that the DISA model encouraged students to take more responsibility on their own learning.

THE VALIDATION OF A SELF-ASSESSMENT TOOL FOR THE TEACHER'S PRACTICES THAT EMBRACES THE NEURO-EDUCATIONAL APPROACH

2021

This contribution intends to present a study and research path that, starting from the theoretical framework of neuro-education, has led to the identification of five indicators (transversal area, socio-emotional-affective area, cognitive area, linguistic-communicative area, praxico-motor) on the basis of which a neuro-evaluation tool for teachers was built and validated: Self-assessment questionnaire of neuro-didactic and educational practices for teachers. Neuroscientific research is offering numerous points of reflection-action on the functioning of the brain and on how to modify the teaching and the educational proposal to improve the performance and growth of the person. However, the p…
